By Dr. Steve G. Jones, creator of Total Money Magnetism

Did you know that one of the biggest reasons why most people don’t get the wealth and the life they want is that they don’t actually KNOW what they want?

It’s true.

Although you may think you want to be wealthy and successful, the truth is that majority of people actually spend more time thinking about what they DON’T want rather than what they DO want.

For example, have you ever had any of these thoughts?

  • “I don’t want to be poor”
  • “I hate being in debt”
  • “I don’t want to be paying rent forever”
  • “I’m tired of struggling”
  • “I don’t want my kids to go without”
  • “I don’t want to be a failure”

Yes, most of us have had these kind of thoughts before…

And the problem is that focusing on what you don’t want actually prevents you from attracting wealth in your life.

Instead of manifesting that promotion, that business opportunity, or that unexpected windfall, you end up manifesting more debt, bills, and hardships!

So, how are self-made millionaires different?

The difference is that even before they became rich, they DREAMED of being wealthy and successful.

They literally had a “rich brain”.

Rather than dwelling on what they were lacking in their lives, they focused on the steps they were going to take each day that would lead them to the successful future they desired.

So, today I want to help YOU to develop the mindset of a millionaire, by teaching you these three simple steps to programming your mind for wealth.

These steps have helped me to get to where I am today, and I hope they help you to get on the path of achieving great success!

Step One: Set a target

Then first step is to set a specific goal for your financial future.

Think about what you really want, and try asking yourself the following questions…

  • How much money do I want to have in the bank?
  • What kind of job and salary do I want to have?
  • Am I happy working for others, or do I want to become my OWN boss?
  • What kind of assets do I want to own?
  • What kind of LIFESTYLE do I want to live?

It may be that you want to earn an income of over $100k per year, it may be to own a house mortgage-free, it may be to start up a successful business, or it may be to simply make an extra couple of hundred bucks a week so that you can start living the lifestyle you want.

Any target you want to achieve is great – the important thing is that it is what YOU want for your future, not what anyone ELSE wants.

P.S. Don’t worry about HOW you are going to achieve this goal right now (that’s the job of your subconscious!) – simply come up with a target that makes you feel really, really excited.

Step Two: Determine your REASONS for setting that target

It’s important to know the reasons WHY you want to be wealthy, because these reasons can determine whether or not you will achieve your goal.

Is it because you hate the job you’re in now, or because you’re terrified of the thought of struggling with debt and bills forever?

Or, is it because you have a dream to turn your passion into your day job, or you dream of becoming financially free so that you can live your dream lifestyle?

Wanting something out of passion and determination is a million times more powerful than wanting something out of fear, so it’s important that your reasons are positive and motivating.

For me, the reason I wanted to be wealthy was for financial freedom.

I’ve never had really expensive taste, and my luxury assets stretch as far as a nice condo and a Mercedes AMG… which of course are both very nice to have.

But what I love most about being wealthy is the freedom.

I love being able to spend majority of my time helping people, and travelling the world. And I love knowing that I would never have to work again even if I never made another penny in my life.

So, what is it about wealth that YOU want? What are the good things that would come from having an abundance of money? What would financial freedom enable you to do?

Here are some ideas:

  • To be able to provide a great lifestyle for my family
  • To be able to travel and go on vacations when I choose
  • To be able to buy my dream house or dream car
  • To be able to do the kind of work I love, and work the hours I choose
  • To feel successful, valued and proud of what I have achieved

Give yourself some time to think and then write down 2-3 reasons why you want to be wealthy.

Step Three: Align your brain with your target

The last step is to align your brain with your target.

The clearer and more specific you are about what you want to achieve, the harder your brain is going to work to make it happen.

So right now, I want you to try to actually visualize yourself achieving the goals you have set yourself, and picture how you will be FEELING in that moment.

For example…

  • Seeing that million-dollar balance when you log in to your online banking
  • Picturing yourself opening that dream business…
  • Welcoming your friends and family to your beautiful new home (that you own mortgage-free)…
  • Picturing yourself picking up that dream car from the lot…
  • Telling your kids about the amazing holiday you’re about to take them on…

Whatever your dream is, the more you practice visualizing in your mind, the more likely it is to become your reality.

