Affiliate marketing is the wave of the future and we would like to share our number one recommendation in the affiliate marketing field and we will gladly give you a free tour!

The following are the initial terms you will come into contact with when you start working in affiliate marketing.

#01: What is affiliate marketing?

To start, and for the sake of people who are new to it, just what is affiliate marketing?

In modern digital marketing landscape, the term refers to the promotion by an individual of another person’s products or services, often through an affiliate network using an affiliate link, to earn a cut of the sales price.

The sales are tracked via affiliate links from one website to another.

Now, let’s look at what Neil Patel thinks is the best definition of affiliate marketing given by Pat Flynn’s Smart Passive Income:

Affiliate marketing is the process of earning a commission by promoting other people’s (or company’s) products. You find a product you like, promote it to others and earn a piece of the profit for each sale that you make.

That means that affiliate marketing is a performance-based marketing system. What you get from it is proportional to what you put into it. Therefore honing your reviewing skills and writing engaging campaigns will translate to direct improvements in your revenue.

#02: Parties involved in affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing is a perfect illustration of the division of labour. It basically involves four distinct elements who play different roles.

They are 1) the merchant, 2) the affiliate marketer, 3) the consumer, and 4) the affiliate network.

Wikipedia also talks about 4 parties that are involved in affiliate marketing: the merchant, the network, the publisher, and the customer.

Other definitions however mention only 3 parties: the merchant, the publisher, and the customer as shown in the image below:

Three partners of affiliate maketing: advertiser, publisher and consumer

Now, let’s look at them.

The merchant

The merchant, also known as the seller, the product creator, the business, the vendor, the brand, the advertiser or the retailer, is an individual or a business that creates a product or a service and offers them to be promoted by an affiliate.

The product can be a physical one, like household goods, or a service, like makeup tutorials.

The merchant can be a big company, like AWeber, an email services provider or an individual solo entrepreneur like to individuals and companies.

This means that solo entrepreneurs, startups, and massive Fortune 500 companies could be the merchant in an affiliate marketing program.

In addition to the marketable products or services, the merchant also provides the strategies to promote their offers.

The affiliate

The affiliate, also known as the publisher, is also an individual or a company that implements strategies to promote products and services offered by the merchant for a commission on each sale. The affiliate does this by creating marketing campaigns with ads, links and banners, and other marketing tools to find the consumer.

The affiliate plays a crucial role in affiliate marketing.

81% of brands and 84% of publishers leverage the power of affiliate marketing. This statistic is expected to continue to increase as affiliate marketing spending expands every year in the United States.

There is a 10.1% increase in affiliate marketing spending in the United States each year. This means that by 2020, that number will reach $6.8 billion.

It is at the affiliate’s side that the marketing happens. They sell one or several affiliate products and services by attracting and convincing potential customers of the benefit or value of the merchant’s product that they may end up buying.

Affiliates often market to a very specific audience, generally adhering to that audience’s interests. That is, the promotion is done within a defined niche or personal brand that enables the affiliate to attract consumers most likely to act on the offer.

Some affiliate networks will pay the affiliate simply for getting people to click on your links. This is called lead generation. Your links take the person to the company’s website where they enter into a sales funnel. Should a sale be made, you may also get a slice of the sale.

The consumer

The consumer, also known as the buyer or the purchaser, is the entity that patronizes the merchant’s goods or services marketed by the affiliate and thus makes the affiliate system go ’round. For without these drivers of the affiliate system, there wouldn’t be sales to keep the merchant and the network in business and no commissions to make the affiliate keep working.

The affiliate will try to market to the consumer on channels such as social networks, digital billboards or content marketing on a blog.

Consumer do not generally realize that they are part of an affiliate marketing system. But for the sake of transparency, the affiliate is now obliged to disclose that they are receiving commission for the sales they make.

The consumer will not typically pay a higher price because of the intervention of the affiliate marketer, as the commission is already included in the affiliate network’s retail price.

The network

The network, also called the program or the platform, is an intermediary that puts the goods or services of several merchants at the disposal of affiliates. In other words, the network is a digital platform that the merchant and the affiliate use to handle referral link clicks, purchases, and payouts.

As an intermediary body, the network is automated to track the affiliate’s customers’ clicks, the affiliate’s sales, and calculates payments due from the merchant.

While some networks, like Commission Junction, do not consider the network as part of the affiliate marketing equation, I believe it is because of its usual role as an intermediary between the affiliate and the merchant.

The network side of the equation is where the promotion happens. An affiliate network promotes one or multiple merchant products and attracts and convinces potential affiliates of the value of the merchant’s product so that they may decide to market it for a commission.

While you could actually promote an online affiliate marketing course someone has created and get a direct revenue share from them, getting a network such as ClickBank or Commission Junction handle the payment and product delivery makes the affiliate marketing business look more serious.

In the second case, the affiliates have to go through an affiliate network to promote the product. This is because the merchant only manages their affiliate program on that network.

For the affiliate also, using the network is interesting as it serves as a database of lots of products, out of which they can choose which to promote.

ClickBank is a notable example of an affiliate network. You can use it to promote digital products, like eBooks, software, etc. Their ClickBank affiliate program lets you promote any of the over 10,000 items available on their platform.

As for consumer products, like tools, books, toys and household items, the biggest affiliate network is Amazon. Their Amazon Associates affiliate program lets you promote items on their platform.

You can sign up to both networks and generate a custom affiliate link to the products. If someone purchases through your link, you earn a commission.

#03: Best affiliate marketing networks or programs to join

There are multitudes of affiliate networks and programs out there. Consider these factors before choosing to join any of them.

Not all the good programs or networks are popular. If you want to join one that you don’t know very well, consult reviews and ratings to see how legitimate it is.

The niche

Choose programs or categories whose products or services have a high demand and that you are passionate about promoting.

The commission rate

If you want to make more money, you could promote products with low commission but high demand or high commission items for which you can generate sales. In the latter, even a few sales will make you nice commissions.

Payment methods

Not all affiliate programs use the same methods to pay out. Therefore before joining any, check to be sure that the payment methods used are available in your country. I have had to miss out on promoting some interesting programs because they pay out only by Paypal.

While people in all Africans countries (I think) can send money through this processor, only a couple can receive money through it.

I have asked Paypal about this twice, and each time they cited local regulations and the like, which I find strange. Local regulations generally prevent money from going out (because of foreign exchange restrictions) and not coming in (which is good for the economy)!

Some programs are limited to specific countries. For example, for sometime, free Starter Membership was NOT available at Wealthy Affiliate in Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Kenya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, and Vietnam. I think the ban is now only applicable to Nigeria. So you may want to check this as well for any program before you try to join.

Below are some very popular global affiliate programs and networks that you can join today and start earning…

#04: The commission

The commission is a part of the sales price of a good or service that the network pays to the affiliate for sending them a consumer who takes a desired action, such as a purchase. Commissions can be as low as 1% with physical products and go as high as 75% with digital products.

How you get paid

Depending on the affiliate network/program, you get paid affiliate commissions in various ways.

When you make a sale, there’s a waiting period before your money arrives:

  • New account (first payment delay, typically 30 days)
  • Money back guarantee period (to avoid returns and chargebacks)
  • Affiliate network (merchant delay with topping-up accounts)

You will get paid your commission via PayPal, cheque, or direct deposit. Other options are Egopay, LeuPay, Okpay, Neteller, Payoneer, Payeer, Skrill, Payza, Solid Trust Pay, Paxum, Perfect Money, and Bitcoin — currently some of the most popular payment methods.

Now, with affiliate marketing and the basic terms clarified, let’s see if you and affiliate marketing are a good fit for each other.

The following are the things to know before getting into affiliate marketing. They will help you decide if affiliate marketing is really what you would want to do.

#05: Affiliate marketing is not easy

If you think affiliate marketing is easy money, then you are in for a shock. For it is not. When I first started I had this erroneous idea. So much so that I named my first blog it-is-easy-to-make-money-at-home. But should you still be entertaining this idea, I will entreat you not to continue reading this post, especially if you’re not ready to let go of it. It will be a massive waste of your time.

#6: Affiliate marketing demands work

Since affiliate marketing is not easy, this means that it requires a lot of work on your part. You must endeavor to learn the best strategies from the successful affiliate marketers (Resources at the end) and apply them to your own business. Do not look for any rest until success comes. You must work so hard in the beginning that at the end you can relax and enjoy passive income. This is the money that falls into your account even when you’re sleeping. This means the “work on the beach” life is for the seasoned affiliate marketer but not the beginner.

#7: Affiliate marketing has a 96% failure rate from the beginning

The fact that 96% of affiliates never make any money go to prove point N° 1 above that affiliate marketing is not easy money. It’s so hard that only 4% of those who start it go somewhere past the first 3 months.

For 99% of people, affiliate marketing is how they got started (working online from home). – Affiliate Marketing Made Simple: A Step-by-Step Guide

#8: Affiliate marketing has a 90% success rate after one year

Out of the 4% affiliates who go beyond one year, only some 90%+ of them further succeed. We said in point #6 above that you must learn and apply winning strategies. All of us know that learning to master something and successfully apply them takes time. This is when 10% of those who went beyond the 3 months critical period further drop out from lack of patience.

