4 Surprising Things That Are Holding You Back From Wealth

While certain things advance us towards wealth, others hold us back from it. You will find in this post 4 surprising things that keep us from becoming rich.

By Dr. Steve G. Jones, creator of Total Money Magnetism

Does it sometimes feel like other people in your life just have it easy?

You see them getting great jobs and promotions, earning big money, or not having to work hard for what they get… while you are constantly STRUGGLING?

Do you sometimes think to yourself…

‘Why can’t I have what THEY have? Is there something I should have done differently?’

Well, let me tell you right now it’s not that they’re ‘better than you’.

It’s not that they’re smarter than you, luckier than you, or they deserve it more.

As a hypnotherapist and self-made millionaire, I see clients every day who are struggling with one (or more) of 4 things… which make it almost impossible to get the wealth and the life you want.

Here’s #1…

#1: Fear of failure holds you back from wealth

‘But what if I FAIL?’ ‘What if I’m not GOOD enough?’ ‘What will I LOSE?’

‘What will people think of me?’

We are creatures of habit, and our subconscious minds are great at keeping us in the same routines or behavior patterns.

Why?

Because there is a certain safety about doing the same things we’ve done before.

Basically, it’s a survival mechanism, which causes us to feel nervous, uncomfortable, or fearful when we even think about doing something different.

And this goes double when it comes to big things like making a career change, starting a business, or moving somewhere new.

We fear what will happen if we FAIL, and our minds are great at coming up with all sorts of inventive negative scenarios.

But the important thing to remember is: If you continue to do exactly the same things, you will continue to get exactly the same results.

Creating wealth doesn’t have to be ‘hard’. But it does involve stepping out of your comfort zone.

#2: Fear of success holds you back from wealth

‘But what will happen if I get rich?’ ‘What will happen if I get that promotion?’ ‘What will happen if I buy that bigger house?’

‘Will people treat me differently?’

‘Will I become someone ELSE?’

Yes, fear of success is also a very real thing.

Again, this comes down to our natural resistance to change.

For instance, although you may WANT to land that dream job, there is a tiny part of your mind that is stressing out about what will come with that new job…

…a new office, new responsibilities, new people to report to and higher expectations.

And, underneath it all, you may not feel that you are truly deserving of achieving this kind of success and becoming wealthy, especially if others in your life are struggling.

When in actual fact, you are just as worthy and deserving as anyone else!

#3: You’re suffering from the toxic cash-repelling ‘Scarcity Virus’…

‘I’m just not that lucky’ ‘I don’t have what it takes’ ‘There isn’t enough money to go around’

If you’re frustrated with where things are at in your life and feeling helpless about your finances right now, chances are you are suffering from the toxic, cash-repelling ‘Scarcity Virus’.

Basically, you have some serious inner hang-ups about money and what it means to be rich… and whether you actually have what it takes to BE rich.

In fact, majority of the population suffer from this same problem.

You might think you’d love to be wealthy, land that dream job, or live that luxurious lifestyle, but inside your mind is telling you something different.

Because on some level, you’ve learned that “money is BAD”. Or, that you’re not “good enough” to ever be rich.

Maybe you or your family have struggled with money in the past, and therefore you’ve come to associate wealth with feelings like fear, jealously, or resentment.

And even as an adult, these feelings have remained rooted within you and can be extremely hard to shake.

#4: You’ve been following the wrong footsteps all along

‘But my father told me that getting rich is about hard work and saving’ ‘The more hours I work, the closer I’ll get to success’

The fourth crucial thing I see holding people back from wealth is that they have been listening to advice from the wrong people their whole lives.

Instead of looking for successful mentors who can teach them the real steps to success, they follow the guidance of people who may actually be struggling themselves.

For instance, parents, siblings, or friends who provide well-meaning yet unhelpful comments such as, “You just have to work HARDER”.

As I can personally testify to, building your income really isn’t about working double the number of hours and putting in double the effort.

It’s about tuning your mind into what really WORKS.

  1. Fear of failure has always been the reason I dont make the proper decisions towards making money on most occasions and I thank you that you have addressed that here. I just do everything to avoid ever having to lose because I dont know how to react to not being successful for anything I am doing. This is great to see here and I will surely try my best to work around this fear and hopefully overcome it.

    • Hi Rodarrick,

I share your opinion of fear of failure being the reason why you don’t make the proper decisions towards making money on most occasions. It was Mhairi Farlane who said “Do nothing, and npthing happens. Life is about decisions. You either make them or they’re made for you, but you can’t avoid them.”

I think it’s human that you do everything to avoid ever having to lose. Onceyou refrain from doing something, nobody  can say you’ve failed at it. But you can’t fool yourself. You know that you should have done it and you hold yourself responsible for it. Not knowing how to react to not being successful for anything you are doing is therefore not the solution. This is because failure is not definite. It’s just a step towards success. Each failure gets you nearer to success. I like the fact that you said “I will surely try my best to work around this fear.” Yes, go ahead and do it and surely you’ll overcome it.

