You built a website for your affiliate marketing business but all the traffic you’re getting to it is a trickle. How do you turn that into an ocean? Here are 19 affiliate marketing strategies to use this year.

#1: Content Comes First
All said and done, the most important thing about your website is content. It’s like the engine of your car. (And SEO is like the fuel).
That is why I said in 135 things you need to know about affiliate marketing to be successful that “Content is the alpha and omega of your site.”
Without content you website is doomed. So as an online worker you must make content marketing strategy your highest priority.
Without valuable and helpful content among others, Google and the other search engines like Bing and Yahoo! can’t rank your site.
Hence you can’t have sufficient readers. Consequently you can’t have people considering your recommendations. You can’t also make money from your ads, be they CPM, CPC, or referral based.
#2: Drive traffic to your affiliate site
Now, you’ve built a nice-looking website. You’ve created great content with affiliate links naturally embedded into it. How do you get more people to the website to read your content and click on your affiliate links?
Let’s look at two ways.
A. Use paid traffic
To get paid traffic you must run ads.
Running ads calls for money. This may come out of pocket or from your profits, if you’re making any.
You can pay for traffic using PPC ads.
The beauty of paid traffic is that it starts coming to your site immediately you pay for it. And of course it ceases once you stop paying for the ads.
When must you use paid ads?
Paid ads are used in specific cases. It is indicated if you are part of a high-paying affiliate program and can make the numbers work. But you may forget it if you’re new to paid marketing and have no marketing budget. Or, if you are promoting low-paying commission programs like Amazon Associates.
B. Get organic traffic with Search engine optimization (SEO)
SEO consists in optimizing your site and pages to rank high in the search engines like Google.
Once you can do those for your target keywords, you can expect to receive consistent and passive traffic.
What is SEO?
On the most basic level, it is about:
- Searching for the keywords your target customers are using to perform their searches
- Creating content such as blog posts, product pages, etc. around those topic ideas
- Doing the “technical” stuff (including link building) to push these pages higher in the search engines results pages

#3: Use content writing to drive traffic
When you first begin you affiliate marketing business, you will be better off concentrating your efforts on SEO (content writing). Just focus on getting traffic and relegate the other matters to the background for the moment.
#4: Concentrate on building your website
Your website once built is not an end in itself.
For the moment it can do without having accounts on Instagram, Facebook (Page) and Twitter.
The best strategy is to simply focus your attention on building out your website.
#5: Traffic is a long-term game
Traffic is what you need most to succeed in your affiliate marketing business. But like everything else, it takes time to build.
No matter how hungry you are, when you order food in a restaurant, it will take time for it to be delivered to you.
Unlike food, there are things you can do to get traffic and more of it.
#6: The more you post the more traffic you get
Too much of everything is bad, they say.
We know there’s an exception to every rule.
Fortunately that’s the case with traffic.
The first post can bring you 10 people a day.
The next one could be what increases it from those 10 visitors to 100 people a day. And so on up to 500 or best 1200 visitors a day when you begin to make sales.
#7: Not all posts will get you traffic
All posts are created to bring you traffic but not all posts will funnel the same or expected amount of traffic to your website.
The 80/20 rule* applies here.
Some of your content will result in a surge of traffic, others will drive little traffic and more others will bring insignificant amount of traffic.
That’s the reality of blogging. You have to accept it as such.

#8: Traffic is a numbers game
In point #4 above we told you to keep working on your website.
Yes, there’s no other way out to build your affiliate marketing business.
After working for a while on your website, you will begin to know what works and what doesn’t thanks to some key data points. (More on this in points #15 and #16 below)
#9: You need a content plan
Benjamin Franklin’s “By failing to prepare, you’re preparing to fail” holds true here too. For this reason you must have a content plan.
Ideally, you would post once a day for 5 days a week.
The barest minimum when you begin to get good traffic is one post per week.
You must also know which time of the day to post to reach your target audience.
#10: Success is a numbers game
It’s not for nothing that they proclaim “Content is king”.
This is because content is the thing having great power or control in your online business.
The more content you publish, the more traffic you will drive. The more traffic you receive, the more leads you will see. The more leads you generate, the higher the number of conversions you will have. The more conversions you have, the higher your chances of affiliate marketing success.
#11: Just keep publishing in your first year
You maybe know that refreshing old blog posts can sometimes increase traffic exponentially to your website.
This is what Brian Dean of backlinko.com did. He boosted organic traffic to his site by a whopping 260% simply by updating and relaunching an old post.