#9: Competition is high in affiliate marketing

The low entry barrier and the high profit margins make affiliate marketing the most popular online marketing system. As it attracts a large number of affiliates to create new businesses, we end up with many fighting for the attention of almost the same consumers (people online). This is what makes competition very high and prevent new businesses from growing.

#10: How to mitigate affiliate marketing competition

Is it all lost then?

No. To mitigate the competition and succeed, you must differentiate yourself from the hundreds and thousands of affiliates marketing the same product. This is done through offering bonus items, training videos, creating better content or even giving cash back.

The affiliate who is more creative and offers valuable incentives attracts the highest traffic to their sites.

#11: Affiliate marketing takes time

By now you must have guessed it: affiliate marketing not only takes time but also lots of it. The keyword to success in it is perseverance.

Affiliate marketing is not a get-rich-quick scheme. If you keep on learning, applying and testing, you may get to the top.

#12: You need targets and goals for a whole year

Set your targets and goals over a period of one year. The target is the time limit and the goal is the amount. You may divide this into short-range (say 3 months), medium-range (say 6 months) and long-range (say 1 year) goals. You might achieve your goal earlier than you programmed, but it’s likely you won’t get there at all.

#13: Revise your strategy if first 2 goals are not met

If you’re following what you think are the right steps but not making any money in 3 to 6 months, know that you’re doing it all wrong. That’s why it’s important to set goals. Anytime you don’t achieve any of them, you’ll know and re-strategize.

#14: Benchmark for re-strategizing

Going from $0 to $100 takes 6 months, and continuing from $100 to $1000 takes a month. This is what you may use to adjust your plans.

#15: Constantly monitor your affiliate links

Although it can be time-consuming, you have no choice but to constantly maintain your affiliate links. This is because affiliate programs come and go. So if you don’t consistently check your links, you may be promoting products that no longer exist or links that are broken.

#16: Check if there is a cap on affiliate sales

Some affiliate programs put a cap on how many sales you can make a month. This is mainly the case in lead generation campaigns but they are not so commonly used these days. So if there’s a maximum of 10 sales a month each affiliate can earn commission on, and you generate 100 sales in a month, you are paid for only 10 sales.

#17: The affiliate marketer is dependent on the affiliate network

If there were no merchants, affiliate programs or affiliate networks, it would be difficult, if not outright impossible, to become an affiliate marketer. As a marketer, the affiliate counts on the merchant for marketing tools like banners and links. And the affiliate remains in business as long as the merchant does. Should the merchant stop running the business or their program, the affiliate marketer simply loses that source of income.

That’s why you must not put all your eggs in one basket by relying on a single affiliate program for your affiliate revenue source!

#18: The affiliate marketer’s final conversion rate depends on the merchant’s

As an affiliate, your only main work is to generate leads. That’s why the affiliate network gives you affiliate links. Once someone clicks on those on your site or elsewhere like social media, the link takes them to the merchant’s site. This platform must be optimized for you to make sales. Otherwise you will drive hundreds of leads but will make little to no cash.

Now that you have decided both you and affiliate marketing can make good bedfellows, let’s try to know what it entails.

What we saw above is like going on a date. After you have appraised each other and decided you are compatible, you must now learn to know each other on a deeper level. That’s what we’re going to do here, learning the ins and outs of affiliate marketing.

#19: Is affiliate marketing a pyramid scheme?

Not at all. In a pyramid scheme there’s no product to promote. You only make money recruiting people for the program. You must however think of affiliate marketing as a performance-based marketing system. That is, it is basically a commission only sales job. You only get paid every time you drive a sale to a business.

If affiliate marketing is not a pyramid scheme, what is it then?

#20: How affiliate marketing works

Every company seeks to scale up its business through attracting more customers. Being capable of bringing in more customers, affiliate marketing is used by companies to ensure this source of revenue.

Thus a store, named X Inc. that sells electronic gadgets in the US through various channels (online and traditional stores) and thinks that the current customer base is not sufficient for its business targets, may want to increase access to new markets and to a new customer base through affiliate marketing.

X Inc. then starts a partnership program alone or with a network wherein they commit to paying a commission for sales made by affiliates who join the program.

These affiliates (e.g. bloggers and other digital marketing professionals) set up marketing campaigns to sell the products of X Inc. to their customers through their websites and/or other sources like social media platforms. X Inc. or the network then pays out the commission when a sale is made.

The diagram below explains it all:

#21: What happens when a customer clicks on an affiliate link?

When an affiliate marketer signs up with an affiliate marketing program or network, they receive a unique link. This enables the merchant track the affiliate responsible for a sale.

Below is how the link will usually look like: affiliate com

When a potential customer clicks that link, a snippet of code called a cookie will be stored on their device.

The affiliate cookie (usually) holds an expiration date, so you get paid when the buyer makes the purchase recommended as well as others within that time period.

So when a reader visits my Wealthy Affiliate Review and clicks on an affiliate link, this leads them to the Wealthy Affiliate site. (If the link was a product on Clickbank, for instance, it will lead the reader to the product page on Clickbank).

Let’s say for a certain reason the reader did not make the purchase at the time. But within the cookie period of 30 days they come back to the Wealthy Affiliate site to complete the purchase without necessarily passing through my affiliate link.

Imagine that they also decide to purchase a subscription to the power version of the Jaaxy keyword research tool (every WealthyAffiliate member has free access to the basic version).  On using it, they discover the tool reveals some parked domains for sale. Instead of building a website, they decide to acquire a domain to sell or develop it out further for personal use.

I get paid commissions for the three purchases.

What happened was that when they clicked on my affiliate link, a cookie was stored on their device. Because of that, I got compensated for the Wealthy Affiliate and Jaaxy subscriptions as well as for the domain purchase, even though I didn’t promote the last two.

#22: Why does affiliate marketing work so well?

Everyone who sets up a business has in mind to make more revenue, grow and dominate the market. So, they must put strategies in place to attract more customers to achieve that goal.

We know that companies use huge budgets to put out advertisements to promote or make their products or services known to the public, especially through the mass media. This is what makes the Coca Cola Company to sell its drinks like hot cake.

But since advertising is so effective, why don’t companies just continue to pay for it but also resort to affiliate marketing?

Studies have shown that consumers are far more likely to purchase something based on the recommendation from someone they know, like, and trust than on an ad from a business.

#23: Learn to know your audience

Knowing your audience can let you have better success with the products you are promoting. It can also help you know the best places to market, advertise, and promote your website to attract visitors.

You must continually learn to know your audience. For people change; And the more you know your audience the better you can use demographics, psychographics, and other information to better target your audience when advertising on social platforms like Facebook

#24: Help, not sell

You’re in affiliate marketing to sell, right? Wrong. People hate being sold to. How then can you make money without selling? Know that if you make it your objective to provide information to help your prospects solve problems, they’ll love you for it. And because of this love, they will purchase the products that you don’t so auspiciously promote.

You will get all you want in life, if you help enough other people get what they want.” – Zig Zigglar.

#25: Provide the best information

If you’re going to help your prospects by providing them information, then make sure it is the best possible. This is what the best affiliates do, in addition to having great selling skills. They know that if they don’t furnish people with the best information, they will go elsewhere for it and may never come back.

#26: Website or no website?

You’ve no doubt come across the debate whether you need a website or not to do affiliate marketing. In fact, you don’t need a website per se for it. But without one your success will be limited. Your website is where you’re going to post content. It is the place to build your email list. Short, it is the platform for developing and displaying your affiliate marketing skills.

#27: “Work from the beach” is not for affiliate marketing

You can’t lounge under a reclining coconut tree on a sandy beach facing the wavy blue sea with a laptop on your thighs and succeed in affiliate marketing.

This “work from the beach” is often used by gurus to portray affiliate marketing as easy in order to lure newbies into their teams or downlines. This paints the unfortunate picture that you can take it easy and see money fall into your account. Yet the exotic image is only in the eyes of the beholder. And it sucks.

The reality is, affiliate marketing involves work like any other type of business.

An African proverb goes that money is found in the middle of cacti. This means anyone not ready to get spiked should not think of making money.

#28: Affiliate marketing is the hardest easiest business!

Ah, what an ambivalence! But yes, affiliate marketing is the hardest, easiest money-making activity out there. It’s the hardest because it’s some form of science but it’s the easiest since everybody can learn it.

With a knowledge of what goes into affiliate marketing, let’s see how you can go about it.

So while looking for a niche, make sure that there are search terms people are using when looking for your niche information so that you can feature among the top 10 search engine results pages.

#31: Choose your niche

Statista estimates that the number of bloggers in the U.S. alone will reach 31.7 million by 2020. So if you’re starting a blog anywhere in the world today, it goes without saying that you’re facing a lot more competition.

The only means for you to stand the best chance of success is to niche down.

You must focus on a specific category. “Food” is an enormous category but “grilling food” is small enough to handle.

Such tight topics can help you build a more focused audience and potentially help you rank higher in search engines.

