Mary Kay: The Company

One woman can pursue her dreams to signify selling mary key

Mary Kay Ash formed this company in 1963 and it has evolved into a worldwide business with sales of over 3.25 billion.

It is based out of Addison Texas and is still owned and run by the Ash family.

It is a multi-level marketing company that is privately owned and is based on its sales force of distributors called beauty consultants.

They manufacture their own products out of Dallas Texas and have another manufacturing plant in China.

One very interesting fact about Mary Ash is her pink Cadillac that was a huge promotional vehicle in the early days of the company.

In 1968 Mary purchased a brand new Cadillac from a Dallas Dealer and had it pained the same shade of pink as one of her products.

She then rewarded her top five sellers in 1970 with their very one Cadillacs.

To date, GM claims they have made over 100.000 custom Cadillacs for the company. That is a few cars!

The company has expanded its car rewards to multiple sales level goals for its distributors and has expanded its car choices to BMWs, Malibus and even Mustangs.

That is a pretty good incentive program to have!

The products

The product line for Mary Kay is huge and there simply are too many products to list here. But one thing is for sure: they are top quality and priced very reasonably.

It takes a stand-alone product line to back a successful MLM program and this company surely has that covered.

With a product line of this size, it opens the door to a huge amount of potential customers. And according to reviews, it is quite easy to build a customer base rather quickly.

The compensation Plan

There are two ways to make money with this company. You can sell their products and you can recruit new distributors.

To get into the program you must buy a 100 dollar starter kit to qualify as a distributor.

Since Mary Kay is a private company they do not have to disclose information on their distributors. So there is not much available to the public on the details of their program. But in many reviews that we have read, the distributors claim some pretty good income levels.

What we could find was recruiting commissions of 13% paid directly from the company and not your downline, and retail sales commissions of 50% over wholesale. Not bad at all.

The company does have an annual turnover rate of 68%. Most of this is due to people who try to be distributors and decide it is not for them and go back to being regular customers.

If you are conversant with MLM, you know you must be focused and driven to make money in any MLM program. And you also know this is not for the average person.

Even with the higher turnover rate, it looks like most end up staying as customers. And that is the heart of the business. Without those customers the rest cannot work.

Legal Issues

Be a boss babe!

We were surprised that a company in this type of business does not have any real lawsuits against them. Rather, they have taken others to court for infringement and other business issues.

There were only two cases we were able to find.

The first case was Woolf v. Mary Kay Cosmetics in which the plaintiff won this suit as she claimed she was illegally released from the company for not making her quotas for 3 consecutive months.

She claimed this was due to illness as she had cancer and the case applied workplace rights to an independent contractor for the first time in history.

The second case we found was against Touch of the Pink Cosmetics. They were buying leftover stock cheap from former consultants of Mary Kay distributors and selling them for a huge discount on their website.

Mary Kay won that suit.

On the topic of animal testing, Mary Kay has taken a stand against this practice and was the first in this niche to do this by signing a Peta Pledge.

Our take on Mary Kay

This company has a proven track record, an outstanding product line, years of success and seems to be very eco-friendly in their business dealings.

Their incentive plan with the cars program and many other perks they offer make this a very desirable Multi-level marketing investment and we give it a huge thumbs up!

Remember when deciding where to invest your time and money in MLM, keep in mind how much work is involved and if you are up to the constant pressure for sales. This is because this is usually the reason why people drop out. But if you think you have what it takes, this company is a winner for sure.

Thanks for checking out our review of selling Mary Kay. We hope this helps you in your quest to find a good MLM program to invest in. Because it is an investment in your future and that is the best kind of investment a person can ever make!

    1. Hi Travis,

Oh, you work just near the convention center in downtown Dallas where Mary Kay has their annual convention? How I wish I were in your shoes? Look how you have met many wonderful women that sell Mary Kay and love doing what they do.

You have purchased many items for the women in your family, but haven’t you thought of distributing Mary Kay products yourself? Since you suspect that there is a good base and lots of support.

  2. Hi, Mary Kay has been around for a long time and it has a fantastic reputation as a business. It is like the Cadillac of MLM in that it naturally attracts great people to sell for it.

The quality of the products is top notch, so you are joining a very reputable and respected company. One of the best in the industry, if not the best.

So naturally it will cost you money to join this business, and make sure you know why you want to join Mary Kay. Do you just want to make money, or are you passionate about the product?

Are you willing to show up to the meetings and work on your business and personal skills with your champion team members? This is invaluable by itself. I have a friend who is in MLM and he shows up every week to his team meetings, and I can tell his public speaking skills have improved.

    Thanks

    1. Hi Jake,

I always sppreciate it when you take part in a conversation on this blog, because you writ extensively.

I like your descriving Mary Kay as the Cadillac of MLM. Yes, it naturally attracts great people to sell for it the way Cadillac does.

Everybody knows that a good quality product sells iself, that is, it sells like hot cake. Andthat is the case of Mary Kay with their top notch products. Yes, joining Mary Kay is being part of a very
reputable and respected company. It certainly figures in the top of the best in the industry.

Even if it will cost you money to join this business, one thing is sure: you can easily make your money back if you know how to sell.

The meetings are part of the business. That is what will galvanize you to work on your business
and personal skills with your champion team members, as you observed.

Like the friend you talked about who shows up every week to
his team meetings, and thus his public speaking skills have
improved, that is something positive for one to learn for other areas of one’s life.

Thanks again for your valuable contribution to this conversation.

  3. I found this review quite interesting. My aunt used to be a Mary Kay sales representative. She got to drive a special car for awhile. Back then I considered the products to be too expensive, so I never bought any. She eventually quit, and I never asked why. It would be best, methinks, to have an extroverted personality in this job. I don’t like leaving the apartment or driving, so it’s not for me. However, I do believe Mary Kay is a valid career opportunity for people with an outgoing nature. How would you say the cost of these products compare to what you can find online?

    1. Hi Cathy,

I’m glad you found my review “quite interesting.” This means that I have fulfilled the purpose for which I set out to writeit.

Your aunt used to be a Mary Kay sales representative? Wow! And made her to drive a special car for awhile? Please find out why she quit. You may learn a thing or two.

Yes, this business is best suited for an extroverted person. And it may not be for you since you don’t like leaving the apartment or driving.

Concerning how the cost of these products compare to what you can find online, I will say you get what you pay for.

      Thanks.
