That said and without further ado, let’s get it on.
What leads to success in these bad economic times?
We can all agree that the economy in these COVID-19 pandemic times, and even before then, is bad. But I’m sure we will have a hard time agreeing on what “success” is.
This is because success does not have the same ring for all of us.
Surely, success means material things to some people: a Rolls Royce, a private jet, a yacht, a mansion, a property on Dubai, a string of booming businesses, and the rest.
For others, success means putting lack of money behind them, being able to devote time to their hobbies and family, help others, etc.
While some of us will want ostentatious things and others will be satisfied with just the necessities of life, what none of us wants is a life full of:
- lack of money to pay off those debts
- a job we hate because it pays us so little
- fearing the end of the month because it’s time to pay the landlord the rent
- worrying about falling sick because of having no health insurance cover
- anxious about dying suddenly because you have no life assurance
- afraid about the children going to college because you haven’t prepared for it
- concern about retirement because you haven’t saved for it
- in short, distress about today and the future in general
Unfortunately, this is what applies to many of us. We try hard but never succeed in solving any of these “headaches”. We feel like being stuck in a sort of inertia, like a fossil frozen in time.
We will first help you take stock of your life as you’re living it now, how you could break out of that mold, where you could move to next, and how to control that process.
A change is gonna come
You remember that song?
It expressed hope in a seemingly hopeless situation. But recording artist Sam Cooke was right: the only constant in life is change.
The seconds tick into minutes. The minutes tick tock into hours. The hours beat into days. The days change into nights and become weeks. The weeks roll into a month. The months accumulate to become a year. The years become decades and the decades stretch into centuries and the centuries into millennia. Over and over again.
Change happens all around us. We are born as kids. We grow into infants, children, adolescents, young adults, adults, and seniors. We get married, make children, get divorced, die, fall sick, get better, go to school, drop out, leave school with a qualification, get a job, move to another job, lose the job, buy a home, lose it in a foreclosure, etc.
Even your own body changes. Every second. Every minute. Every hour. Every day. Every night. Every week. Every month. Every year. Every decade. And, if you live that long, in a century.
As you see, change is all around us. While you cannot avoid these changes, you can make them work for you or let them work against you.
You can let your day drift idly by or have a productive day. You can guide your children to become responsible citizens or leave them glide into crime. You can find ways to save your marriage or let it end in divorce. You can adopt a healthy lifestyle or abuse your body and pay for it. You can concentrate on your studies and succeed at school or give priority to something else and drop out of school.
Now, given the choice, will you let life work for you or against you?
Surely, you would want to control what happens to you so that you come out victorious and happy.
“I’ve done everything to no avail”
You’ve tried everything but nothing seems to work for you?
Did you know that of all creatures, only human beings have the power to make changes in their lives and in their surroundings?
Why do you think people are held responsible for their acts? And why are we accused for damaging the environment leading to climate change?
Yes, you have the ability to make choices and decisions. Will you learn to use yours to your advantage or continue to ignore it at your cost?
Yes, you can change your circumstances
You can open the door to your future and secure it no matter your age, background, or circumstances.
Maybe you don’t believe in the Bible, but permit me to quote from it: Like Matthew 16: 18-19 and Matthew 18: 18-19: whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
What does that mean?
Life operates on CAUSE and EFFECT. For every result, effect, or outcome, there is a corresponding cause. Eat junk food and your health will pay for it. Eat healthy food and you will enjoy its benefits. Drop out of school and you cannot hope to obtain a high paying job. Stick to your studies and obtain your degree and you may get the job of your dreams.
True, not all of us have the same chances in life. Some are born into wealth with silver spoons in their mouths. But many of us have disadvantages stacked up against us right form birth. Like being born into a broken home or a bad neighborhood, being raised by a single parent, being abused by people and the society.
I like the proverb which says that anytime you’re looking at (that is, envying) those ahead of you, know that there’re others behind you!
This is not meant to make you complacent. No.
No matter the obstacles blocking you, know that many people have broken through those same hindrances or even worst ones to be successful today. Why do you think we have the expression ‘from rags to riches’? If others in your same circumstances have overcome their barriers and made it, then can you too.
It was Einstein who said, “Madness is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.” If you continue to do what you’ve always done, don’t expect to see results other than what you’ve got up to now.
Only by changing the way you do things, your mindset, can you hope to change your life for the better.
Let me again paraphrase the Bible: A house built on shifting sand cannot stand, for the winds come and blow it down. But one built on a rock stands the test of time.
So, we are going to look at five solid foundations which can bring success into your life.
- Positive directions
- Continuous education
Did you know that many of us spend a lot of time to seriously plan a mundane activity like a weekend and give none to our future? We let tomorrow take care of itself, hoping things will turn out alright. No doubt we get what we didn’t plan for. For writer, philosopher, scientist, politician, patriot, Founding Father, inventor, and publisher Benjamin Franklin warned us that failing to plan is planning to fail.
What you need are positive directions, not just directions.
