That’s what we’re going to see using the 10 factors we draw on to write our MLM reviews.

That said, let’s dive in to see the first one.

Year of creation / Number of years of company and other details

4life was founded in 1998 and is headquartered in Sandy, Utah. The company has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau.

There’s also a subsidiary called 4Life Research Japan, LLC. It is a biotechnology company that creates science-based products dependent on the science factor, which enhances and balances the immunities.

The company has a humanitarian branch that works with its employees with a view to promoting continued growth and wellness.

Herbalife on the other hand
was founded in 1980. They are incorporated in the Cayman Islands and have their world headquarters in Los Angeles California.

All Herbalife distributors proclaim that they work for the best company in the MLM niche. They claim the company’s products are the best on the market.

The company has over 2.3 million independent distributors.

Founder(s) and/or Director(s) of the company

4Life was founded by Bianca Lisonbee and David Lisonbee. They also have a subsidiary called 4life Research Japan, LLC.

The company was founded by Mark Hughes.

Mark started Herbalife by selling products out of the trunk of his car and succeeded in building an empire in just a few years.

A protein shake was all that he started with claiming it would change the nutrition habits of the world. He was driven by this theory while watching his mother struggle with weight problems her whole life.

Suspecting there was strength in numbers, Mark began to recruit people to serve as independent distributors to move his products.

Mark put them up on a direct selling multi-level marketing program.

In 2000 and at the tender age of 44, Mark died of an accidental overdose. Since then the company has gone through many changes. And it has even been slowly buying its stock back from the shareholders.

Position among top 100 MLM companies in the world

They are number 51 on the list of the top 100 MLM companies in the world.

Herbalife is at number 3 of the highest-grossing MLM companies in the world.

Products and/or services offered

Among 4Life’s products are health support ones. They are clinically tested and patented.

Boosting your immunities, helping your general wellness and building muscle mass are the claims made by the company of its products.

Transfer Factor Plus and Renuvo, for daily stress and aging, are 4Life’s most popular selling products. Transfer factor Try-Factor, Transfer Factor Classic, Transfer factor RioVida Tri factor, and Fibre System Plus are the others.

Compared to their competitors’, 4Life’s prices are about average. Still they offer very good discounts on your purchases if you sign up as a preferred customer.

On the negative side however, 4Life’s products are found on Amazon and similar websites. Sales should normally be distributor only. But according to reports posted on Google, this seems not to be affecting distributor sales.

Personal care products, weight management, and dietary products and sports nutrition products are what Herbalife develops and sells.

But the lifeblood of the company has been an original protein shake. Even up to this day, it is still responsible for over 30% of Herbalife’s total sales.

Touted as a replacement for meals, the protein shake is soybean-based. Now the company calls it a formula one protein shake!

Herbalife soon added protein bars, aloes, vitamins, teas, and personal care products to its product line. They also offer a line of vegetarian and halal products.

The company uses 5 facilities scattered throughout China and the United States to manufacture its own products. A couple of third-party manufacturing facilities around the world also help in this regard.

What characterizes Herbalife is the fact that they grow and extract all of their ingredients for their products from their own botanical gardens.

In addition, the company invented a diet plan that has been award-winning in several countries. It also boasts an A rating from the Better Business Bureau.

Herbalife has many different clubs including weight loss ones.

Number of countries in which company does business

4Life has expanded to doing business abroad and is now present in over 50 countries.

Herbalife however operates in 95 countries with over 2.3 million independent distributors.

Business model / Compensation plan

4life offers its distributors a popular multi-level marketing model they call the Life Rewards Plan.

The company’s starter kit costs $29.95. It introduces you to their products so that you become familiar with them and their proven sales techniques and aids.

You can easily terminate your membership and receive a complete refund for the kit if you follow the company’s policies.

In our opinion, the best way to build this kind of business is to build your own blog for it. With this, you can draw people in as customers and others as potential new distributors that you can add to create a downline.

Blogging could easily help you bring in a load of free traffic that you could convert into product sales. While doing this, you could all the same be branding yourself in your very own niche!

By adding great content about the products and how useful they are, or by doing online reviews a distributor could bring in customers from all over the world. All this from the comfort of your home, and rock that bank account!

The business model is explained at the company’s website. But it is very confusing as there are many loopholes one has to jump through to actually make any kind of money selling their products. But if you manage to understand it, you will find it actually set up quite nicely.

With 4Life, you can earn money in several ways. These are: retail profits, commissions from sales to preferred customers in your downline, and commissions from sales of distributors in your downline.

The company designs several different levels for their distributors, Associates, and Builders. Idem for Diamonds, Presidential Diamonds, International Diamonds, Gold International Diamonds, and Platinum International Diamonds.

Although the program can get a bit confusing but there are many different ways to make money working with this company. That’s why we see good results reported on distributor earnings. No doubt it works.

We have to confess that with this kind of program, one really needs to be experienced with working a multi-level model. Or, at the very least, one must take some serious time and study how the program works. This way, you do not get caught up in the different levels.

Fortunately one can find many resources available online to learn the ins and outs of the basic multi-level marketing business plans. And once you get the jest of it they all become easy to understand and implement.