See how Si Quan Ong did this when he built his first site limiting himself to just breakdancing instead of talking about “dance” or “hip hop”. He claimed he didn’t know anything about SEO back then, but he managed to rank for a few key terms and generate ~3,000 organic visits per month.

#32: It is importance to choose the right niche

The details in #30 above show that there are many niches for you to pick from. Taking the one you are passionate about is the best niche for you. Even if you work for months without seeing any results, it will keep you going because of your strong enthusiasm for it.

#33: There are consequences for choosing the wrong niche

If you follow the above steps, it is likely that you will choose the right niche. But should you pick the wrong one, you could do everything right for 12 months (the long-range goal mentioned in #12 above) and still have nothing to show for it.

#34: Monetization setup

Having chosen your niche, you must now analyze its moneymaking potential. Here are some of them:

Create your own product: Your own product could be an eBook, a video training series or paper book.

You can create your own product using PLR from buyqualityplr

Affiliate marketing: You could sign up free with affiliate networks or programs. For Digital product affiliate marketing, you can sign at ClickBank, the largest one affiliate marketing network. Concerning Physical product affiliate marketing, we suggest an affiliate marketing program like Amazon Affiliates program, etc. In matters of other affiliate programs, search for your “niche name” and join those you like. You can also join eBay, etc. Amazon and eBay have anything any niche can offer.

Publishing ads: Many are available. But the most popular ones are GoogleAdsense and Mediavine.

#35: Abandon a niche you can’t monetize

If you check the above and can’t see any way you are going to monetize your chosen niche, then it’s not a good one for you. And you know what to do to something that isn’t good for you, don’t you? You toss it out the window. And look for another one.

#36: There’s keen rivalry in affiliate marketing but enough place for all

Another ambivalence, you may say.

Yes, competition in the affiliate marketing field is fierce, but that shouldn’t in the least scare you from it.

All the successful affiliate marketers you see around have had to face it. But if they had let it scare them away years ago, they wouldn’t have been here as examples for us to follow.

The answer to the competition simply lies in finding a niche which by definition is a part of a larger market where there is money to be made but little or no competition.

#37: Affiliate marketing is a scam, right?

No, affiliate marketing per se is not a scam. But you will fall into one quicker than you can stamp shit off your new, shiny shoes if you’re spending your hard-earned money and precious time looking for get-rich-quick schemes.

#38: Decide on the platform to use

Affiliate marketing can be done on any platform where the affiliate can send a message to a customer. Even social networks. See below how this affiliate marketer does it on Instagram.

We’ve already seen in point #26 above that although a website is not a sine qua non condition for doing affiliate marketing, going into it without one can make you leave money on the table. Rather, having a website can contribute to you becoming a very successful affiliate marketer.

#39: It’s easy to build a website

Websites are easy and cheap to create. Gone are the days when you needed technical knowledge like HTML, Javascript, etc before you could build one. Swept forever into history are also the times when you had to fork out large sums of money to have someone build a website for you. It’s now just as easy as registering an account on a social network.

20 Tips to Create Your Website Design and Build Your Brand Identity

When your site is up, optimize it for search engines to give you a better chance of ranking. Then you can add affiliate links in your content.

When using affiliate links in your marketing, you must be transparent about your relationship with the merchant! It’s now legally required to disclose that you’re including affiliate links in your content for which you will receive a commission. In effect, the Federal Trade Commissions (FTC) requires you to be transparent when receiving income from an endorsement. Make sure you are following the latest FTC guidelines here to stay safe.

If you’re using a blog, create a standalone page for it, or include it in the footer of your website as shown below:

#40: A simple website will do

If you think you need a flashy website in order to be noticed among the millions out there, then think again. Your website does not in the least need to be fancy. Any theme that has a white background, black text and a clean look will do just fine.

Just have a look at my homepage. It’s so simple no visitor is going to be distracted by anything. People can easily get what I want them to find on my site.

#41: Should you use free or premium themes to build your website?

I created my first blog on the free platform and my second on a free WordPress one. Thinking a premium one would serve me better, I purchased one and found myself with a complicated theme. Now I’ve gone back to a free WordPress theme. Check it here if you haven’t yet done it above. You can go for premium themes when you start making $1000s a day. Till then, stick to the free ones.

#42: Get your domain

Free or premium theme, you need a domain. This is your website URL without the https://www. Get one here or there.

The best way is to take your best keyword term and register it as a .com name.

For our example, the domain name could be or

If you check with your domain name registrar and your chosen domain name is taken, you may add stop words (by, the, do, go, etc.) which search engines do not recognize.

Your new domain name may then be or

The search engines still consider these domain names as still startaffiliatemarketing because they do not see the stop word “go”.

#43: Set up hosting

This can be done at a company that will rent you space on their server where you’ll build your site, keep your files and display your site’s contents to the world via the net.

We recommend hostgator for the best paying hosting.

Go to “View hosting plans” and “Order now”. and others offer free hosting.

#44: Install plugins

Plugins are snippets of code that extend the functionality of your basic WordPress theme. You can use them to add social media buttons to your site, to optimize images for speed, to keep off spam comments, and many other things.

As you can see plugins are great, but only use the strict minimum for your needs. Anything more than 5-10 plugins on a basic hosting plan will slow down your site and increase your bounce rate (the number of visitors who leave because they can’t wait all that long for your site to load).

#45: Your site’s loading speed is the Archbishop

If content is king, then your site’s loading speed is the Archbishop. For it’s the archbishop who crowns the king.

If your site’s loading speed is slow, Google will downgrade it in the ranks, so it will be hard for people to find your content. And even if they manage to find it, the loading speed will send them away before they could even read it.

Constantly monitor your site’s loading speed and keep it under 1-2 seconds. Anything over 2-3 seconds will make you lose visitors.

Google even takes your page loading speed into consideration to rank it.

#46: Check mobile readiness of your site

Even if your site looks great, do yourself the favour of going through it on mobile. Spend some time reading it. You will find a quite a number of things to fix.

Although my blog is mobile readable, from time to time Google sends me messages to fix a mobile related issue.

#47: Your “About Me” page builds trust

The beautiful place called the internet has unfortunately become a jungle infested with scammers and all sorts of bad characters. You therefore need to build trust with your website visitors. A way to accomplish that is to include an “About Me” page, including an image of you.

Check mine here.

#48: Build your online business mainly on your website

If you had an offline business, would you leave your shop or office to do business elsewhere? Your website is your online business. Always build and run your business on your website and not on other platforms. Social media platforms are great for business but they’re not yours. While you can be banned there, nobody can take your site away from you. (However your website on a free theme and hosting can be gone at anytime. One provider deleted my personal website when they ceased the free service some years back.)

Your blog and social media presence is what will make you KNOWN to customers. By sharing more and more valuable content online, you’ll also make your audience to LIKE you.

With the infrastructure firmly in your mind, let’s see the main things to do to succeed in the field.

#49: Find affiliate programs to join

Broadly, there are three types of affiliate programs to become a member of.

They are:

A. High-paying, low-volume affiliate programs

These affiliate programs give marketers high payouts for promoting niche products like software and web hosting-related products.

An example is ConvertKit’s affiliate program. They sell CRM software for small business owners. As such, the number of buyers is limited.

  • Save

(Image source: Affiliate Marketing for Beginners: 7 Steps to Success)

As it is to be expected, competition for such programs is high. Newbies should preferably stay away from them since it’s not easy to rival seasoned marketers with huge advertising budgets at their disposal.

B. Low-paying, high-volume affiliate programs

The affiliate programs available here offer low payouts but they have tons of products with mass appeal. They also often pay commissions on the other products rather than just the one you recommended.

An example is Amazon’s affiliate program. You earn up to 1 – 10% commissions on almost anything Amazon sells.

  • Save

High volumes of traffic are necessary to make these types of affiliate programs work.

C. High-paying, high-volume affiliate programs

These affiliate programs pay high commissions for products with mass appeal.

Credit cards are an example of this.

These programs also attract expert affiliate marketers with lots of funds for advertising.

#50: Which affiliate programs should you join?

As you can see from above, your level of expertise as well as your advertising budget count.

Generally, the second model of low commissions and higher sales volume will suit you if you’re targeting consumers.

For those courting a business audience, the first model of high-paying and low volume is presumably indicated.

Pro Tip: The best way to find these affiliate programs is through a Google search.

#51: Carefully choose the product or service to promote

Spend some time to go through different types of products or services available through different affiliate marketing programs. Put some thought into developing the ability to choose the right product or service for yourself and for your audience.

For yourself, you must be passionate about what you’re going to sell. And for the audience, you must offer them what they need to solve their problems. These two are determining in the success or failure of your affiliate marketing venture.

You should strongly consider promoting digital information products. They are generally cheap and have higher conversion rates since the purchaser can download them immediately on making the payment. Second, you make more profits with them since they typically offer much higher commission rates than physical products. Clickbank gives up to 75% commission

#52: Try to promote different programs

Affiliate programs aren’t created all the same. In effect, they offer different products, services, and payment structures. Some programs too will have better marketing and sales materials than others.

While some programs will have a 30-day payout on sales, others will offer 90 and a few more will make it lifetime.

