The merchant

The merchant, also known as the seller, the product creator, the business, the vendor, the brand, the advertiser or the retailer, is an individual or a business that creates a product or a service and offers them to be promoted by an affiliate.

The product can be a physical one, like household goods, or a service, like makeup tutorials.

The network side of the equation is where the promotion happens. An affiliate network promotes one or multiple merchant products and attracts and convinces potential affiliates of the value of the merchant’s product so that they may decide to market it for a commission.

While you could actually promote an online affiliate marketing course someone has created and get a direct revenue share from them, getting a network such as ClickBank or Commission Junction handle the payment and product delivery makes the affiliate marketing business look more serious.

In the second case, the affiliates have to go through an affiliate network to promote the product. This is because the merchant only manages their affiliate program on that network.

For the affiliate also, using the network is interesting as it serves as a database of lots of products, out of which they can choose which to promote.

ClickBank is a notable example of an affiliate network. You can use it to promote digital products, like eBooks, software, etc. Their ClickBank affiliate program lets you promote any of the over 10,000 items available on their platform.

#03: Best affiliate marketing networks or programs to join

There are multitudes of affiliate networks and programs out there. Consider these factors before choosing to join any of them.

Legitimacy

Not all the good programs or networks are popular. If you want to join one that you don’t know very well, consult reviews and ratings to see how legitimate it is.

The niche

Choose programs or categories whose products or services have a high demand and that you are passionate about promoting.

The commission rate

If you want to make more money, you could promote products with low commission but high demand or high commission items for which you can generate sales. In the latter, even a few sales will make you nice commissions.

Payment methods

Not all affiliate programs use the same methods to pay out. Therefore before joining any, check to be sure that the payment methods used are available in your country. I have had to miss out on promoting some interesting programs because they pay out only by Paypal.

While people in all Africans countries (I think) can send money through this processor, only a couple can receive money through it.

I have asked Paypal about this twice, and each time they cited local regulations and the like, which I find strange. Local regulations generally prevent money from going out (because of foreign exchange restrictions) and not coming in (which is good for the economy)!

Limitations

Some programs are limited to specific countries. For example, for sometime, free Starter Membership was NOT available at Wealthy Affiliate in Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Kenya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, and Vietnam. So much so that I named my first blog it-is-easy-to-make-money-at-home. But should you still be entertaining this idea, I will entreat you not to continue reading this post, especially if you’re not ready to let go of it. It will be a massive waste of your time.

#6: Affiliate marketing demands work

Since affiliate marketing is not easy, this means that it requires a lot of work on your part. You must endeavor to learn the best strategies from the successful affiliate marketers (Resources at the end) and apply them to your own business. Do not look for any rest until success comes. You must work so hard in the beginning that at the end you can relax and enjoy passive income. This is the money that falls into your account even when you’re sleeping. This means the “work on the beach” life is for the seasoned affiliate marketer but not the beginner.

#7: Affiliate marketing has a 96% failure rate from the beginning

The fact that 96% of affiliates never make any money go to prove point N° 1 above that affiliate marketing is not easy money. It’s so hard that only 4% of those who start it go somewhere past the first 3 months.

This is when 10% of those who went beyond the 3 months critical period further drop out from lack of patience.

#9: Competition is high in affiliate marketing

The low entry barrier and the high profit margins make affiliate marketing the most popular online marketing system. As it attracts a large number of affiliates to create new businesses, we end up with many fighting for the attention of almost the same consumers (people online). This is what makes competition very high and prevent new businesses from growing.

#10: How to mitigate affiliate marketing competition

Is it all lost then?

No. To mitigate the competition and succeed, you must differentiate yourself from the hundreds and thousands of affiliates marketing the same product. This is done through offering bonus items, training videos, creating better content or even giving cash back.

Some affiliate programs put a cap on how many sales you can make a month. This is mainly the case in lead generation campaigns but they are not so commonly used these days. So if there’s a maximum of 10 sales a month each affiliate can earn commission on, and you generate 100 sales in a month, you are paid for only 10 sales.

