97 per cent of Online Workers Fail

A red rectangualr sign saying WRONG WAY

Do you know that 97% of online workers fail? Although it is believed that with the Internet everybody can make it? But the statistics are clear. In this post we will see the reasons why most people do not succeed online.

The Most Common Reasons why 97 per cent of Online Workers Fail

Here are the most common reasons why so many people fail online, with suggestions as to why others succeed.

Lack of education (or training)

Ignorance, Know, Education Gap to show why 97 per cent of Online Workers Fail

“There is a direct link between education and income, education and opportunity. You cannot ‘beat this system’.” Citation taken from “How to Open the Door to Your Future” (The Official ICS Guide To Success In Life published by ICS Learning Systems, Inc.

Education is a fact of life. Just like gravity. In that sense certain realities of life relating to education cannot be beaten. Little wonder:

• Online workers who receive training succeed far better than those who don’t
• Online workers who receive more training get more income than those who don’t

After this first reason why 97 per cent of Online Workers Fail, we will go to the second.

Lack of association

Face, Head, Spirit, Thought, Neurons to show why 97 per cent of Online Workers Fail

“If you want to be successful, find someone who has achieved the results you want and copy what they do and you’ll achieve the same results,” Anthony Robbins.

Do you know that people you associate with hold you back or advance you in life? Yes. Their values, ideas and directions influence your own. That’s why online workers who succeed most are those who leverage the ‘principle of success’. This is called “The Power of Positive ASSOCIATION.” How do they do this? They have:

• peers that encourage them to keep to the directions they have chosen for themselves.
• a “support group” made up of co-online workers, mentors, teachers and coaches who share their directions or who have already successfully travelled those directions.

The second reason why 97 per cent of Online Workers Fail over, let us go to the third.

Lack of lifelong learning

Leave, Board, Hand, Learn, Note to show why 97 per cent of Online Workers Fail

“School is never out for the pro,” Cavett Robert.

Many people who try to earn a living online think that once they start, they can continue their journey without learning new things. In contrast, people who succeed online are those who:

• after learning how to do a certain aspect of online business, deepen that knowledge or learn another aspect of it
• continually read and train in all aspects of working online

Having seen the third reason why 97 per cent of Online Workers Fail, we will go to the fourth.

Lack of high self-esteem

Self Doubt, Depression, Confidence

“The man who does not value himself, cannot value anything or anyone,” Ayn Rand.

Have you ever heard of the maxim Know Thyself inscribed on a temple wall at Delphi? It is as applicable today as it was on the day the Greeks etched it there ages ago.

If you do not know yourself, and especially if you ignore how powerful you are, you will ALWAYS doubt your ability to accomplish things. Really knowing yourself and truly seeing who you are leads you to see the power in you.

People who succeed online:

• are imbued with self awareness and realize that power does not come from a particular “Self”
• know that power is not owned by anyone nor exclusive to some
• realize that they are a part of this power and so is everyone else.

We’ve come to the end of the fourth reason why 97% of online workers fail, we will go to the next.

Lack of a plan

Chaos, Regulation, Chaos Theory, Tree to show why 97 per cent of Online Workers Fail

“If you don’t know where you want to go, any road will take you there,” the Cheshire cat in ‘Alice in Wonderland.’

If you were going to build a house you would have a plan, wouldn’t you? Why do you think it should be any different when building your online career? Proper planning is key to establishing a new direction in life that will help you make money online. People who succeed online are those who plan to know, among other things:

• If there are buyers out there for their product
• How their product compares to their competitors’
• If their website can help them sell their product

Talking about websites, here are some reasons why those who use it in an attempt to make money online fail:

Lack of proper User Interface Design

Login, Register, Window, Button, Website to show why 97 per cent of Online Workers Fail

“A great user interface is so seamless that we don’t even think about it … But a poor user interface tends to make us frustrated, impatient, even angry – And we inherently remember that negative experience for a longer time,” Justin Mifsud.