So you now see the importance of constantly looking out for new products and services that you can test and add to your affiliate marketing portfolio.

Through such continual testing of different programs you’ll see which ones your audience responds to the most and which ones convert the best. This will increase your overall conversions and sales.

And when you begin to make a consistent amount of sales with an affiliate program, don’t hesitate to negotiate higher payouts with them. Many affiliate managers are quite willing to grant productive affiliates higher commissions.

#53: Promote higher priced and recurring commission products

When you master the trade, consider promoting higher priced products to get higher commissions. Also aim for products that renew monthly to receive recurring monthly commissions. A monthly recurring affiliate sales makes the income in your affiliate business more predictable and stable.

#54: Ads and other creative to use

Some affiliate programs provide you with a handful of ads and other creative to use on your site, on social media, and via email. You may also consider creating your own ads (before you do that, check if the merchant allows it).

Some programs offer much more flexibility in the types of ad units supplied, as well as colors and design so it fits snugly on your site’s layout.

When you get them, test different ad creative to see which ones work best in your case.

Also, try different ads, change their placements often, and use different graphics and text to see which ones are the most effective for you.

It may take some time before you figure out the best formula.

Check integrate systematic ad testing into your strategy to maximize your profits.

#55: Commission amount

While your commission rate is fixed, the amount you receive of course depends on the volume of sales. Yet, high volume of sales might not necessarily bring you maximum commission. Most of the successful affiliate marketers go for programs like Wealthy Affiliate that offer initial commission on each signup plus recurring commission on monthly and yearly basis.

  • Save

#56: Be honest with your audience to build trust

Newbie affiliate marketers especially often commit the blunder of exaggerating the merits of the product they promote or even sprinkle the information with deceptive details with the view to making a quick sale.

Keep in mind that purchasers are smart and savvy. Sooner or later they will see through your ruse and abandon you. You may never have the opportunity to make good again. Because, on line, your reputation, good or bad, spreads like wildfire. And, in life, first impression counts.

And usually you don’t get a second chance to make things right.

Instead, if the product you are promoting has some defaults, don’t be afraid to point them out! When you give the cons of a product, it proves to your audience that you are being completely honest with them.

Also, very importantly, be transparent with your customers by disclosing any affiliate relationships you have with the merchants you are promoting. Most people are perfectly alright with that. Besides, the transparency you are displaying can bond you more with your audience.

It is now even legally required that you disclose your affiliate relationship, so any time you share an affiliate link you need to let your audience know.

Readers can recognize an affiliate link long before they even scroll to it. So if you splash your content with too many ads, or if you break your readers’ trust by promoting a product you yourself haven’t used or even don’t believe in, either they will scroll past them or leave and never come back.

So make sure you are following the latest FTC guidelines here.

Readers shunning you is a sure ingredient for resounding failure. It is your repeat visitors that will swell your traffic and spread the word about your site.

Know that if your visitors sense you’re not being honest or even have an inkling that you are recommending products and services just to sell and make profits, they will discontinue reading what you have to say.

Besides, if you promote products and services that aren’t high value, your followers will find out in using them. Dissatisfaction will make them lose trust in your recommendations. This will cost you future sales and profits.

Therefore your objective should always be to only share products that you know are relevant, useful, and can truly help your readers and add value to your website.

Do that and see yourself making much more money in your affiliate career with repeat sales.

#57: Offer bonuses or other incentives as your USP*

*USP means Unique Selling Proposition.

Being transparent about your affiliate relationships may not be enough to enable you make money with affiliate marketing.  You may have to get your readers to take action on your call to action if you offer a bonus or some other type of incentive.

This very effective tactic can dramatically increase the amount of affiliate sales you make in addition to making you stand out from the competition.

If you have a substantial list, merchants are often ready to offer you discounts or incentives that you can hand over to your customers.

#58: Make your content captivating

Although you should educate your readers, remember to make it entertaining. This is because engaging content results in better sales. So write engaging articles or reviews on a regular basis about your affiliate products. Always remember to share why you personally approve of the product. By enthralling visitors, your content makes them come back for more. And there is this marketing truism that a person needs to see an advert at least seven times before deciding to take an action on it.

#59: How to get clicks on your affiliate links

Having an amazing piece of content doesn’t mean people will automatically click on the affiliate links in them.

You have to do a few things to call attention to your links and make them take action on them.

A. Link placement

If you make the newbie mistake of embedding your affiliate links at the end of your posts, you will rarely get clicks, if any.

This is because people hardly scroll there.

On the other hand, make every other word in your introduction a link, and people will see your content as spammy. See below:

This is a review of the best email marketing using AWeber autoresponder.

The links look out of context and spammy.

Use the factors below to place your links at the appropriate places.

B. Context

Let’s say you were writing a comparison review article on the best MLM companies.

This would make more sense:

This post is going to be a comparison of three of the best MLM companies. They are Mary Kay, Oriflame, and Avon.

C. Callouts

Callouts are buttons, tables, and boxes that are not only eye-catching but also make people want to click on the content.

Here is an example from the Wirecutter, with product links:

#60: How to make sure clicks on your affiliate links convert to sales

In terms of clicks, all that many people are aware of is the affiliate link a visitor clicks on to take them to the product page. But they ignore the second which is the click the purchaser makes in order to buy the product.

The three tactics detailed above show that you can influence the conversion rate (number of clicks you get on your affiliate link). However the merchant is in full control of the checkout, therefore there isn’t anything you can do about their conversion rate.

But you can avoid this problem by looking for merchants with programs that convert well.

Let’s see a few ways to do it:

A. Consult public income reports

Check public income reports in which affiliate marketers publish how much money they’re making from their affiliate deals.

If these people are making so much money from an affiliate program to reveal them publicly, then the chances are good that the product converts very well.

To find these reports, Google for example, “income report amazon affiliate”. It will return blog posts made by affiliate marketers showing the money they have made from Amazon Affiliates.

  • Save

Here is the income reports of an affiliate program I know so well: Wealthy Affiliate.

  • Save

If you click the link, you can go to their websites and check the articles. Profit to also take a look at where their other affiliate incomes come from to find other good products to promote.

B. Ask questions

If an affiliate program looks interesting to you but there isn’t much information available about it, you may sign up and ask questions. Things like what their average conversion rates are, a ballpark figure of their top earners’ monthly commissions, etc.

Then, in consideration of what you want out of your affiliate marketing career, you would find out if the affiliate program is worth your while.

C. Use your intuition

If the two tactics about fail, then go with your gut feeling. That is, should the program or product feel “not that good,” then forget about it.

#61: Strive to be helpful

You have to see your affiliate links and ads not as an end in themselves but resources that supplement your content. And just like spices, a little is all you need. Add too much and nobody will like your cooking. So add value to your content by making it helpful, useful, and informative but not heavily laden with affiliate matters.

When I first started in affiliate marketing, I would paste the raw affiliate content supplied by the merchant with affiliate banners and links. When people weren’t clicking them, I thought they weren’t eye-catching enough and added more!

Don’t do like me and put up a multitude of affiliate matters, thinking that is what will make people click them, purchase the product, and make you grin all the way to the bank and loudly whistle an imaginary song all the way back.

When you write anything, your affiliate ads help to point readers to the merchant’s site to find out more.

You can even make them act on your recommendations if you share a personal testimonial or a case study with them.

So don’t just hurl affiliate links and ads at your visitors. They’ll dodge them. The main reason why you created your website is to provide valuable content that adds value to the visitor experience.

Do just that and the sales will invariably follow. For those who give, receive. Because giving, mysteriously, even, mythically, works.

Giving helps others and changes us. It makes us better.

“Simply give others a bit of yourself;
a thoughtful act,
a helpful idea,

a word of appreciation,
a lift over a rough spot,
a sense of understanding,
a timely suggestion…”

#62: Content Comes First

Content is the alpha and omega of your site. So make content marketing strategy your highest priority.

Without valuable and helpful content, Google and the other search engines like Bing and Yahoo! can’t rank your site. Hence you can’t have sufficient readers. Consequently you can’t make money from your ads, be they CPM, CPC, or referral based.

#63: Drive traffic to your affiliate site

You’ve built a nice-looking website. You’ve created great content with affiliate links naturally embedded into it. Now you need to get more people to the website to read your content and click on your affiliate links.

How do you do that?

A. Use paid traffic

Running ads calls for money which may come out of pocket or from your profits. You can pay for traffic using PPC ads.

Paid traffic starts coming to your site immediately you pay for it. And it ceases once you stop paying for ads.

Use ads if you are part of a high-paying affiliate program and can make the numbers work. But you may forget it if you’re new to paid marketing and have no marketing budget, or, if you are promoting low-paying commission programs like Amazon Associates.

B. Get organic traffic with Search engine optimization (SEO)

SEO consists in optimizing pages to rank high in search engines like Google.

Once you can do that for your target keywords, consistent and passive traffic will be yours.

What is SEO?