#17: The affiliate marketer is dependent on the affiliate network

If there were no merchants, affiliate programs or affiliate networks, it would be difficult, if not outright impossible, to become an affiliate marketer. As a marketer, the affiliate counts on the merchant for marketing tools like banners and links. And the affiliate remains in business as long as the merchant does. Should the merchant stop running the business or their program, the affiliate marketer simply loses that source of income.

That’s why you must not put all your eggs in one basket by relying on a single affiliate program for your affiliate revenue source!

#18: The affiliate marketer’s final conversion rate depends on the merchant’s

As an affiliate, your only main work is to generate leads. That’s why the affiliate network gives you affiliate links. Once someone clicks on those on your site or elsewhere like social media, the link takes them to the merchant’s site. This platform must be optimized for you to make sales. Otherwise you will drive hundreds of leads but will make little to no cash.

Not at all. In a pyramid scheme there’s no product to promote. You only make money recruiting people for the program. Thus a store, named X Inc. that sells electronic gadgets in the US through various channels (online and traditional stores) and thinks that the current customer base is not sufficient for its business targets, may want to increase access to new markets and to a new customer base through affiliate marketing.

X Inc. then starts a partnership program alone or with a network wherein they commit to paying a commission for sales made by affiliates who join the program.

These affiliates (e.g. bloggers and other digital marketing professionals) set up marketing campaigns to sell the products of X Inc. to their customers through their websites and/or other sources like social media platforms. X Inc. or the network then pays out the commission when a sale is made.

#21: What happens when a customer clicks on an affiliate link?

When an affiliate marketer signs up with an affiliate marketing program or network, they receive a unique link. This enables the merchant track the affiliate responsible for a sale.

Below is how the link will usually look like:

When a potential customer clicks that link, a snippet of code called a cookie will be stored on their device.

The affiliate cookie (usually) holds an expiration date, so you get paid when the buyer makes the purchase recommended as well as others within that time period.

So when a reader visits my Wealthy Affiliate Review and clicks on an affiliate link, this leads them to the Wealthy Affiliate site. (If the link was a product on Clickbank, for instance, it will lead the reader to the product page on Clickbank).

I get paid commissions for the three purchases.

What happened was that when they clicked on my affiliate link, a cookie was stored on their device. Because of that, I got compensated for the Wealthy Affiliate and Jaaxy subscriptions as well as for the domain purchase, even though I didn’t promote the last two.

Knowing your audience can let you have better success with the products you are promoting. It can also help you know the best places to market, advertise, and promote your website to attract visitors.

So while looking for a niche, make sure that there are search terms people are using when looking for your niche information so that you can feature among the top 10 search engine results pages.

The only means for you to stand the best chance of success is to niche down.

You must focus on a specific category. “Food” is an enormous category but “grilling food” is small enough to handle.

Such tight topics can help you build a more focused audience and potentially help you rank higher in search engines.

See how Si Quan Ong did this when he built his first site limiting himself to just breakdancing instead of talking about “dance” or “hip hop”. He claimed he didn’t know anything about SEO back then, but he managed to rank for a few key terms and generate ~3,000 organic visits per month.

#32: It is importance to choose the right niche

The details in #30 above show that there are many niches for you to pick from. Taking the one you are passionate about is the best niche for you. Even if you work for months without seeing any results, it will keep you going because of your strong enthusiasm for it.

#33: There are consequences for choosing the wrong niche

If you follow the above steps, it is likely that you will choose the right niche. But should you pick the wrong one, you could do everything right for 12 months (the long-range goal mentioned in #12 above) and still have nothing to show for it.

#40: A simple website will do

If you think you need a flashy website in order to be noticed among the millions out there, then think again. Your website does not in the least need to be fancy. Any theme that has a white background, black text and a clean look will do just fine.

Just have a look at my homepage. It’s so simple no visitor is going to be distracted by anything. People can easily get what I want them to find on my site.

#41: Should you use free or premium themes to build your website?

