Optavia Review

Today we will be doing an Optavia review.

This review has been very interesting to research. This is because they belong to a parent company that has changed the name of this division from Take shape For Life Ice to Optavia in July of 2017.

Back in 2002 according to Wikipedia, “Retired Marine Colonel Bradley T. MacDonald and Chairman of the Board at the time, along with clinical specialist Dr. Wayne Scott Andersen created Take Shape For Life as a personal Coach to Client system and the company’s “Habits of Health System.”

In 2017 the company changed this division’s name from Take Shape For Life to Optavia along with the release of their new product line, Optavia essentials. We will get into these products shortly but the whole idea of the new product line was a coach to client direct sales program.

Once this new product line was introduced this division took off like a wildfire. And the company reported nine straight quarters of growth. This was a pretty good sign they were here to stay for a while.

In 2018 they expanded into Singapore and Hong Kong.

Optavia is a publicly-traded company.

There was a minor lawsuit in 2012. This involved the parent company and the United States Department Of Justice over a claim that one of their products, Medifast 5 in 1 plan, claimed the users could lose up to 2-5 pounds per week. But they did not produce scientific research to back up the claim.

Medifast paid a $3.7 million settlement for the false advertising claim.

The main company is located in Owings Mills, Maryland and they have recently been voted as one of the 100 most trusted companies in the world by Forbes.

Optavia offers different meal plans to help you lose and maintain a healthy weight. This is through using both their products and their personal coaches, who are also their sales distributors.

Their most popular diet plans are:

  • Optimal Weight 5 & 1 Plan
  • Optimal Weight 4 & 2 & 1 Plan
  • Optimal Health 3 & 3 Plan

They also offer diet plans for people with special needs, different ages such as teens and the elderly. There are also hydration kits like Purposeful Hydration which they claim lets customers know when and how to stay hydrated.

Foods included in their plans include bars, smoothies, soups, shakes, bars, brownies, crunchers, and drinks.

These foods provide all the calories and nutrients needed for a healthy diet according to the company claims.

Their plans also require a fueling kit that includes all kinds of products. These include Cheddar Herb Biscuit or Chocolate Cherry Ganache Bars, and Dark Chocolate Coconut Curry Bars. Others are Wild Blueberry Almond Hot Cerea and Chocolate Cherry Ganache Bars.

All of their products are high in fiber, low in sugar and carbohydrates, and have high-quality proteins. They also have daily vitamins and are non-GMO and gluten-free.

The cost of these programs vary but they can get a bit spendy up to the cost of $400.00 monthly.

They also offer all kinds of recommended books to help keep their customers on track. They are also support groups along with the personal coaches.

Optavia uses a standard multi-level marketing model for its coaches.

You get commissions on product sales and on your downline product sales from the people you recruit to become coaches.

There are three main ways to earn money with Optavia.

  1. 1. Heath coach – This income is from direct income sales
  2. 2. Business Coach – This income comes from building coaching teams
  3. 3. Business leader income – building and leading your own organization.

The complete compensation plan can be found here. We recommend checking out as it is very detailed and it would be hard to properly explain it here.

The pros

  • Long established company
  • Low sign up cost
  • Great community of support
  • Great community for customers
  • Full training offered for both coaches and customers
  • Good compensation plan
  • Great rating from Forbes

The cons

  • High cost of products
  • Too much emphasis on recruiting new coaches
  • Side effects from products can be severe
  • Pending lawsuits

Our view

We feel this is a good company with a great reputation and a really effective business plan.

We are a bit concerned by the high prices of their products. But considering all that is included in their meal plans as far as products, support, and coaching, it is not a big concern. They seem to be selling well.

We like the training offered and the many different ways of making money they offer and we give them a thumbs up for both the beginners and the veteran multi-level marketing marketers.

We hope our Octavia Review has helped explain who and what they are and what they have to offer both in products and in marketing options.

  1. I think my biggest concern is it is a division on Medifast and I just think their products are over priced and questionable quality. But, I believe that is my personal opinion. Optiva is a different division so set aside my bias to read your review. There are some great pros listed and this mlm looks very legit. However, the list cons raise some red flags so I wouldn;t want to jump in right away. As time as gone by, I have been more comfortable with affiliate marketing than any MLM I have read on.

    • Hey Lee,

Why does their being a division of Medifast make it your biggest concern? However I understand your stand concerning their over-priced and questionable quality products. I also agree that while some great pros can make an mlm look legit, just a few red flags could drive away people. I wish you good luck with your affiliate marketing business.