On the most basic level, it is about:

  • Finding the keywords your target customers are using for search
  • Creating content (blog posts, product pages, etc.) around those topic ideas
  • Doing the “technical” stuff (including link building) to push these pages higher in the search engines results pages

#64: Use content writing to drive traffic

When you first begin, you would be better off concentrating your efforts on SEO (content writing). Just focus on getting traffic and forget the other stuffs for the moment.

See Neil Patel’s The Ultimate Guide to Writing Blog Posts That Rank in Google’s Top 10

#65: Concentrate on building your website

For the moment your website can do without accounts on Instagram, Facebook (Page) and Twitter. Simply focus your attention on building it out.

#66: Traffic is a long-term game

Traffic is what you need most yet it takes time to build. As someone said, everything takes its own time to be accomplished. No matter how ardently you desire to have a child, in the best of cases, it would take you 9 months to have one (or twins, triplets, quadruplets, quintuplets, etc.). Unlike a baby, there are things you can do to get traffic and more of it.

#67: The more you post the more traffic you get

Once a woman gets pregnant, if it’s one child, two or three children she has in her stomach, no amount of lovemaking during the 9-month gestation period can increase that. Fortunately that’s not the case with traffic. The first post can bring you 10 people a day. The next one could be what takes you from those 10 visitors to 100 people a day. And so on up to 500 or best 1200 visitors a day when you begin to make sales.

#68: Not all posts will get you traffic

All posts are created for traffic but not all posts will bring you the same amount of traffic. The 80/20 rule* applies here. Some of your content will result in a surge of traffic, others will drive little traffic and more others will bring zero traffic.

That’s the reality of blogging. You have to deal with it.

*The Pareto principle states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. Management consultant Joseph M. Juran suggested the principle and named it after Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto, who noted the 80/20 connection while at the University of Lausanne in 1896. Wikipedia

#69: Traffic is a numbers game

You remember we told you in point #65 above to keep working on your website? Yes, there’s no other way out. After a while, you will start learning what works for you and what doesn’t thanks to some key data points. (More on this in points #76 and #77 below)

#70: You need a content plan

Benjamin Franklin’s “By failing to prepare, you’re preparing to fail” applies here too. That’s why you must create a content plan. Ideally, you would post once a day, or 5 days a week. The barest minimum when you begin to get good traffic is one post per week.

#71: Success is a numbers game

It’s not for nothing that they say “Content is king”. For the more content you publish, the more traffic you get. The more traffic you get, the higher the number of conversions that you will have. The more conversions you have, the higher your chances of success.

#72: Just keep publishing in your first year

You’ve maybe learnt that refreshing old blog posts can sometimes increase traffic dramatically to your site.

Brian Dean of boosted organic traffic to his site by a whopping 260% simply by updating and relaunching an old post.

(Image source: 17 Actionable Content Marketing Tips for More Traffic)

The tool Brian uses to know which post to work on is the (free) Animalz Revive tool.

While you can also do that, in your first year you would be better off posting content on your website.

The Animalz Revive tool uses your Google Analytics to find pages with the biggest traffic drop. The page must be at least a year old. (Do you see why we told you to wait a whole year before trying to optimize your old blog posts?)

#73: Create great content

The success of your affiliate site depends on creating high-quality content in which your affiliate links fit naturally.

Tim Ferriss interviewed 100+ famous people and asked them this question:

“What purchase of $100 or less has most positively impacted your life in the last six months (or in recent memory)?”

Tim seamlessly integrated his affiliate links into the products mentioned in the answers he put together as a blog post:

  • Save

(Image source: Affiliate Marketing for Beginners: 7 Steps to Success)

This is something you must endeavor to do when creating content for your affiliate site.

#74: Evergreen or timeless content works best

Evergreen content is the one that will last for many years.

While you must ceaselessly publish content, know that not all content works well. This is why you must always aim for evergreen content, but not news-type articles. You can afford to do news later if success is important to you in the beginning.

Content, evergreen or not, gets buried under newer ones and eventually disappears into the depths of your blog library. As it’s no longer visible to be easily consulted, its value may decrease. But do you know that old content may still be valuable?

The content of information evolves constantly, making the old outdated and therefore not useful. That’s why when a visitor falls on an old content of yours (judging by the date), they will click themselves out of your site right away. You can make your content timeless by regularly updating it and adding links.

Constantly updating your older articles will also at worst maintain your search engine rankings and at best improve it.

Some platforms solve this problem to some extent by displaying your “most recent” or “most popular” or “related articles” on every page.

You may also solve it by removing the dates from your blog posts. This is because no matter how still completely relevant your content is, many readers will dismiss it as outdated just because it bears an older date.

Always remember this rule of thumb: for every two pieces of new and updated content, write an evergreen one.

Can’t write?

Don’t worry.

Gary Vaynerchuk puts it, “document, don’t create.” Documenting your experience or something you’ve learned can make interesting reading and attract people who are interested in following your progress.

If you’re outsourcing the content, work with seasoned experts in your niche. They can help you create high-quality, trustworthy work. This can lead to more traffic, engaged visitors, and more affiliate sales.

#75: Get the power of SEO

People go online when looking for information. On-page SEO, keyword research and link building enable the Google bot to find this information and serve it to online searchers.  That’s why you should learn to do the basics of SEO properly to benefit from organic traffic from the search engines.

#76: Use Google Webmaster Tools

Google Search Console is a web service by Google which allows webmasters to check indexing status and optimize visibility of their websites. Until May 20, 2015 the service was called Google Webmaster Tools. In January 2018, Google introduced a new version of the search console, with changes to the user interface. Wikipedia

Check Google Webmaster Tools: An Overview

#77: Use Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a web analytics service offered by Google that tracks and reports website traffic, currently as a platform inside the Google Marketing Platform brand. Google launched the service in November 2005 after acquiring Urchin. Wikipedia

#78: Mind your traffic sources

Your traffic sources may include organic, paid, social media, referral, display, email, or direct traffic. It’s important to know where each is coming from and the demographics of your audience. Thus you can customize your messaging accordingly to provide the best affiliate product recommendations.

  • Save

Google Analytics furnishes you traffic source data such as time on page, bounce rate, geo location, age, gender, time of day, devices (mobile vs. desktop), etc. Checking this will make you focus your effort on the highest converting traffic. From the screenshot below you would agree that this analytics data is crucial to making informed decisions, increasing your conversion rates, and making more affiliate sales.

#79: Constantly test and optimize your conversion rates

Let’s say you have a channel where you’re promoting a product using affiliate links. Supposing you are getting 500 visits/day at a 2% conversion rate, that gives you 10 referrals.

To get to 20 referrals, you have 2 possibilities. Either you focus on getting 500 more visitors or you work to increase the conversion rate to 4%.

Which do you think would be easier to do?

Let’s see.

Building Domain Authority with blogging and guest posts to get more organic traffic will take months. But landing page optimization, testing your calls-to-action, and having a conversion rate optimization strategy can increase the conversion rate by 2% in no time.

Thus testing and optimizing your site will get you far better results with much less effort.

#80: Do you need other tools?

Too much of everything is bad. The problem of newbie affiliate marketers is to collect a large number of tools thinking that is what will bring them success. But it’s the opposite which is observed. The plethora of tools paralyzes them into inaction. For the time being stick to the two tools above (see #76 and #77). They will give you all the data you need to continue moving on the right trajectory.

Most affiliates resort to some common practices to make their audience remain engaged and receptive to purchase the products they promote. Let’s look at the several different marketing channels they may leverage.

#81: Offer engaging reviews

Smart affiliate marketers are always looking for unique opportunities to promote their affiliate links and maximize their earnings.

Scam online is so high that people are wary to buy things on the net. But since they can’t do otherwise, they therefore depend on word-of-mouth and reviews to make a decision.

To help your audience, you should come up with new and interesting ways of reviewing products and services. Make sure to offer them (neutral) reviews before encouraging them to make the purchase. This strategy increases brand awareness, designates you as reliable and thus attracts new customers to your affiliate marketing activities.

Take a look at this guy, who reviews Hot Wheels tracks and cars:

If you like reading, review books:

#82: Product Reviews rank well

If your affiliate marketing blog is not bringing you rankings and commissions, stop writing, or at least, reduce writing the usual affiliate marketing articles. That space is heavily overcrowded. Rather, focus on writing produce and MLM reviews. They bring easy rankings and easy commissions.

If your reviews aren’t genuinely helpful, people will not read them because they will sense that you’re just trying to make a quick buck.

As Pat Flynn points out in his affiliate marketing guide, involved affiliate marketing is the most profitable, because you can relate to the product rather than just promoting something to make a lot of cash.

The question even is: How can you even credibly promote a product you don’t know?

When you write reviews on your blog, link to the products that you promote with your affiliate link.

Actually purchase the products and test them. This strategy actually explains the Wirecutter’s success.

#83: Email Marketing is crucial for your business

Email marketing is a tried-and tested way of marketing products. It is therefore something you should learn and start using in the very beginnings of your affiliate marketing career.

It is possible that there are hundreds of viewers subscribed to your blog. When you manage to build quite a list of engaged subscribers, those will be enough customers for you to earn you a full-time income. Do this now so as that you won’t have to include it later in “32 Things that I Wished I Knew When I Started Affiliate Marketing”.