I created my first blog on the free blogger.com platform and my second on a free WordPress one. Thinking a premium one would serve me better, I purchased one and found myself with a complicated theme. Now I’ve gone back to a free WordPress theme. Check it here if you haven’t yet done it above. You can go for premium themes when you start making $1000s a day. Till then, stick to the free ones.

#42: Get your domain

Free or premium theme, you need a domain. This is your website URL without the https://www. Get one here or there.

The best way is to take your best keyword term and register it as a .com name.

For our example, the domain name could be StartAffiliateMarketing.com or Start-Affiliate-Marketing.com

If you check with your domain name registrar and your chosen domain name is taken, you may add stop words (by, the, do, go, etc.) which search engines do not recognize.

Your new domain name may then be startaffiliatemarketinggo.com or startaffiliatemarketinggo.net

The search engines still consider these domain names as still startaffiliatemarketing because they do not see the stop word “go”.

This can be done at a company that will rent you space on their server where you’ll build your site, keep your files and display your site’s contents to the world via the net.

Plugins are snippets of code that extend the functionality of your basic WordPress theme. You can use them to add social media buttons to your site, to optimize images for speed, to keep off spam comments, and many other things.

As you can see plugins are great, but only use the strict minimum for your needs. Anything more than 5-10 plugins on a basic hosting plan will slow down your site and increase your bounce rate (the number of visitors who leave because they can’t wait all that long for your site to load).

#45: Your site’s loading speed is the Archbishop

If content is king, then your site’s loading speed is the Archbishop. For it’s the archbishop who crowns the king.

If your site’s loading speed is slow, Google will downgrade it in the ranks, so it will be hard for people to find your content. And even if they manage to find it, the loading speed will send them away before they could even read it.

Constantly monitor your site’s loading speed and keep it under 1-2 seconds. Anything over 2-3 seconds will make you lose visitors.

Google even takes your page loading speed into consideration to rank it.

#46: Check mobile readiness of your site

Even if your site looks great, do yourself the favour of going through it on mobile. Spend some time reading it. You will find a quite a number of things to fix.

Broadly, there are three types of affiliate programs to become a member of.

They are:

Readers shunning you is a sure ingredient for resounding failure. It is your repeat visitors that will swell your traffic and spread the word about your site.

Know that if your visitors sense you’re not being honest or even have an inkling that you are recommending products and services just to sell and make profits, they will discontinue reading what you have to say.

Besides, if you promote products and services that aren’t high value, your followers will find out in using them. Dissatisfaction will make them lose trust in your recommendations. This will cost you future sales and profits.

Therefore your objective should always be to only share products that you know are relevant, useful, and can truly help your readers and add value to your website.

#58: Make your content captivating

Although you should educate your readers, remember to make it entertaining. This is because engaging content results in better sales. So write engaging articles or reviews on a regular basis about your affiliate products. Always remember to share why you personally approve of the product. By enthralling visitors, your content makes them come back for more. And there is this marketing truism that a person needs to see an advert at least seven times before deciding to take an action on it.

#59: How to get clicks on your affiliate links

Having an amazing piece of content doesn’t mean people will automatically click on the affiliate links in them.

You have to do a few things to call attention to your links and make them take action on them.

A. Link placement

If you make the newbie mistake of embedding your affiliate links at the end of your posts, you will rarely get clicks, if any.

This is because people hardly scroll there.

#60: How to make sure clicks on your affiliate links convert to sales

In terms of clicks, all that many people are aware of is the affiliate link a visitor clicks on to take them to the product page. But they ignore the second which is the click the purchaser makes in order to buy the product.

The three tactics detailed above show that you can influence the conversion rate (number of clicks you get on your affiliate link). However the merchant is in full control of the checkout, therefore there isn’t anything you can do about their conversion rate.

But you can avoid this problem by looking for merchants with programs that convert well.

Let’s see a few ways to do it:

A. Consult public income reports

Check public income reports in which affiliate marketers publish how much money they’re making from their affiliate deals.

If these people are making so much money from an affiliate program to reveal them publicly, then the chances are good that the product converts very well.