Mark Hughes, the founder, set up a compensation plan for his distributors right back in the early 80s. This revolutionized the MLM niche.

Mark emphasized selling products first and before recruiting fellow distributors to build a downline.

How do Herbalife’s distributors make money?

They buy the company’s products wholesale, sell them retail and keep the difference. They also get payments from sales in their downlines. Thirdly they benefit from many other of the company’s incentive programs.

This system put in place by Mark Hughes marked a new twist to MLM. It deleted the pyramid scheme out of the picture as any company that relies directly on recruiting without a quality product will eventually collapse.

This is because such a situation leaves the members at the top financially healthy and their numerous downline broke. Discourage, they leave in droves.

The many reviews posted online about both Herbalife’s products and their business model are mainly encouraging. Many claim the company is the number one pick for working with MLM programs. It is for the simple reason that the potential to make huge profits are 100%. And that is a huge boast!

Annual sales

4Life posts an annual income of $328 million.

Herbalife’s Sales exceed 4.5 billion.

Pros and cons

The pros of working with 4Life are:

  • Great company
  • Outstanding reputation
  • Good training program
  • Popular products
  • Good prices with discounts
  • Preferred customer discounts
  • Commissions on sales
  • Commissions on distributor sales
  • Product discounts for personal use

There is only one con:

  • Confusing business model

  • Products are intended to help people maintain healthier lifestyles
  • The weight-loss plans are fairly simple to follow
  • The shakes, protein bars, snacks and supplements are easy to take with you on the go
  • Careful monitoring of your fat and caloric intake help retrain you on how to eat and live better
  • Starting your own Herbalife business is a relatively easy feat

  • The products sold by representatives can be very expensive.
  • Products with same ingredients may be purchased at significantly
lower prices at health food stores
  • Not enough scientific
evidence to support the claims that taking Herbalife will make you lose
  • A lawsuit seeking class action status and filed on behalf
of 8,700 former and current distributors as of that time & alleged
that the company was merely a pyramid scheme

Bans / Complaints / Legal issues

There is none to report for 4Life.

However Herbalife has been through its fair share of legal issues from the beginning.

They have been sued on several occasions by many different federal agencies for making false claims concerning their products.

One case against some of their products was that they contain high levels of lead. So it was alleged that this was causing liver problems in users. Fortunately the allegation was pretty much discredited in the courts as untrue.

Other lawsuits were also filed by distributors in regards to mismanagement of payments for services. The company has intelligently settled these by dishing out over 200 million to those distributors.

But it’s not finished yet as other suits are still pending. Some of them assert that Herbalife is nothing more than a glorified pyramid scheme. Therefore, the possibility of making a living as a distributor for this company is one in five thousand.

Despite all these setbacks the company thrives. It has, for the most part, survived the legal issues and is still growing stronger and stronger.

Our view of / take on the company

It is without hesitation that we state our admiration of this company. We believe strongly that it is a good fit for people who love selling. The same goes for distributors that are good at communicating with individuals either through group settings or blogging.

The popularity and the quality of 4Life’s products and prices are quite impressive. While their presence on Amazon and other websites is disturbing, yet they seem to sell well for everyone. This obliges us to overlook this issue.

What’s our view then?

4Life gets a thumbs up from us. We recommend it for both the beginner and the experienced multi-level marketing worker. But this, only on condition that they will do their homework on the business model.

Can you make a part-time or a full-time income with this company? We think, yes. However, we recommend blogging as the best way to sell to both preferred customers and to recruit new distributors for your downline.

Our decision to give Herbalife a thumbs up comes from our reading countless reviews from many different sources.

Really, the lawsuits filed against them do their image no good. Fortunately the company’s response has been quick and upfront. And for the most part a large number of the suits have been dismissed.

We have to give it to them that when you run a company as large as Herbalife, you are sure to attract some detractors. But for us there’s nothing that would keep us from exploring this MLM opportunity.

One thing is sure: Herbalife’s diet programs have been rated not only extremely high but also effective. Why then shouldn’t we find it refreshing that so many reviews have been written by people who have had success with one product or the other?

  2. Wow great information as I wasn’t exactly aware that 4Life is thee direct competitor of Herbalife. Excellent idea in comparing the two. I see that Herbalife has been around for a while and that 4Life is no amateur either, so it’s outstanding that they have stood the test of time. As far as MLMs go these two look like a couple of the best ones out there, and to be honest you can’t go wrong with either really. I think if I had to choose I would actually choose 4Life due to the pricing, discounts and commissions.I know some people who are into MLMs and I will definitely pass along your post to them. Great reviews thanks!

    • Hello there,

Yes, 4Life is the direct competitor of Herbalife. It’s because they have stood the test of time that these two look like a couple of the best ones out there. Yet you would choose 4Life for the pricing, discounts and commissions. This is the value of comparison posts. To make you see the better between two or the best among several. Thanks for passing this post along to your friends.

  3. It’s good to note the differences in 4life versus herbalife, so thank you for sharing the details side by side for easy understanding. Both companies seem to have some areas of opportunity with regards to their business structures. I appreciate the info but I’m still not quite sold on either one. I do however like the idea of blogging, and that can be applied to many other ideas as well (not just 4life and herbalife)!