Since email lists enable you to communicate with your readers whenever you wish, you can use them to send fans new content and keep them coming back for more. This, of course, will lead to more affiliate clicks and sales.

You can even let your lists know of affiliate promotions:

To build an email list, you need to persuade the readers on your site to sign up. That means offering them something valuable in return for their details.

With designrr I create lead magnets as easily as reciting A, B, C.

The latest I’m giving away is that one above. 198 pages long!

Would you like to have it? Go back and click on that link.

But there are plenty of ways to get subscribers. You can also offer a free eBook, a software, an email course, a special review video, etc.

All you need is some creativity.

Here are 3 dummy ways to collect email addresses from your website visitors.

Step 1: Install Hello Bar

This program displays a call to action on the topside of your website where visitors can easily see it.

When they click on the Hello Bar, they are redirected to the page where they can enter their email in exchange for the lead magnet.

An example of a website which has a “subscribe” link on their navigation bar is Gear Patrol:

Step 2: Create Exit Gate

Alternatively you can use Hello Bar to create an exit gate, a popup that will cover the screen when visitors are about to exit your site. It then asks for their details.

You can also use Hello Bar to redirect people to your lead magnet where you can get their email addresses.

Step 3: Use Sidebar Widget

Many blogs have a sidebar. Mine doesn’t.

If yours has one, just place your call to action there.

Ahrefs display a slide-in box at the end of every article:

I use a simple signup form for myfree 198-page eBook on 50 MLM reviews:

When I first started building a list, I thought once subscribers signed up they were mine forever. Then people unsubscribed faster than passengers scrambling off a crash-landed plane.

So, once you have subscribers, just make sure that you keep them engaged, by sending them regular updates, ideally once a week.

Don’t go all “salesy” over them however. That’s another sure way to lose them.

With my blog RSS feed embedded in my AWeber autoresponder account, every single post on my blog is mailed out to my lists.

Every now and then, however, contact your subscribers with a specific call to action to buy a product.

#84: Never ever neglect Video Marketing

Video is the ideal tool for the affiliate marketer in the present socially-connected world. How else can it be when YouTube is the second largest search engine after Google?

Although written reviews allow readers to judge the product for their needs, video reviews furthermore enable the viewer to see the details of the product and check out the features to their satisfaction.

You must therefore make videos and upload them to Youtube, Vimeo and possibly the other video platforms that are better than YouTube.

Optimize your videos for SEO, and include affiliate links in your description.

If you’re inserting affiliate links on YouTube, include the affiliate disclosure in your description:

#85: Use Social Media Marketing

With over 3.8 billion users in 2020, social network is the largest market on earth. Of the biggest ones, Facebook alone has 1.69 billion, followed by LinkedIn 610 million users, Pinterest 335 million users, Twitter 330 million user,  and Instagram 26.9 million.

Individuals, businesses and government organizations all use Facebook and Twitter to broadcast their messages in real-time. Social media channels are ideal for affiliate marketing because they put your products in front of a large number of people. It is thus essential that affiliate marketers work hard to expand their social media footprint so that they could pitch their products to the world!

But beware!

Social media platforms are built primarily for communities and not for doing business although they offer great opportunities to reach your ideal audience. You must therefore take the time to build interactions with people before trying to sell to them. Otherwise you will put them off and that is opportunity lost for you.

Visual platforms like YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest, etc., are especially great for promoting affiliate products, because you can really show your audience features of the product and how it works.

#86: Use live webinars to educate your audience

Let’s say you want to sign up for a keyword research tool. Which of these will be more susceptible to make you do that:

  1. Reading a review of it on a blog
  2. Seeing a live presentation of it in a webinar

The second, of course! And this is what makes webinars so awesome.

A tool like LeadPages or AWeber can help you create a simple landing page where people can sign up for your webinar.

Neil Patel uses Leadpages in this regard. See an example below:

  • Save

(Image source: Affiliate Marketing Made Simple: A Step-by-Step Guide)

He also uses the same tool for his webinars.

To give people enough time to sign up, the same Neil Patel suggests you promote your webinar on social media for a week in advance.

At the stipulated date, all you have to do is host a Google hangout to stream your webinar live to your audience.

During the webinar you can engage with the attendees one on one, present live the keyword tool that you’re promoting and answer any questions from them.

“You can:

  • present the product’s features
  • show different use cases of the product
  • talk about its benefits and drawbacks
  • tell people your personal history with the product
  • help your audience get the most out of it

and much more. ” – Affiliate Marketing Made Simple: A Step-by-Step Guide

Want to learn how to host a webinar with a Google Hangout? It takes less than 10 minutes. See it in this video.

I usually compare the state of mind of people who attend a webinar to that of those who participate in a political rally. They become fired up! Especially after seeing all that your product can make them do.

I’ve often found myself feverishly grabbing the affiliate link the speaker shared at the end of the webinar. This is because it was a soft sell which came naturally since I’ve just been convinced during an hour of great talk about the product.

Anyway I’ve attended webinars where I copied down the link to the product but still did not buy. This shows that you don’t feel forced to buy. And after taking the time to make up my mind, saw that the purchase wasn’t really worth it at the time for reasons such as need or financial.

I love the pro tip given the influencer’s influencer Neil Patel to bore through consumers’ armour of resistance to buy.

It consists in getting your merchant to give you a special deal for your audience. Merchants don’t hesitate to do this since they know you’re going to get their product in front of a couple hundred engaged people. Such discounts or special bundles have incentivized me to buy products that I’m still surprised to discover on my laptop during a search for something else.

#87: Use affiliate marketing influencers

An influencer is a person having the power to motivate the purchasing decisions of a certain group of consumers. Such an individual boasts an impressive following that they can direct to the products being promoted by the affiliate marketer. They do this through social media posts, blog publications, and other interactions with their followers against a share of the sales they helped to generate.

#88: Use email outreach

Learn to properly use email outreach to work with other bloggers and influencers. A tool like ContactOut or Voila Norbert will enable you gather people’s contact information. Then you can send them personalized emails for guest blogging and other affiliate opportunities like joint ventures.

#89: Use paid search focused microsites

An affiliate marketer can develop and monetize microsites to garner sales. The ads are run on an influencer’s site or on the sponsored listings of a search engine.

As sponsored ads, they are distinct and separate from the partner’s main site. Through more focused, relevant content targeted at a specific audience, microsites generate increased conversions by force of their simple and straightforward call to action.

#90: Use large media websites

These websites command a huge amount of traffic, easily an audience in the millions. An affiliate marketer can pass through them to promote products to their massive audience using banners and contextual affiliate links. By offering superior exposure, they improve conversion rates which produce handsome revenues for the affiliate.

I think this is what Neil Patel calls digital billboards.

#91: It takes time to make money

I know it’s no comfort asking people in a famine to wait for food to arrive. But the truth is that even relief food items need time to arrive where they are needed. Worse, it will need the rainy season, planting, a growth period, and harvesting for food to be ready. Even preparing it takes some time. You’re not going to eat sand or raw food because of famine. So, let me give you newbie affiliate marketer just a friendly reminder: making money won’t happen overnight, nor next week, nor even next month for that matter. Give it time just as you would food in a famine case. But this is not an invitation to rest on your laurels. Work, but be patient.

#92: What if you made money early?

It may happen that you make money in your first week. That will be an exception, not the rule. In this case count yourself as one of the luckiest affiliate marketers that ever lived. Should you hear of people like these, know that wonders never end. And don’t hope that will be your case.

#93: Go for recurring commissions

Which one would you rather be relishing? $175 one time or $175 over and over again from just one sale? True, $175 one time is good, but getting $175 for many months to come from only one sale is far better.

See how to get recurring commissions.

#94: Promote high ticket items

Many affiliate marketers promote products or services which offer low commissions like $10 because they think there is a large market for such low-cost products. While it is true that it takes much more effort to sell a product paying $1000 in commission as compared to a $10 one, know that it does not take 100x more effort.

See Highest Paying Affiliate Programs.

Need to earn big commissions?

Refer visitors to BigCommerce and earn 200% of the customer’s first monthly payment or $1,500 per enterprise customer.

#95: Join the right affiliate program

There are simply too many affiliate programs to even attempt to list all of them here. Remember, we told you if you’re in a rush to make money you’ll fall into the trap of scammers? So take your time and pick the right affiliate program. That is, one which is legit and trustworthy. You do not want to go chasing people for money you’ve worked so hard to earn. Or worse, lose your money even before you start.

Reviews and ratings will help you choose.

#96: Promote products from many different merchants

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

This phrase was coined years ago. If it has withstood the test of time and will continue to do so for time immemorial, it is because there is general truth in it. It is good to start with one affiliate program but you must not stick to it only. After you master one program, add another merchant in your niche. This will not only bring you more money but also secure your financial future.

#97: Your insurance is in diversification

Another good reason why you must not stick to just one affiliate program is that if it closes down or changes its policies which don’t favour affiliates, you’re done. Don’t count on the company’s reputation, financial solidity, number of years in business, and great products or services. Although important, they are not enough.

Where are these great defunct companies inthe USA today?