To find these reports, Google for example, “income report amazon affiliate”. It will return blog posts made by affiliate marketers showing the money they have made from Amazon Affiliates.

B. Ask questions

If an affiliate program looks interesting to you but there isn’t much information available about it, you may sign up and ask questions. Things like what their average conversion rates are, a ballpark figure of their top earners’ monthly commissions, etc.

Then, in consideration of what you want out of your affiliate marketing career, you would find out if the affiliate program is worth your while.

C. Use your intuition

If the two tactics about fail, then go with your gut feeling. That is, should the program or product feel “not that good,” then forget about it.

#61: Strive to be helpful

You have to see your affiliate links and ads not as an end in themselves but resources that supplement your content. And just like spices, a little is all you need. Add too much and nobody will like your cooking. So add value to your content by making it helpful, useful, and informative but not heavily laden with affiliate matters.

When I first started in affiliate marketing, I would paste the raw affiliate content supplied by the merchant with affiliate banners and links. When people weren’t clicking them, I thought they weren’t eye-catching enough and added more!

Ouch!

Don’t do like me and put up a multitude of affiliate matters, thinking that is what will make people click them, purchase the product, and make you grin all the way to the bank and loudly whistle an imaginary song all the way back.

When you write anything, your affiliate ads help to point readers to the merchant’s site to find out more.

You can even make them act on your recommendations if you share a personal testimonial or a case study with them.

So don’t just hurl affiliate links and ads at your visitors. They’ll dodge them. The main reason why you created your website is to provide valuable content that adds value to the visitor experience.

Do just that and the sales will invariably follow. For those who give, receive. Because giving, mysteriously, even, mythically, works.

Content is the alpha and omega of your site. So make content marketing strategy your highest priority.

Without valuable and helpful content, Google and the other search engines like Bing and Yahoo! can’t rank your site. Hence you can’t have sufficient readers. Consequently you can’t make money from your ads, be they CPM, CPC, or referral based.

Use ads if you are part of a high-paying affiliate program and can make the numbers work. But you may forget it if you’re new to paid marketing and have no marketing budget, or, if you are promoting low-paying commission programs like Amazon Associates.

B. Get organic traffic with Search engine optimization (SEO)

SEO consists in optimizing pages to rank high in search engines like Google.

Once you can do that for your target keywords, consistent and passive traffic will be yours.

What is SEO?

On the most basic level, it is about:

  • Finding the keywords your target customers are using for search
  • Creating content (blog posts, product pages, etc.) around those topic ideas
  • Doing the “technical” stuff (including link building) to push these pages higher in the search engines results pages

#64: Use content writing to drive traffic

When you first begin, you would be better off concentrating your efforts on SEO (content writing). Just focus on getting traffic and forget the other stuffs for the moment.

#65: Concentrate on building your website

For the moment your website can do without accounts on Instagram, Facebook (Page) and Twitter. Simply focus your attention on building it out.

#66: Traffic is a long-term game

Traffic is what you need most yet it takes time to build. As someone said, everything takes its own time to be accomplished. No matter how ardently you desire to have a child, in the best of cases, it would take you 9 months to have one (or twins, triplets, quadruplets, quintuplets, etc.). Unlike a baby, there are things you can do to get traffic and more of it.

#67: The more you post the more traffic you get

Once a woman gets pregnant, if it’s one child, two or three children she has in her stomach, no amount of lovemaking during the 9-month gestation period can increase that. Fortunately that’s not the case with traffic. The first post can bring you 10 people a day. The next one could be what takes you from those 10 visitors to 100 people a day. And so on up to 500 or best 1200 visitors a day when you begin to make sales.

#68: Not all posts will get you traffic

All posts are created for traffic but not all posts will bring you the same amount of traffic. The 80/20 rule* applies here. Some of your content will result in a surge of traffic, others will drive little traffic and more others will bring zero traffic.

That’s the reality of blogging. You have to deal with it.