Your subconscious mind sets out to attract into your life the things you think about MOST. So, make sure that the things you think about are things that you want.

Keep going over these three steps, and as these thoughts, images and feelings of wealth are absorbed through repetition by your subconscious, you’ll soon find your life beginning to change in amazing ways you’d never dreamed possible.

  1. How true these words are. Most of us focus so much on the fears and the negative possibilities in our lives that we miss out on the positives that could happen in the same life. I have set targets before for my life but I realized I did not know why I had those dreams in the first place. The day I discovered why, my whole perspective changed. Now that I know why, I am able to align my thoughts and work hard towards achieving what I want. I am still learning to align my brain in a natural way. Thank you for these valuable insights.

    • Hi Carol,

Dr Steve G. Jones is a specialist in his field, that’s why you found those words true. You know, being defeatist, we find it easier to focus on our fears and the negative shades in our lives. One would think that behaving otherwise was hard work and that make us miss out on the positives that could change our lives for the better.

Setting targets and not knowing why you had those dreams in the first place is like wandering. You’re going somewhee and nowhere at the same time. Yes, you’re right to have discovered why, and do yousee why your whole perspective changed?

As a result, you can now align your thoughts and work towards achieving what you want for yourself.

Learning never stops in one’s life and aligning your brain in a natural way is no different.

Thank you too for your visit and valuable comments.

  2. I think this wealth brain is that mindset that sets those who have already attained a certain level of wealth as compared to others. Its great to think about your why and the reasons why you want to attain your goals. Then yes, setting targets like you said. I think it has to be tangible so that you can take action. If you always think negatively, then you might find everything difficult and eventually quit. If you have the right mindset, you will take action and you will always find a way to achieve your targets. Thanks for sharing this, Akoli.

    • Hello Raquel,

No, the wealth brain is really not that mindset that sets those who have

already attained a certain level of wealth as compared to others. It’s for people who want to change the way they think so that they can make money, or rather, build wealth.

As you so aptly observed, you must think about your why and the reasons why you want to attain your goals. Things may be difficult for you if you have jsut a vague idea of why you’re pursuing something. Yes, you must be able to see (almost be able to touch) wht you envision so that you can take action on it. You get what you think about. Think negatively about money and you can’t get it but believe in it and half of the battle is almost won. This way you don’t quit easily.

I agree with many of the things you said in the conclusion.

Thanks for visiting and for comment.

  3. Thanks for this guide on the 3-steps to activating your wealth brain. It most certainly is something to take action on as I believe attaining success (and wealth) starts with the mindset that you have. There are many people who are thinking exactly the opposite to how they should be thinking.

Setting targets, determining the reasons why you have decided on the targets, and aligning your brain (and the thoughts about the targets) to them makes so much sense. You are forcing your brain to change from a defeatist attitude to a more positive one. This is of course just the start because the action has to follow to achieve the targets you set, but without these initial first steps, it is much harder to achieve much. This has been my experience in any case.

Is it helpful to find some kind of reminder that you can use to keep the new mindset fresh and if so what would you recommend (i.e. a reminder pasted next to your laptop or work area, a recording that you listen to before you sleep, etc.)? I have done these kinds of things in the past with success.

    • Hi Dave,

Serving visitors this guide on the 3-steps to activating your wealth
brain is something which gives me immense joy. Sure, you must implement what the piece says, otherwise it’s not more than just a wish. Attaining success (and wealth) is not something to be taken lightly. It needs work, and this work starts with the mindset you have right now.
You’re right that many people are thinking exactly the opposite to how they
should be thinking. Is it any surprising that so many people are poor.

I agree with your argumetn about the links among setting targets,
      determining the reasons why
you have decided on the targets, and aligning your brain (and the
thoughts about the targets) to them. To set your body from lack of
emotion or slow motion to speed, you maybe first need to stoop, then
spring, pick up speed and then try to attain your maximum. You’re forcing your body to move from inertia to speed just as you’re obliging your brain to do things as you wish. Yes, just like the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step, your wealth creation also needs “baby steps” first. Thanks for sharing your experience.

A sort of a reminder that you can
use to keep the new mindset fresh is definitely recommended. I would
suggest a reminder pasted at places/things you used most such as next
to your laptop or work area, your fridge, bedroom mirror, closet door.
Thanks to the modern phone, you can also record these messages that you
can listen to while you drive, as you relax with your eyes closed,
      before you sleep, etc.)