The tool Brian uses to know which post to work on is the (free) Animalz Revive tool.
You can also do that. But in your first year you would be better off posting content on your website.
The Animalz Revive tool depends on your Google Analytics to find pages showing the biggest traffic drop. This page must be at least a year old. This is why we told you to wait a whole year before trying to optimize your old blog posts.
#12: Create great content
For your affiliate marketing site to be a success, you need to create high-quality content in which your affiliate links fit naturally.
This is what Tim Ferriss did when he interviewed 100+ famous people with the question: “What purchase of $100 or less has most positively impacted your life in the last six months (or in recent memory)?”
Tim used the answers which he put together as a blog post and seamlessly integrated his affiliate links into the products mentioned in them:

This is a winning strategy you must endeavor to copy when creating content for your affiliate marketing site.
#13: Evergreen or timeless content works best
Evergreen content is the one that will remain relevant for many years.
While you must ceaselessly publish content, you already know that not all content works well for traffic. For this reason you must always try to write evergreen content.
This should not be news-type articles if success is important to you in the beginning. You can afford to do news later.
But content, even evergreen ones, gets buried under newer ones. It eventually gets buried in the depths of your blog library.
As it’s no longer visible for visitors to consult it, its value may decrease.
But do you know that old content may still be valuable?
True, the content of information evolves constantly, making the old outdated and therefore no longer useful.
This explains why when a visitor falls on an old content of yours (judging by the date), they will click themselves out of your site right away.
You can make your content timeless by updating it regularly and adding links.
Constantly updating your older articles will, at worst, maintain your search engine rankings and, at best, improve it.
Some website platforms solve this problem to some extent by displaying your “most recent” or “most popular” or “related articles” on every page.
You may also get over it by removing the dates from your blog posts. For no matter how still completely pertinent your content is, many readers will dismiss it as outdated just because of the older date it bears.
Here is a useful rule of thumb to always remember: for every two pieces of new and updated content, write an evergreen one.
You can’t write?
Gary Vaynerchuk advises to, “document, don’t create.”
Documenting your experience or something useful you’ve learned can make interesting reading and attract people who will be interested in following your progress.
If documenting is difficult or impossible for you, the way out is to outsource your content.

#14: Get the power of SEO
Like you, people go online when looking for information.

Therefore to benefit from organic traffic from the search engines, you should learn to do the basics of SEO properly.

#17: Mind your traffic sources
What are your traffic sources?
They may include organic, paid, social media, referral, display, email, or direct traffic.
It’s important to know where each of these is coming from as well as the demographics of your audience.
In this way you can customize your messaging accordingly to provide the best affiliate product recommendations.

Google Analytics discussed in #16 furnishes you traffic source data such as time on page, bounce rate, geo location, age, gender, time of day, devices (mobile vs. desktop), etc.
Checking these will make you focus your effort on the highest converting traffic.
From the screenshot below you would agree that this analytics data is crucial to making informed decisions, increasing your conversion rates, and making more affiliate sales.
#18: Constantly test and optimize your conversion rates
Let’s imagine that you have a channel where you’re promoting a product with your affiliate links.
Let’s suppose that you are receiving 750 visits/day at a 2% conversion rate, that gives you 15 referrals.
To get to 30 referrals, you have 2 possibilities.
Either you strive to get 750 more visitors or you work to double the conversion rate to 4%.
Which do you think would be easier to do?
If you seek to build Domain Authority with blogging and guest posts to get more organic traffic, it will take you months.
But landing page optimization, testing your calls-to-action, and having a conversion rate optimization strategy can increase the conversion rate by 2% in no time.
Thus testing and optimizing your site will get you far better results with much less effort than increasing (doubling) your traffic.
#19: Do you need other tools?
The problem of newbie affiliate marketers is to collect a large number of tools thinking that is the best way to achieve success.
But it’s the opposite which is observed. Lending credence to the saying that too much of everything is bad. That is why the plethora of tools paralyzes them into inaction.
So for the time being stick to the two tools (#15 and #16above). They will give you all the data you need to continue moving on the right trajectory.