*The Pareto principle states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. Management consultant Joseph M. Juran suggested the principle and named it after Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto, who noted the 80/20 connection while at the University of Lausanne in 1896. Wikipedia

#69: Traffic is a numbers game

You remember we told you in point #65 above to keep working on your website? Yes, there’s no other way out. After a while, you will start learning what works for you and what doesn’t thanks to some key data points. (More on this in points #76 and #77 below)

#70: You need a content plan

Benjamin Franklin’s “By failing to prepare, you’re preparing to fail” applies here too. That’s why you must create a content plan. Ideally, you would post once a day, or 5 days a week. The barest minimum when you begin to get good traffic is one post per week.

#71: Success is a numbers game

It’s not for nothing that they say “Content is king”. For the more content you publish, the more traffic you get. The more traffic you get, the higher the number of conversions that you will have. The more conversions you have, the higher your chances of success.

#72: Just keep publishing in your first year

You’ve maybe learnt that refreshing old blog posts can sometimes increase traffic dramatically to your site.

Brian Dean of backlinko.com boosted organic traffic to his site by a whopping 260% simply by updating and relaunching an old post.

While you can also do that, in your first year you would be better off posting content on your website.

#73: Create great content

The success of your affiliate site depends on creating high-quality content in which your affiliate links fit naturally.

Tim Ferriss interviewed 100+ famous people and asked them this question:

“What purchase of $100 or less has most positively impacted your life in the last six months (or in recent memory)?”

This is something you must endeavor to do when creating content for your affiliate site.

#74: Evergreen or timeless content works best

Evergreen content is the one that will last for many years.

While you must ceaselessly publish content, know that not all content works well. This is why you must always aim for evergreen content, but not news-type articles. You can afford to do news later if success is important to you in the beginning.

Content, evergreen or not, gets buried under newer ones and eventually disappears into the depths of your blog library. As it’s no longer visible to be easily consulted, its value may decrease. But do you know that old content may still be valuable?

The content of information evolves constantly, making the old outdated and therefore not useful. That’s why when a visitor falls on an old content of yours (judging by the date), they will click themselves out of your site right away. You can make your content timeless by regularly updating it and adding links.

Constantly updating your older articles will also at worst maintain your search engine rankings and at best improve it.

Some platforms solve this problem to some extent by displaying your “most recent” or “most popular” or “related articles” on every page.

You may also solve it by removing the dates from your blog posts. This is because no matter how still completely relevant your content is, many readers will dismiss it as outdated just because it bears an older date.

Always remember this rule of thumb: for every two pieces of new and updated content, write an evergreen one.

Can’t write?

Don’t worry.

Gary Vaynerchuk puts it, “document, don’t create.” Documenting your experience or something you’ve learned can make interesting reading and attract people who are interested in following your progress.

If you’re outsourcing the content, work with seasoned experts in your niche. They can help you create high-quality, trustworthy work. This can lead to more traffic, engaged visitors, and more affiliate sales.

#75: Get the power of SEO

People go online when looking for information. On-page SEO, keyword research and link building enable the Google bot to find this information and serve it to online searchers.  That’s why you should learn to do the basics of SEO properly to benefit from organic traffic from the search engines.

#77: Use Google Analytics

#78: Mind your traffic sources

Your traffic sources may include organic, paid, social media, referral, display, email, or direct traffic. It’s important to know where each is coming from and the demographics of your audience. Thus you can customize your messaging accordingly to provide the best affiliate product recommendations.

#79: Constantly test and optimize your conversion rates

Let’s say you have a channel where you’re promoting a product using affiliate links. Supposing you are getting 500 visits/day at a 2% conversion rate, that gives you 10 referrals.

To get to 20 referrals, you have 2 possibilities. Either you focus on getting 500 more visitors or you work to increase the conversion rate to 4%.

Which do you think would be easier to do?

Let’s see.

Building Domain Authority with blogging and guest posts to get more organic traffic will take months. But landing page optimization, testing your calls-to-action, and having a conversion rate optimization strategy can increase the conversion rate by 2% in no time.

Thus testing and optimizing your site will get you far better results with much less effort.

#80: Do you need other tools?