#98: Diversification ensures multiple incomes streams

Building multiple sources of affiliate commissions is the surest way to survive in the affiliate marketing business for the long term. Should one source dry up, you have the others to shore you up.

#99: Blog to increase conversions

Publishing content that can rank organically in search engine queries, blogging enables the affiliate marketer to increase conversions. The blogger purchases the product or service, uses it and then writes a comprehensive review about it. This effectively promotes the brand, driving traffic to the vendor’s site.

See how to get rankings through a search engine using content marketing on a blog.

#100: How much money can you make as an affiliate marketer?

This depends on your niche, your experience, your contacts, and the amount of work you put into your affiliate business.

Newbie affiliate marketers make nothing to a few dollars. Receiving checks like this would not be uncommon:

  • Save

(Image source: Affiliate Marketing for Beginners: 7 Steps to Success)

This shouldn’t discourage you. The longest journey always begins with a single step. While you won’t earn the big bucks right off the bat, it may come one day.

Although they also started small earning similar micro-checks, the most successful affiliate marketers now make six or seven figures a month.

These successes show you that with hard work, time, and the right knowledge, you too can potentially make it to those enviable levels.

Let’s see some examples.

In December 2017, Pat Flynn from Smart Passive Income made over $105,000 in affiliate commissions.

  • Save

(Image source: Affiliate Marketing for Beginners: 7 Steps to Success)

Here are others:

In October 2019, Ryan Robinson, another affiliate marketer, reported over $19,000 in affiliate revenue.

A successful affiliate website—The Wirecutter—made an estimated $10 million in revenue, and got eventually sold to the New York Times for $30 million.

By now you know that it didn’t take these people overnight to make these figures. They have done an excellent preliminary job, years of hard work to build their brands.

How much money can you make as an affiliate marketer?

Affiliate income fluctuates. An affiliate marketer can make anything from $5 in commissions each month to millions of them. On an annual basis, a regular affiliate marketer can make anywhere from $10,000 a year to $400,000. A super affiliate can make upwards of $1,500,000 a year.

They are generally webmasters or bloggers.

#101: How to increase your affiliate marketing income

At a point in your affiliate marketing career you’d find that you just can’t seem to earn any more. In this circumstance, use the following five strategies to grow your earnings:

Ask for a higher commission

The affiliate commission is usually a fixed percentage of the product’s sales price. However, if you are making good sales and you ask, the affiliate manager will willingly increase your commission. This is because they wouldn’t want to lose a valued sales source. Before that, try to build a relationship with your affiliate manager.

Optimise your site

1) Analyze all of your website data through behavior reports and Google Search Console traffic data; 2) Conduct thorough keyword research using Ubersuggest to help you find long-tail keywords that fit with your prospective customers’ user intent; 3) Produce long and value-rich content which should go beyond the ideal length for a blog post of 1,600 words; 4) Optimize for On-page SEO with headlines, sub headlines, URL slugs, and meta tags; 5) Optimize for off-page SEO by optimizing your website via external means such as guest blogging, social media activity, influencer marketing, and brand mentions: 6) Optimize the website for mobile as Google has launched the mobile-first index, which means you might rank better if you focus on mobile friendliness; 7) Page speed matters so use Google’s PageSpeed Insights for valuable insight into how fast your site loads across all devices and what specific things you can fix to make your site faster; and 8) Get quality backlinks which are a prime factor in helping your website rank better.

Test your site

Test headlines, calls to action, button colors and the timing of any pop-ups. Even a small improvement in conversions can result in a significant increase in income.

Offer a promotion

Offer free training, guides, coaching, or consulting to convince buyers to click on your affiliate links and buy the product you’re promoting.

Check your commission rates

Many products are offered on more than one affiliate network. Find all the programs the product is on and check the commission rates offered. Go for the network offering the highest commission. Test to see which of them sells best before changing the products.

#102: Original content will build your reputation

I was reading 7 Ways to Maximize the Viral Potential of Your Content Marketing Efforts the other day and one of the strategies they mentioned is “Do something unique”. When you endeavor to be original and give readers YOUR take, not what you heard or read somewhere from another “influencer”, you will begin to build your reputation as an expert.

#103: Don’t wait to become an expert, authority or influencer

Do you see even how unnecessary that title is? Whoever waits to become something can never become it. That’s what Wayne Gretzky meant when he said, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”.

An expert is made, not wished or decreed. All the influencers you see around did not begin as such. They began small—maybe even lower than you—and worked hard to achieve that status. So start with what you have. Eventually you will start making money and one day the world will see you as an authority.

#104: Do people working from home pay taxes?

Yes, they do. And you too will have to pay taxes on your affiliate income. So carefully note down all your income and expenses and keep all your receipts. They can also help you get business-related tax reliefs.

#105: Is tracking necessary?

Yes. You must track your goals, traffic, sales, etc. But just don’t let it bog you down. Instead use these data to chart the future. Later, when you begin to make money, you may even outsource these activities and concentrate on your core business.

#106: Value of tracking

Whatever you track can be managed. And through managing you can expand them. It is thus you can track goals, traffic, conversions, sales, etc. and manage and expand them.

#107: Build other websites

Once you start making money, don’t hesitate to start a new website. Just like everything affiliate marketing, don’t rush it. Wait till your first site is strong enough, then go for it.

Affiliate marketing is part of the broad Make Money Online niche. Just Google “Profitable niches in making money online niche” and you’ll find areas where you can work profitably.

#108: Apply what you’ve learnt to other niches

What you’ve learnt in affiliate marketing can be extended to other types of online businesses. So to scale your affiliate marketing business, keep doing, or even improve what has worked for you and discard the rest. Finally you’ll have such a hold on it that venturing into other businesses will seem like a breeze.

#109: Purchase an affiliate website

Did you know that it’s easier to buy an affiliate website than it is to build one?

Wealthy Affiliate members can use the Jaaxy research tool to find domains to buy.

In effect, anytime you carry out a research, the tool automatically reveals available domains linked to that search term.

All you have to do is check the domains and buy the ones you like.

#110: What to know when purchasing an affiliate website

An affiliate website is usually affiliated with various networks and programs. You will need to find out what these are.

For buying a run-of-the-mill affiliate website that will bring you only a few sales isn’t worth it. However owning a well-established website with a high level of authority will serve your interests.

If an individual is the face of the website, find out if you can replicate them.

Find out if the seller is a ‘super affiliate’ of some affiliate programs. Such affiliates usually receive a higher commission from a sale. Make sure the person you’re buying the website from can transfer these extraordinary arrangements to you.

Authority is built via strong social media presence, epic content, and unique videos. The higher the authority a site has, the more valuable it will be to you. Can this authority be transferred to you?

A website for sale is listed in a marketplace that brings buyers and sellers together. But occasionally, you may offer to buy a site that someone hasn’t indicated to sell.

If the site you want to buy is making affiliate sales, it could well belong to a number of affiliate websites and also have hundreds, if not thousands of affiliate links. Find out the income that the links generate. The more information you can get on link clicks, conversions, affiliate networks and other products you can be an affiliate for, the better.

#111: Different types of website buyer persona

Here, we are going to see 5 website buyer persona.

The first one is someone just looking for a regular income. They will usually utilize SEO to gain higher rankings and be satisfied with what comes in.

The second just wants to have an income from a variety of sources, and an affiliate marketing website may be one of them. For them, buying websites in various niches is a means to hedge their bets so that if one revenue stream has a bad month or even dries up completely, they have the others still continuing to generate income for them.

The third love working on and enhancing affiliate websites. They will purchase a website and work to increase its overall authority as the income continues to roll in.

The fourth are some personalities and brands that will purchase websites for strategic reasons. Perhaps already successful, they acquire an affiliate website just to confirm their standing in the industry. Such entities may point the new website’s traffic to their main one to increase traffic.

The fifth one makes a living buying and selling websites. As domain flippers, they may buy sites and sell them for profit. Or they may improve the websites before selling them.

#112: Learn to walk before you run

Don’t buy an existing affiliate website when you are beginning your affiliate marketing career. It’s important to know how to build a successful website before you buy one. Then you can use the knowledge gained to run it.

The consumer doesn’t always have to buy the product for the affiliate to get a kickback.

Depending on the program, the affiliate’s contribution to the seller’s business will be assessed differently. The affiliate therefore gets paid in various ways:

#114: Pay per sale

This is the usual affiliate marketing payment structure. In this program, the merchant gives the affiliate a percentage of the sale price of the product after the consumer purchases the product as a result of the affiliate’s marketing strategies.

#115: Pay per lead

Pay per lead affiliate programs compensate the affiliate for the conversion of leads. In effect, the affiliate must persuade the consumer to visit the merchant’s website and complete the desired action such as filling out a contact form, signing up for a trial of a product, subscribing to a newsletter, or downloading software or files.

#116: Pay per click

This program incentivizes the affiliate to redirect consumers from their marketing websites to the merchant’s platform. The affiliate is paid based on the increase in web traffic.

Having seen how affiliate marketers get their payments, let’s have a look at the benefits of affiliate marketing for marketers.