The first visual element that greets a visitor to your site is the design. And as we know, first impression lasts. Which means that you don’t often have the opportunity to correct a first bad impression. The reaction of the visitor to the interface come from subconscious processes and you only have about 5—7 seconds to capture their attention. So successful online workers:

• keep their website design spot on to capture their visitors and make them stay
• don’t think of saving money on design but rather hire professionals for the Job
• ensure their website loads quickly
• do not use fancy animations as they take time to load and are difficult to be indexed by Google
• ensure that their website design is responsive and renders properly on tablets & mobile devices

Lack of quality content

Blog, Web Page, Web Design, Blogging to show why 97 per cent of Online Workers Fail

This is so important for your success online that I’m going to put two quotes here from two famous bloggers:

“There are tons of different factors that go into ranking well, but the biggest is high-quality content,” David Sinick.

“When you write remarkable content, you stay engaged and excited with your blog. Your readers follow suit,” Seth Godin.

If you went shopping, you would choose quality products and ignore mediocre ones, wouldn’t you? It’s the same with website visitors. They have the choice between eagerly consuming quality content and coming back for more or clicking themselves forever with disdain out of poorly written ones.

Online workers who succeed well in their business are those:

• who offer quality content including headlines and product descriptions and massively increase sales
• whose contents educate and inspire their prospects to read more, sign up to their email newsletter and especially take action and buy their products
• who cleverly employ emotional triggers by focusing on benefits, experiences and results that their products will give their existing customers and future prospects
• who encourage Visitor comments on their website as it helps in generating engagement and trust of visitors

Lack of quality E-Commerce Backbone/Software

Iconset, Icon, Cart, Add To Cart, Set

“Leadership in telecommunications is also essential, since we are now in the age of e-commerce,” Michael Oxley, FBI Agent.

A saying goes in West Africa that ‘Don’t mind the body, mind the engine.’ This means that what makes a system runs is more important than the system itself. So using poor quality e-commerce backbone will affect usability, not only for you but also for your customers. Why not when the products will be poorly laid out, the discounting feature and search engine optimization features missing and the PCI code non compliant? But for people who succeed online:

• their e-commerce software loads fast
• they have a great structure for the user so they can find products easily
• their site is built so Google can find and index their products with ease.

Now what?

Now that you know which 97% of people fail online and which succeed and how, aren’t you desirous to know how you can be part of the latter?

Sure, you can become part of the 3% that succeed online. By joining Wealthy Affiliate.

If you do THIS, you CAN’T fail

That’s the title of a mail Kyle, the CEO and co-founder of the Wealthy Affiliate, sent me recently when I became a premium member. This got me thinking that there’s no fatality in that 97% failure figure.

KYLE’S MAIL

Beginning

Hi Akoli,

First off, congratulations … You have taken initiative towards your own personal success and I know it will be just a matter of time before you are earning a consistent income online.

BUT, today I want to discuss the idea of ENSURING your success.

I can honestly tell you that there is a sure way to achieve success online, but first I want to help you understand how to achieve success through my personal journey from back in 2002 when I started out. This will give you a ton of perspective on how success happened for me and how it will likely “look” like for you.

Here is my story…

I started back in 2002. No job. No incoming flow of money. Notta.

Just some really hefty school bills as I was attending college at the time that were piling up as “debt” (the idea of which I have always hated). I still remember that day someone told me I could make money on the Internet and they showed me proof that they were earning money.

Guess who showed me this?

Carson, whom 3 years later I joined up with and we created Wealthy Affiliate (after we both independently created successful affiliate businesses online).

This was my first “taste” of starting something on my own, so I was not quite sure what sort of revenue to expect. The first month I worked my butt off, creating a website (which was an arduous task back then) and building some, what I thought at the time was, quality content.

My first month I made a whopping $0. I worked hard with ZERO revenue.
Did I give up?