Too much of everything is bad. The problem of newbie affiliate marketers is to collect a large number of tools thinking that is what will bring them success. But it’s the opposite which is observed. The plethora of tools paralyzes them into inaction. For the time being stick to the two tools above (see #76 and #77). They will give you all the data you need to continue moving on the right trajectory.

#81: Offer engaging reviews

Smart affiliate marketers are always looking for unique opportunities to promote their affiliate links and maximize their earnings.

Scam online is so high that people are wary to buy things on the net. But since they can’t do otherwise, they therefore depend on word-of-mouth and reviews to make a decision.

If your affiliate marketing blog is not bringing you rankings and commissions, stop writing, or at least, reduce writing the usual affiliate marketing articles. That space is heavily overcrowded. Rather, focus on writing produce and MLM reviews. They bring easy rankings and easy commissions.

If your reviews aren’t genuinely helpful, people will not read them because they will sense that you’re just trying to make a quick buck.

As Pat Flynn points out in his affiliate marketing guide, involved affiliate marketing is the most profitable, because you can relate to the product rather than just promoting something to make a lot of cash.

The question even is: How can you even credibly promote a product you don’t know?

When you write reviews on your blog, link to the products that you promote with your affiliate link.

Actually purchase the products and test them. This strategy actually explains the Wirecutter’s success.

#83: Email Marketing is crucial for your business

Email marketing is a tried-and tested way of marketing products. It is therefore something you should learn and start using in the very beginnings of your affiliate marketing career.

It is possible that there are hundreds of viewers subscribed to your blog. When you manage to build quite a list of engaged subscribers, those will be enough customers for you to earn you a full-time income. Do this now so as that you won’t have to include it later in “32 Things that I Wished I Knew When I Started Affiliate Marketing”.

Since email lists enable you to communicate with your readers whenever you wish, you can use them to send fans new content and keep them coming back for more. This, of course, will lead to more affiliate clicks and sales.

Many blogs have a sidebar. Mine doesn’t.

I use a simple signup form for myfree 198-page eBook on 50 MLM reviews:

When I first started building a list, I thought once subscribers signed up they were mine forever. Then people unsubscribed faster than passengers scrambling off a crash-landed plane.

So, once you have subscribers, just make sure that you keep them engaged, by sending them regular updates, ideally once a week.

Don’t go all “salesy” over them however. That’s another sure way to lose them.

With my blog RSS feed embedded in my AWeber autoresponder account, every single post on my blog is mailed out to my lists.

Every now and then, however, contact your subscribers with a specific call to action to buy a product.

#84: Never ever neglect Video Marketing

Video is the ideal tool for the affiliate marketer in the present socially-connected world. How else can it be when YouTube is the second largest search engine after Google?

Although written reviews allow readers to judge the product for their needs, video reviews furthermore enable the viewer to see the details of the product and check out the features to their satisfaction.

You must therefore make videos and upload them to Youtube, Vimeo and possibly the other video platforms that are better than YouTube.

Optimize your videos for SEO, and include affiliate links in your description.

#85: Use Social Media Marketing

With over 3.8 billion users in 2020, social network is the largest market on earth. Of the biggest ones, Facebook alone has 1.69 billion, followed by LinkedIn 610 million users, Pinterest 335 million users, Twitter 330 million user,  and Instagram 26.9 million.

Individuals, businesses and government organizations all use Facebook and Twitter to broadcast their messages in real-time. Social media channels are ideal for affiliate marketing because they put your products in front of a large number of people. It is thus essential that affiliate marketers work hard to expand their social media footprint so that they could pitch their products to the world!

But beware!

Social media platforms are built primarily for communities and not for doing business although they offer great opportunities to reach your ideal audience. You must therefore take the time to build interactions with people before trying to sell to them. Otherwise you will put them off and that is opportunity lost for you.

Visual platforms like YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest, etc., are especially great for promoting affiliate products, because you can really show your audience features of the product and how it works.

#86: Use live webinars to educate your audience

Let’s say you want to sign up for a keyword research tool. Which of these will be more susceptible to make you do that:

  1. Reading a review of it on a blog
  2. Seeing a live presentation of it in a webinar

The second, of course! And this is what makes webinars so awesome.