‘”Positive directions” means choosing directions that are most likely to lead you to the kind of life and lifestyle that you want,’ says How to open the door to your future (The official ICS guide to success in life)
We already said that if you continue doing what you are doing now, you can only reap what you’ve always got.
But what if you changed that direction to things like watching useful YouTube videos about how to create a business online, attending seminars and webinars on how to run an online business successfully, signing up for an online course on how to become an online entrepreneur?
Isn’t that positive?
Yes, it is because it has the capacity to move you from the shit you’re in now towards a bright future.
Education is what opens doors. I think you’ve heard that before.
But maybe what you may not have heard are facts of life concerning education.
- High school graduates earn more per year than people with lower qualifications
- People having career training/diplomas earn more than high school certificate holders
- College/University degree holders earn even more than the other two
Simply put, the higher your educational level, the more income you receive.
So, if you don’t have a high school diploma and you want to earn more, what must you do? And if you have a high school diploma and you want to earn more, what must you do? And if you have a career training/diploma and you want to earn more, what must you do?
So striving for a high school diploma, then a career training/diploma and finally a college/University degree are all positive directions you make take to open the door to your future and secure it.
All these take money, and it’d be worth it. For, as Benjamin Franklin says, “If a man empties his wallet into his head, no one can take it from him.”
“There is a ‘principle of success’ called “The Power of Positive ASSOCIATION”. It basically means that you either hold yourself back or improve yourself based on the people you spend time with most, because their values, ideas and directions are always influencing your own,” How to open the door to your future (The official ICS guide to success in life)
You’ve no doubt heard of “peer pressure”, that assertive influence which sends you in a direction wished by a group.
This direction can be positive sending you in the direction to make you achieve them or driving you in the negative direction which will deprive you from doing anything useful.
If your group is ponting you where you can meet your bright future, all well and good. But if it’s not, then you need to reevaluate who you spend time with, who you take advice from, who you discuss your plans with, etc.
Look for another group. It can be family members, friends, neighbors, present or former class or schoolmates, colleagues, a mentor, a teacher, a coach or a consultant. They must be people who share your vision or have successfully walked that road already.
Nobody has ever achieved anything with a mere dream. That’s why it’s called “‘wishful thinking’, a hopeful confidence that what one wishes for will occur or is the case.” The best you can do with this is to build castles in the air. And you know who can live in them!
I think Liz Smith, a famous syndicated newspaper columnist expressed this idea better when she said, “Begin somewhere. You cannot build a reputation on what you intend to do.”
And what is that ‘somewhere’?
Any work is better than no work just as half a loaf is better than none.
I began work in a new German import-export company with a salary I’m even ashamed to call a bonus. Thanks to my mother’s foresight, I accepted the offer.
“Tell me which is better,” she had said, “zero amount or anything above zero?”
I ended up a few years later as deputy manager with a company car and official accommodation and travelling all over the place for business!
An elder brother of mine who headed a large international organization for years and constantly travelled around the world to attend conferences, said, “What people say and how they express themselves let you know those who have stopped learning after school.”
Yet the Ghanaian scholar Dr. Kweggyir Aggrey said: “The best education you receive is the one you give yourself.”
But how many adults learn after leaving school, apart from reading the newspaper and watching television?
“…the majority of adults NEVER visit the public library, and about half of all adults NEVER go into a bookstore…In contrast, successful people are usually involved in lifelong learning. …They tend to continually read and improve in their own career area.”
Lucky you! The computer and the internet has brought the library and the bookstore at your fingertips. Is there an argument not to read or learn?
No, there isn’t. Besides, to open the door to your future and secure it demands reading and learning.
How to manage your present circumstance and get ahead in life
Are you in any one of these categories:
- College/University student struggling with finances
- Retired individual/veteran on a low retirement with no savings

Switching from ‘working for a living’ to ‘building a career’ has become the craze for some time now.
Many people are locked in work whose nature or the salary it offers interest them in any way. This is underemployment.
Yet our work and our self-esteem go together. So when we hate our work, we don’t seem to like ourselves or anything else.
You can escape a dead-end job
While many people are trying to run away from low-end, low-wage, service-oriented jobs, unfortunately those are the ones being created. Things like fast food restaurants, delivery and store clerk jobs.
We told you to start your job experience from somewhere. But one thing is clear: you may have a hard time leaving your low wage job if your education is not even up to high school level.
How do you come out of this rut?
Career thinking and career training are the answers.
Should you embrace ‘Entrepreneurship’?
The industrial revolution released people from harsh rural activities to factory work in the nineteenth century in most western countries.
Soon factory work also imprisoned people.
Then the Internet came in to liberate today’s workers leading to a home-based business and entrepreneurial explosion.
Starting your own business, from home, in your spare time, gives you the opportunity to earn extra income and also develop new and varied skills, increase your self-confidence and make useful contacts.
You may say you’re not cut out to be an entrepreneur. How do you know when you haven’t even tried?
Listen to a writer called Joan Didion: “What I want to tell today is…throw yourself into the convulsions of the world…live in it. Take chances. Make your own work, take pride in it, seize the moment.”
Yes, seize the moment.