One does not stop banking on a winning
horse. Since you have successfully done these things in the past, I will
encourage you to continue along that path.

Thanks for this interesting dialogue, and I look forward to having you on my blog again, soon.

  4. Hi Akoli,

Thanks a lot for the Great inspiring article! This has to be motivating, not only for me but also for many others.

The information you shared is really GOLD. I am currently reading the book “Biology Of Belief” by Bruce Lipton and in that he talks about the importance of belief. Also, a few years before I read the book Secrets of The Millionaire Mind by T. Harv Eker. Unfortunately, I didn’t implement what I learned.

After reading your article, I am determined to implement what I learned from your article. The information you shared in step 3 is an eye-opener and I need to start visualizing things.

I have also taken the quiz “Result: You have 60% of the brain of a millionaire”.

    • Hi Paul,

It’s always my pleasure serving my blog visitors pieces they will love. And your compliments tell me that I’mndonejust that. Yes, I wanted to touch as many people as possible with this motivating piece.

You found my information really GOLD? You tickle me!

Your reading list show that you’re somebody looking to be wealthy. I will encourage you to read more of these matter as possible, but especially to put them into practice. Otherwise, you’re only reading for pleasure.

Fortunately my article is going to let you do just that. Get down to implementation. Read some more. Implement more. And slowly you’ll see your wealth changing for the better.

Visualization is important but always add implementation to it.

Wow, the quiz “Result showed you have 60% of the brain of a millionaire”. Work more to go even higher and see yourself wealthy.

Thanks for the visit and I will ask you to come back again.

  5. Hi Akoli,

Really interesting article, I agree a lot of what hold people back is their mindset. Fascinating article on activating your wealth brain, I’d never really perceived it as something you can teach people; but you’re correct, the same as anything else, it can be learnt!

Some great practical steps on how to align your brain with making wealth, it’s something I do fairly naturally but these will help keep my mindset in line with where I want it to be!

    • Hi Nate,

I’m always thrilled when a visitor comes to my site and appreciates an article. Yes, the mind is a very powerful organ. It’s said to be more powerful than the most powerful computer ever built. No wonder, the mindset can hold us back so much.

Fortunately the wealth side of the brain can be activated. Yes, people can definitely be taught to do this.

And as you observed, the piece gives some great practical steps on how to align your brain with

making wealth. You’re lucky to be a person who does this fairly naturally and I’m happy that my piece will be a help to keep your mindset in line with where you want it to be!

By the way, did you take the quiz? It would have taugh you more.

Please, do come back again as I will be posting more about this.

  6. Thank you for this inspiring article. I am that person who has developed the mindset that I want to be rich one day, it takes time but I’m getting there, so here is what I learnt from Cosmas Maduka I’m sure you may know him he is a Nigerian Billionaire self made, he said poverty is when there is no improvement in what you are obtaining, if you are earning 1 000 per month every month that is poverty, learn to grow.

Another guy also said a goal that is not written down is a mere wish. Write it down and work towards it and assess yourself every now and then to see how best you can work towards getting that.

    • Hi Donny,

I’m happy that you liked my article. You have already
developed the mindset that you want to be rich one day? Congrats, Donny. Yes, anything worth getting, and especially money, takes time but , as you said,
      you will eventually get there.

It’s strange I’ve never heard of Cosmas Maduka, although he’s a Nigerian Billionaire self made. You’re making me learn something here, thank you. Maduka is right, when there is no improvement in what you are obtaining, you’re either stagnating or regressing. Yes, if you are
earning 1 000 per month every month that is poverty, because needs rise, prices rise and you’d one day find your 1 000 worthless. Yeah, learn to growis the way to go.

It’s said that a goal written down kind of fixes it in the mind. It’s like sending a wish to your brain that you want to do what you have on that paper. It’s also almost like you have the thing already accomplished. But writing it down isn’t enough. Working towards it is another important part of the wealth creation equation. It’s even more important than writing your goal down because action speaks louder than words. Assessing yourself every now and then is important to see
how best and how far you’re progressing and  if something needs correcting.

I like your very technical knowledge of this matter. Thanks for chiming in.