A tool like LeadPages or AWeber can help you create a simple landing page where people can sign up for your webinar.

I usually compare the state of mind of people who attend a webinar to that of those who participate in a political rally. They become fired up! Especially after seeing all that your product can make them do.

I’ve often found myself feverishly grabbing the affiliate link the speaker shared at the end of the webinar. This is because it was a soft sell which came naturally since I’ve just been convinced during an hour of great talk about the product.

Anyway I’ve attended webinars where I copied down the link to the product but still did not buy. This shows that you don’t feel forced to buy. And after taking the time to make up my mind, saw that the purchase wasn’t really worth it at the time for reasons such as need or financial.

I love the pro tip given the influencer’s influencer Neil Patel to bore through consumers’ armour of resistance to buy.

It consists in getting your merchant to give you a special deal for your audience. Merchants don’t hesitate to do this since they know you’re going to get their product in front of a couple hundred engaged people. Such discounts or special bundles have incentivized me to buy products that I’m still surprised to discover on my laptop during a search for something else.

#87: Use affiliate marketing influencers

An influencer is a person having the power to motivate the purchasing decisions of a certain group of consumers. Such an individual boasts an impressive following that they can direct to the products being promoted by the affiliate marketer. They do this through social media posts, blog publications, and other interactions with their followers against a share of the sales they helped to generate.

#88: Use email outreach

Learn to properly use email outreach to work with other bloggers and influencers. A tool like ContactOut or Voila Norbert will enable you gather people’s contact information. Then you can send them personalized emails for guest blogging and other affiliate opportunities like joint ventures.

#89: Use paid search focused microsites

An affiliate marketer can develop and monetize microsites to garner sales. The ads are run on an influencer’s site or on the sponsored listings of a search engine.

As sponsored ads, they are distinct and separate from the partner’s main site. Through more focused, relevant content targeted at a specific audience, microsites generate increased conversions by force of their simple and straightforward call to action.

#90: Use large media websites

These websites command a huge amount of traffic, easily an audience in the millions. An affiliate marketer can pass through them to promote products to their massive audience using banners and contextual affiliate links. By offering superior exposure, they improve conversion rates which produce handsome revenues for the affiliate.

I think this is what Neil Patel calls digital billboards.

#91: It takes time to make money

I know it’s no comfort asking people in a famine to wait for food to arrive. But the truth is that even relief food items need time to arrive where they are needed. Worse, it will need the rainy season, planting, a growth period, and harvesting for food to be ready. Even preparing it takes some time. You’re not going to eat sand or raw food because of famine. So, let me give you newbie affiliate marketer just a friendly reminder: making money won’t happen overnight, nor next week, nor even next month for that matter. Give it time just as you would food in a famine case. But this is not an invitation to rest on your laurels. Work, but be patient.

#92: What if you made money early?

It may happen that you make money in your first week. That will be an exception, not the rule. In this case count yourself as one of the luckiest affiliate marketers that ever lived. Should you hear of people like these, know that wonders never end. And don’t hope that will be your case.

#93: Go for recurring commissions

Which one would you rather be relishing? $175 one time or $175 over and over again from just one sale? True, $175 one time is good, but getting $175 for many months to come from only one sale is far better.

#94: Promote high ticket items

Many affiliate marketers promote products or services which offer low commissions like $10 because they think there is a large market for such low-cost products. While it is true that it takes much more effort to sell a product paying $1000 in commission as compared to a $10 one, know that it does not take 100x more effort.

Need to earn big commissions?

Refer visitors to BigCommerce and earn 200% of the customer’s first monthly payment or $1,500 per enterprise customer.

#95: Join the right affiliate program

There are simply too many affiliate programs to even attempt to list all of them here. Remember, we told you if you’re in a rush to make money you’ll fall into the trap of scammers? So take your time and pick the right affiliate program. That is, one which is legit and trustworthy. You do not want to go chasing people for money you’ve worked so hard to earn. Or worse, lose your money even before you start.

