That said, let’s dive in to see the first one.

Year of creation / Number of years of companies and other details

This direct sales multi-level marketing company was founded in 2008. And since then it has been turning heads all over the internet.

Here is a synthetic view of it:

Full company name: Doterra Essential oils Multi-level Marketing Company

Location: Based out of Pleasent Grove, Utah Distribute worldwide.

This company got its start when the founders left their former employer and actual competitor Young Living and began their own program.

The name Doterra comes out of Latin and means “Gift of the earth”.

This startup met many problems right from the beginning.

Their former company brought a lawsuit against them claiming many things which were later all dismissed. The suit itself was also dismissed, and this cleared the way for Doterra to become worldwide.

Today it counts 3 million distributors it calls wellness advocates.

Doterra is now a huge organization that even claims ownership of the Doterra Healing Hands Foundation. This organization cooperates worldwide with all kinds of humanitarian projects.

Young Living was founded in 1993. They are based out of Lehi, Utah.

Soon after creation, the company had a second farm in the USA and a third overseas. It didn’t take them long after that to create the first automated computerized steam distillery.

Founder(s) and/or Director(s) of the company

The company was founded in 2008 by Dr. David K Hill, Robert Young, David Serling, Corey B. Lindley, Mark A. Wolfert, and Gregory P. Cook.

Mary Young is their CEO.

It all began when after a back injury Donald Young got interested in essential oils and alternative medicines. This engrossed him so much that he and his wife Mary took over a farm and started manufacturing their own essential oils.

Position among top 100 MLM companies in the world

It is number 16 on the list of top 100 multi-level marketing companies in the world.

Young Living is number 17 on the list of top 100 multi-level marketing companies in the world.

Products and/or services offered

This company markets over 100 different products. The bulk of it is essential oils, from which they got their name Doterra Essential Oils.

These oils are all-natural and plant-based. They come in a variety of blends and individual oils. And they are meant for cleaning and to be used as supplements for the body, personal care and healthy living. There are even many more others.

Doterra has a huge amount of products. That’s why their product list consists of multiple pages.

In fact, there are so many products that it would not be fun to list them all here. The alternative therefore is to go to their website and take a look at what they have to offer.

There you can see both the wholesale prices and the retail prices on their product lists. This comes accompanied with a points value for their rewards program that is part of their package.

With an interest in essential oils and alternative medicines, the founder and his wife Mary bought a farm and started manufacturing their own essential oils.

Having a second farm in the USA and a third overseas, the company soon created the first automated computerized steam distillery.

This put them on the way to creating a 1.5 billion dollar annual business.

Number of countries in which the companies do business

Doterra is becoming more and more worldwide. So much so that today it is found in over 100 counties where they have 3 million wellness advocates.

Young Living ships to over 100 countries. Check the list here.

Business model / Compensation plan

This program has been touted as the fastest-growing MLM in the world. It raked in sales of over one billion last year alone.

Because of the advanced training they give their affiliates and the use of experienced affiliates as personal mentors, Doterra Essential Oils claim to be the highest earners in the business.

In effect, you make money by commissions upfront as well as residual. In addition to an online lead generation program, they offer a 25 percent discount on all products to their affiliates. There is also a 25 percent discount on online shopping.

The company reports a 79 to 85 percent rate of retention of customers. And all the reviews we saw paint them as being one of the best MLM programs available nowadays.

You can join Doterra Essential Oils for $35.00. This will enable you to buy the products at wholesale prices. But that’s not all. There’s a starter kit to be bought for you to become an affiliate. When you do this you will be credited back your $35.00 membership fee.

Then you can sell the products and recruit other affiliates and customers under you.

A standard MLM system is what Young Living has put in place. In it, distributors are required to make monthly sales of 100 dollars to qualify for commissions.

Now, they can move up the ladder through building a down line of compatible distributors. The biggest commissions come from their downline distributors’ sales and more so from their own personal sales.

How can you best start with this company?

It is to buy a starter kit for $165.00. You can get into this program for as little as $40.00 but the best value is the $265.00 kit.

In this kit you will find $400.00 worth of products, your membership, a diffuser, and 12 essential oils that are most popular sellers.

What else you must do is to enroll in the essential rewards program. It is what will enable you to receive perks and free products and extra rewards for loyal members.

In this essential rewards program, the first 3 months of membership will get you 10 percent back on your purchases. From four to twenty-four months, you will earn 20 percent back on your purchases. And after twenty-four months, the figure increases to 25 percent.