#117: Specialize in your field

As you have a niche (for the market) it goes without saying that you must cultivate an audience that has that very specific interest. That way you tailor your affiliate campaigns to that segment, which increases your chances to convert. Once you’ve established yourself as an expert in one particular area, people most likely to buy your product will be very receptive to your marketing campaign messages.

#118: Make it look personal

Pick and choose products that you personally believe in, so that you can wrap your campaigns around truly valuable products that your customers will enjoy. This will allow you to achieve an impressive conversion rate and establish the trustworthiness of your personal brand.

#119: Use several marketing channels

Don’t stick to just email campaigns, blog postings, and social media campaigns. Look into cross-channel promotions.

Test a number of marketing strategies. You’ll find the ones your audience responds to the most and make frequent use of it.

#120: Carefully choose what to promote

No matter how good your marketing strategies are, it cannot turn a bad product into a valuable one. At best you can fool some of your consumers initially but you can’t do so indefinitely. They’ll find out what you’ve sold to them and would not give you another occasion to sell to them.

This shows how building trust with your customers is of utmost importance. Therefore take care to study a product and make sure there is great demand for it before promoting it. At best, use the product yourself. Research the merchant too before teaming up with them. These ways you will spend your precious time on a product and a seller that are dependable and help you not lose trust with your audience.

#121: How to find out if a product has an affiliate program

You can use two ways to do this:

  1. Check the footer of the product website for the words, affiliates, partners, or XYZ
  2. Do Google search with the words product name + affiliate. If there is one, the search engine result link will lead you to their website or the affiliate network they are associated with.

#122: Give your affiliate marketing business time to mature and grow

Rome was not built in a day. And no matter how urgently you need a baby, it normally takes 9 months to get one. Affiliate revenue also takes time to grow and build up.

With programs that offer lifetime payouts, if you refer a customer, you may continue to make money from them for as long as they continue to buy that product.

With referral links still active in your old posts, they may continue to pay you.

If you find a customer for a recurring billing products, you can earn commissions every month on the same product.

Let’s end this sub-section with a good piece of advice from the in the Top 10 Commandments of Affiliate Marketing: “As you continue to add more content to your website, promote more products, drive more traffic to your website, and build your email marketing list, you’ll continue to grow the affiliate marketing side of your business and make more money.”

#123: Stay relevant to your audience

Keep abreast with the latest offerings of your affiliate programs. Advertising managers are constantly adding new ad units, advertisers, and tools to improve appeal and increase conversions. The small changes made may go a long way in motivating readers to take action. So if you don’t monitor trends, you may be left in the old method which, in some cases, can be very disastrous.

For instance, I was promoting a certain diet product. It was only when I was updating the content that I realized they had left Clickbank and were now somewhere else. Of course, my affiliate link was no longer valid and clicks were returning 404 page not found.

Google doesn’t like anything returning a 404 page as it doesn’t ensure visitors a pleasant experience.

This came about because I had relegated the merchant’s mail in that regard to later and forgot all about it.

Don’t ever do that. Update your post to acknowledge and reflect any changes.

Constantly be on the lookout for new products that are useful and relevant to your audience — the more products you promote and the higher the relevance to your audience, the more money you’ll make.

#124: Stay up to date with trends

We said although there was serious competition in the affiliate marketing sphere, choosing a niche will not let it go away but lessen it. What has become an overcrowded market today was once a niche which made affiliates good money. So you’ll want to stay on top of any new trends in your chosen niche to ensure you remain competitive. This way, you’ll benefit from the new marketing techniques that are constantly cropping up. Then your conversion rates and consequently revenue will keep on increasing.

Having seen the extra tips to help you become a successful affiliate marketer, let’s now look at the best affiliate marketing trends to follow this year (2020).

#125: Be in constant contact with your audience

Add a contact page on your website by which your visitors can get in touch with you concerning anything they wish to share with you. Respond to comments in the comments section of your blog or on your social media posts. The more you communicate with your audience, the more you will be in their minds and the more they will come to know, like, and trust you. And you’ll be able to make more sales!

Are you looking for a way to build a successful home business without any fuss, just your very own step by step instructions? Check out our number one recommendation for more info on how to do this. And you can start today for free!

#126: Affiliate marketing is free and easy to join

You do not need to have a business training or marketing experience to join the great majority of affiliate marketing programs. You don’t have to take out your credit card either to become an affiliate of a network. All you have to do to sign up for an affiliate program and start promoting the products and services is to fill up a simple form in a couple of minutes.

#127: Affiliate marketing needs no financial outlay

In many affiliate marketing cases, the affiliate marketer does not have to invest a single cent in the merchant’s business. The merchant takes care of that themselves. The affiliate’s expenditure is only in marketing the products or services.

#128: Easy marketing management

In the majority of affiliate marketing programs, the affiliate marketer does not have to write product reviews, write email swipes, design banners or create links. All the marketing material is provided by the merchant for the affiliate to use on their marketing channels. Since you do not have to handle orders, ship any inventory, or deal with the customer, you only focus on promoting the offers to your audience.

#129: The affiliate marketer works from home

You work from the comfort of your own home, and in your pajamas, if you wish. The affiliate marketer does not have to wake up at an ungodly hour, put on work clothes, drive to the office through streets jammed with other commuters and slog through monotonous tasks from 9 am until the sweet release at five o’clock.

#130: Affiliate marketing is cost-effective

The affiliate marketer does not need startup costs as well as a cash flow to finance the products being sold. You can do it at a low cost.

#131: The affiliate marketer’s job is only to generate sales

The affiliate does also not need to source products, take orders, hold inventory, draw up invoices, take care of packaging, handle shipping, or even deal with the end customer in matters like after-sales service and refunds. All the affiliate marketer has to do is focus on marketing to get the offers in front of the right audience.

#132: The affiliate marketer does not have to offer customer support

Thanks to the affiliate marketing structure setup, you won’t ever have to be concerned with customer support or customer satisfaction. Any problems regarding product purchases will be directed to the seller’s customer support team to deal with. After you generate the sales, the seller deals with any consumer complaints.

#133: You work anywhere there is internet connection

Affiliate marketers love the idea of working and generating an income from anywhere in the world on a computer. The affiliate is like a virtual assistant to whom the various companies have outsourced work.

#134: Affiliate marketing is convenient and flexible

Affiliate networks are reasonably lenient with their terms and services. This enables the affiliate marketer to be flexible with their marketing tactics.

Should you be banned from one program, you can simply sign up to another offering the same or a similar product.

The affiliate marketer is free to set their own goals, select the products they want to promote, and even determine their own working hours.

#135: Affiliate marketing ensures multiple sources of passive income

Affiliate marketing appears attractive to affiliate marketers because of its potential for passive income. If you have the experience and the time, you could promote products and services offered by several affiliate marketing programs and networks and multiply your income by receiving commissions (recurring preferably) for the various sales.

By using SEO to get articles (if they are good) to rank for popular buyer keywords, traffic will flow to your website. People click on your links (if your call to action is attractive) and you earn a commission should they make a purchase from your promoted vendor sites.

You therefore receive money for your work long after you’ve accomplished it. With online marketing campaigns you make money while you sleep.

What can be better than that?

  1. Hi there, This is a very well researched post with a huge amount of information. As it is so very long, many people might get to information overload and lose interest in reading to the end. I would like to suggest that you might think of splitting it into more than one post.

You have very clearly defined the different components that make up affiliate marketing and the different aspects that play an important role. I will explore the extensive list of Affiliate Marketing Networks more as there are many that I am not familiar with.

I love the African proverb, “money is found in the middle of cacti” as that it what hard work and perseverance is all about.

    All the best, Liné

    • Hi Liné,

Thank you for your appreciation of my post. Of course, the length cannot make the article to be read at a sitting. One can bookmark it, read a section and come back later to continue. One piece at a time is the best way to such an article. On the other hand, people might choose to read only the sections which interest them. Splitting it into pieces will rob the piece of my idea to write a pillar piece.

Yes, go ahead and explore the extensive list of Affiliate Marketing Networks more. You may find some to join and make money.

Thanks again for your appreciation of the African proverb.

All the best to you too.

  2. It is so a good article. And I have also something to say: One of the great things about affiliate marketing is that the technology is now able to allow everyone to build their own online business. Anyone can use online platforms and tools to build their own online business. The main thing you need is the desire to learn, also effort and patient. Especially patient is the key to get your dream in. Affiliate marketing isn’t for everyone though. It does take a lot of hard work and it can take years before you are rewarded financially. But Once you got it, you can live a good life.

    • Hi Fabio,

Thanks for your appreciation of my article. I loved what you had to add, especially “The main thing you need is the desire to learn, also effort and patient.” Lack of patience largely accounts for failure in affiliate marketing. Also lack of knowledge which will inform your strategy. I further agree with you that it takes a lot of hard work time  before you see the money. Then the internet lifestyle begins.

  3. Hey nice article you have there. Your thoughts are indeed invaluable. As a newbie in Affiliate marketing, I have been passing through some minor beginners challenge, having read through this article, I have been equip with the basic knowledge to surmount any reoccurring difficulty/challenges, thanks for the enlightenment. Thanks, best Regards.

    • Hey there,