Reviews and ratings will help you choose.

#96: Promote products from many different merchants

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

This phrase was coined years ago. If it has withstood the test of time and will continue to do so for time immemorial, it is because there is general truth in it. It is good to start with one affiliate program but you must not stick to it only. After you master one program, add another merchant in your niche. This will not only bring you more money but also secure your financial future.

#97: Your insurance is in diversification

Another good reason why you must not stick to just one affiliate program is that if it closes down or changes its policies which don’t favour affiliates, you’re done. Don’t count on the company’s reputation, financial solidity, number of years in business, and great products or services. Although important, they are not enough.

#98: Diversification ensures multiple incomes streams

Building multiple sources of affiliate commissions is the surest way to survive in the affiliate marketing business for the long term. Should one source dry up, you have the others to shore you up.

#99: Blog to increase conversions

Publishing content that can rank organically in search engine queries, blogging enables the affiliate marketer to increase conversions. The blogger purchases the product or service, uses it and then writes a comprehensive review about it. This effectively promotes the brand, driving traffic to the vendor’s site.

#100: How much money can you make as an affiliate marketer?

This depends on your niche, your experience, your contacts, and the amount of work you put into your affiliate business.

Newbie affiliate marketers make nothing to a few dollars. Receiving checks like this would not be uncommon:

This shouldn’t discourage you. The longest journey always begins with a single step. While you won’t earn the big bucks right off the bat, it may come one day.

Although they also started small earning similar micro-checks, the most successful affiliate marketers now make six or seven figures a month.

These successes show you that with hard work, time, and the right knowledge, you too can potentially make it to those enviable levels.

By now you know that it didn’t take these people overnight to make these figures. They have done an excellent preliminary job, years of hard work to build their brands.

How much money can you make as an affiliate marketer?

Affiliate income fluctuates. An affiliate marketer can make anything from $5 in commissions each month to millions of them. On an annual basis, a regular affiliate marketer can make anywhere from $10,000 a year to $400,000. A super affiliate can make upwards of $1,500,000 a year.

#101: How to increase your affiliate marketing income

At a point in your affiliate marketing career you’d find that you just can’t seem to earn any more. In this circumstance, use the following five strategies to grow your earnings:

Ask for a higher commission

The affiliate commission is usually a fixed percentage of the product’s sales price. However, if you are making good sales and you ask, the affiliate manager will willingly increase your commission. This is because they wouldn’t want to lose a valued sales source. Before that, try to build a relationship with your affiliate manager.

Optimise your site

1) Analyze all of your website data through behavior reports and Google Search Console traffic data; 2) Conduct thorough keyword research using Ubersuggest to help you find long-tail keywords that fit with your prospective customers’ user intent; 3) Produce long and value-rich content which should go beyond the ideal length for a blog post of 1,600 words; 4) Optimize for On-page SEO with headlines, sub headlines, URL slugs, and meta tags; 5) Optimize for off-page SEO by optimizing your website via external means such as guest blogging, social media activity, influencer marketing, and brand mentions: 6) Optimize the website for mobile as Google has launched the mobile-first index, which means you might rank better if you focus on mobile friendliness; 7) Page speed matters so use Google’s PageSpeed Insights for valuable insight into how fast your site loads across all devices and what specific things you can fix to make your site faster; and 8) Get quality backlinks which are a prime factor in helping your website rank better.

Test your site

Test headlines, calls to action, button colors and the timing of any pop-ups. Even a small improvement in conversions can result in a significant increase in income.

Offer a promotion

Offer free training, guides, coaching, or consulting to convince buyers to click on your affiliate links and buy the product you’re promoting.

Check your commission rates

And I have also something to say: One of the great things about affiliate marketing is that the technology is now able to allow everyone to build their own online business. Anyone can use online platforms and tools to build their own online business. The main thing you need is the desire to learn, also effort and patient. Especially patient is the key to get your dream in. Affiliate marketing isn’t for everyone though. It does take a lot of hard work and it can take years before you are rewarded financially. But Once you got it, you can live a good life.