Absolutely not. Although I wasn’t financially successful, I had created a website. My very own website. That was a freakin’ accomplishment to me! I had also learned how to write a page of content and get it published. These were both successes in my eyes. I was still in the process of learning and building my foundation. Really, how could I be mad at myself, I was in the process of spending $10,000’s in school fees and several YEARS of schooling before I ever had the chance to make money.

So moving on, guess what I made my 2nd month?

$0.

Now you are probably saying, what the hell Kyle, why didn’t you quit? The reason. I had built my foundation for success and I knew from other “success stories” and the fact that the Internet had billions of people buying stuff online every day, that an online business was a reality for me. I just had to give it time and make it work! I knew I was getting close. I was….and my hard work from the first two months PAID off.

Early in month 3, I made my first SALE online. WOOHOO! I nearly jumped out of my seat when I logged into my affiliate account and saw a sale of just over $40!!
And from there, things started to snowball. The work I had done in the first two months started to pay dividends.

Then by Month 6: I was making a consistent income. I was able to pay off all my student debt and I was able to fund my “school” lifestyle. 🙂

By Month 12: I was pretty much full time. I was earning enough to work full time, but I was still scared of the idea of working from home. This fear quickly dissolved and a few months later I started to work from home full time.

And here we are 11 YEARS Later: I am still working from home and I love EVERY MINUTE of it! I would not trade this lifestyle for the world.

I just had my first child (baby girl, Scotland) and I couldn’t imagine how much more difficult it would have been if I wasn’t able to work from home and help my wife with the day to day duties. 🙂

BUT, none of this would have been possible if I quit. If I gave up. If I said after that second month of $0 in revenue, “this doesn’t work”.

This leads me to YOU and YOUR success. How can I ensure that you will be successful online? Quite easy.

Give yourself ENOUGH time to achieve success. By this I mean, giving yourself more than a month…and even two months. Give yourself at least one year to get your own personal business and success rolling and you will ensure that you will be successful.
Not only will you access the top training community in the world … , you are going to be ensuring your success by giving yourself adequate TIME to build your business. Out of all the people I have worked with over the last 10 years, I have never seen someone fail that didn’t quit. This is true to this day …

End

  1. Great post you have written a superb article full of good information and facts about working on-line.Your paragraph on quality of content is awesome and I have learnt a lot from your site. Thank you for an informative and very interesting post.

    1. Hi Thomas Gormley,
I’m happy to see you here. Thank you for your in-depth comments on my piece. I’m heading over to your site to check a piece there too.

      Keep up the group spirit.

  2. Akoli, you write a very good article, yes… i agree with you that most people quit early before they success and yes, success is a long journey.

    1. Hi Henry,

Thanks for liking my article. Our duty is to serve. Yes, people don’t succeed because they expect success to come tomorrow instead of giving their business time to mature. Yes, success is a journey and not a destination.

      Thanks.

  3. Hi there Akoli,

97% fails? That’s quite a depressing amount of people in my opinion, but I am quite sure that because of the easy access into the online world (You’re not just going to “try” to open up a restaurant, but you can just “try out” an online business.), many fail without even trying. 🙂 Your tips here are great. Education, determination, setting a goal of producing quality and making it user-friendly. It’s as simple (and complicated) as that. 🙂
I like all of your tips are to be read between the lines as your site is exactly set up following the principles you offer us here. I’ll make sure to write them down somewhere. 🙂 Good luck!

    1. Yes, Maarten, the failure rate online is depressingly high. From my own experience just trying to succeed online and what I’m doing at Wealthy Affiliate now, I see that the greatest reson for failure online is lack of training. I’ve learnt so much at Wealthy Affiliate that I ignored before. Whilst it needs quality training to succeed online. You’re right, online work has been presented to people as the easiest business to do, unlike the others where investments (of all sorts) are needed.

Such a high failure rate is an opportunity for we at WA to convince people to get affiliate training.

      Thanks for visiting.
      Akoli