Generally, fear is one thing that hinder so many see success story and that needs to be faced and dealt with. • Hi Benson,

Yes, the title of the article was not chosen just like that because these things holding you back from wealth are really surprising things indeed. They are surprising because they are the simplest of things that could do but which our sub-conscious mind refuses.

Yes, fear hinders success stories. One thing which has always surprised me is that if a 5 meter pole is laid on two walls at 20 meters high with a swift river flowing under it, many would be afraid to walk over it. But put this same branch at one meter from the floor and many will gladly jump along it, without fear of falling. We are not afraid to fall in the second case because we know we wouldn’t get hurt or die when we fall. FEAR!

What we need to do is face our fear and deal with it.

In trying to be a successful person with wealth, as you say, fear must be eliminated from our mind as the first step to getting the money.

Thanks for your compliment. I love it!

  3. This is really interesting. I am blessed that I am lucky to have a job but I know that I do better and make more money. Out of all the 4 pointers, I personally have the fear of failure. I think all if us have the same problem when we have to deal with rejections. However, I learn later in life that it is ok to fail but it is not ok for me to give up. Thank you for sharing this food for thoughts.

    • Hi Nuttanee,

I am happy to see you here again and thrilled that you found this piece really interesting.

Yes, having a job in these difficult times is a great blessing. You’re also lucky to do better and make more money.

I just shared with another commenter that the fear of failure is the most common among the 4 pointers that keep people away from getting wealthy. So, you’re right, all of us have the same problem when we have to deal with anything we can’t afford to fail at, like rejections that you mentioned.

Sure, it is ok to fail but as you observed, “it is not ok … to give up.” Let me share an African proverb with you. It says: “Don’t turn where you fell at into a bed”.

Thank you also for coming back here once agin and especially for commenting.

      Please, keep coming back.

  4. Having that feeling that you are not just doing fine in whatever business you try to do is very disheartening and painful, most times discouraging. When we’re afraid of failure, we tend to make more mistakes than usual because the drive isn’t coming naturally, i always love to work with a plain mind, that’s why I always encourage people to be as positive as they can as it goes a long way in determining the success of the business.

I think everything revolves around psychology, working on how we think will help a lot. Thanks for posting this informative and educative article, it is very useful and helpful.

Thank you for coming here once again to read a new post and comment on it.

Yes, when you think you’re failing at something, it’s, as you say, very disheartening and painful, and most times
discouraging. Yes, failure is fed by fear, and when that feeling seizes you making
mistakes is almost second nature. If the drive isn’t coming naturally, it’s also because fear of failure has paralysed the person.

I like your philosophy of always
loving to work with a plain mind. Continue encouraging people to
be as positive as they can because who gives receives.

Talking about psychology and how we think pleases me a lot. The brain is said to be the most powerful machine on earth, in terms of knowledge power. Thegreat Einstein is said not to have used even a quarter of his brain power. We others use only about 1% if I remember clearly. Imagine if one pushes oneself to use above average intelliegence?

I will always look forward to your visit here because your comments are always a real challenge and brings out a dialogue.

    • Hello Wildecoll,

I think this is the first time you’re visiting my blog. Thank you for that and for commenting on this post too.

Yeah, other commenters before you also found that these factors which keep us from getting wealth are really surprising things indeed. They are even more surprising because they are the simplest of things that everybody is expected to be using for their success but which consciously or unconsciously we are failing to face and get real with it.

Somebody also said that this fear is the thing that hinders so many of us from writing their success stories.

Yes, the first step towards wealth is therefore to overcome one’s fear. And with hard work the wealth may flow in.

Amazing to know that a brain can be reshaped to create wealth or even more amazing is you can be given a new ‘brain’ that will enhance the possibility to be rich! The Dr Steve G Jones’ story is very powerful and of course listening to his video makes me feel that anything in life is possible with the right positive attitude and brain.

    • Hi Luigi,

Yes, the title of this piece is supposed to get you to read the piece at all costs since it will mean a lot to people. I didn’t want people to miss this important information at all.

      Yes, a brain can be
reshaped to create wealth. This is when you’re told to think differently, to be creative. Yes, you can be given a
new ‘brain’ just as you can be given a new personality to enhance you! I’m not surprised that you find Dr Steve G
Jones’ story very powerful. He is one of the foremost experts on the question under discussion here. Please don’t underestimate the power of the brain to operate mysteries in your life when it’s canalized in the right direction.

Congrats for taking quiz and for scoring 60%. You just need 40% to have a full millionaire’s brain. But even at 60 and with the right training, you can accomplish wonderful things. So I will encourage you to order the program.

Thank you for coming over to visit and for commenting.