Furthermore, you will earn loyalty gifts for consecutive orders of three, six, nine and twelve months.

When you make consecutive orders over twenty-four months, you will earn an ER exclusive oil formulated by D. Gary Young.

When you reach ER status you will be able to open all kinds of perks with the company. This includes shipping discounts.

Annual sales

Doterra Essential Oils makes an annual sales of 1.70 billion dollars.

Young Living makes an annual sales of 1.5 billion dollars.

Pros and cons

The pros

  • Extensive training
  • Experienced mentors
  • 25 percent discount on products
  • Low-cost entry fees
  • Rewards program
  • Worldwide customers and support
  • High-quality products
  • Solid company

The pros are endless with so many selling points. And the size of their commission program really makes them a step above most MLM programs.

The cons

The biggest cons come from former associates plus all the negative publicity their claims have generated.

The founders’ earlier association with Young Living led to much destructive publicity. As we all know, when many people hear something negative, they tend to believe it at face value. Then they move on, never looking back and checking to see if it was really true.

This brings about negative reviews as well as many bad statements for a company. For that reason, you must be sure to get negative feedback from some in the industry should you become affiliate of Doterra.

Another damaging thing was when the products were labelled by the former company as not being pure. This was all proven to be false accusations, but the harm had already been done. People tend to believe what they first hear and run with it. No amount of denial can erase the false impression created. So affiliates must be prepared to be confronted with misguided negative views.

Another con is the price of their oils. You can easily get comparable qualities of oils in stores for a much lower price, but the company counters that you are getting what you pay for with those other companies. Really the customer retention numbers Doterra gives would back that claim.

  • Solid time tested company
  • Great compensation plan
  • Solid products
  • A great support system in place
  • Stands behind the products

  • Many reports of distributors not advancing to the commissions level
  • Emphasis is on recruiting people over product sales
  • Bad reputation over false claims of cures for diseases

Bans / Complaints / Legal issues

None to report for this company.

If something good can be said about this company, it is that they are legit in their multi-level marketing practices. They are also not in any way a pyramid scheme. Unfortunately they have had their share of legal issues concerning false claims.

In effect, Young Living received a warning in 2014 for declaring that their products are cures for diseases. These included Ebola, Insomnia, Parkinson’s disease, Cancer, and Diabetes. Other claims concerned Autism, Dementia, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Heart Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and Hypertension.

It wasn’t the company as such which made those claims but their distributors who did so on their websites. This obliged Young Living to put a code of ethics in place that all distributors must strictly comply with.

As if that was not trouble enough, the company got caught in another storm in 2000 with the design of their distillers. This happened when a worker lost his life in an explosion. Young Living had to pay $10,280 in fines for seven violations.

A more financially damaging case took place in 2017 and cost them $760,000 in fines for illegally trafficking Spikard and Rosewood oils.

Our view of / take on the company

Young Living tried to take them to court and sue them. Apparently they also had a negative review campaign going (according to many sources but none confirmed). Fortunately Doterra Essential Oils has not only survived but is thriving.

They have a worldwide presence, make over 1 billion dollars in sales annually, and even own a nonprofit foundation that does wonderful work helping people all over the world.

They have disproved of every single negative issue brought against them and keep on growing at an astounding rate.

The purity of their oils and products is ensured by their own purity program. Above all, the quality and purity of their products have withstood numerous scientific studies and analysis.

In view of all that precedes, we can only give this company a big thumbs up. Consequently we highly recommend them to people interested in making money working a legitimate MLM program!

The company, its compensation plan, and the products all got us raving about them.

Our love for them would have been greater had they not placed emphasis on building distributors downline over the sale of their products.

How else could we feel about them when such an attitude puts a bit of a downer on MLM companies. This is because this way of doing business is a sure formula for failure by its distributors. And this shows in the percentages of Young Living distributors not making their monthly minimums.

Despite all the negative facts above, you can still make money with this company if you are good at building downlines. The proof is that Young Living boasts million-dollar distributors.

It is good to know that this program is not for everyone. It is especially indicated for people who have the capacity in downline building and recruiting. These people can no doubt make a living working this company’s compensation program.

We give this company a thumbs up, but recommend it only to those who understand the concept and want to move ahead with them.

We want you to check our number one recommended program which provides true value, can be automated, can earn you a residual income, you can relate to and promote passionately and receive support and help.
