Shaklee is a company that was founded in 1956 by Forrest C. Shaklee. He is a nutritionist from Iowa who was the man who invented the first vitamin in 1915. This was called Shaklee’s Vitamized Minerals.

In 1960 he moved on to also include in his product line biodegradable organic cleaning products. And from the beginning, Shaklee marketed his products through multi-level marketing.

Around the mid-1980s the company relocated to the financial district in San Francisco. And it was actively a publicly-traded company on the New York Stock Exchange.

The company went through many changes in the following years, including a purchase of the Bear Creek Corporation in 1986 from RJR Nabisco for a purchase price of $123 million.

You may have heard of the Harry and David fruit of the month club made famous by Bear Creek.

In 1989 Shaklee Corporation made a deal to sell 78 percent of their Shaklee Japan division to Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical Company. This was for a whopping $350 million along with royalty licensing rights.

In March of 1989, another company tried to do a takeover of the company. And Shaklee had to resort to selling the remaining company holdings to Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical Company. This was through a stock partnership that thwarted the takeover bid.

The company then became a privately traded entity and moved from San Francisco to its current location in Pleasanton, California.

From 188 to 2000 UCI professional cycling enjoyed Shaklee as a title sponsor and in their last year of sponsorship, the team was a top-ranked tier 11 team.

Another interesting note is their association with NASA during their shuttle program. Shaklee supplied all of the rehydration products used by the shuttle crews.

Today the company is run by its current CEO Roger Barnett. And it deals in weight management products, beauty, household, and natural nutrition products.

As we just listed above the company has a pretty broad list of products
available.

All of their products are tested and must pass a very detailed testing procedure.

They hold over 100 patents and have over 120 scientific papers written on their product research.

Their testing is so intense that they had to take their third-best product off the market because it could not pass the testing.

They use products that are pure and tested by 83000 different testing points to ensure they are fresh and pure. Now that is commitment!

All of their products are science-based, and they approach the business from a balance point of view.

If the body is balanced it can self-sustain life!

The company offers five different plans for their customers.

  • The essential plan
  • The RX for a Healthier Life Plan
  • The Shaklee 180 Starter Kit
  • The Life Plan
  • The Vitalizing Plan

Each plan has specific results and you can explore these plans and more on their website.

The business model

They run a popular multi-level marketing plan that rewards commissions for sales of products and for sales of recruited distributors in your downline.

Distributors get between 16 to 36 percent discounts on products and 12 to 20 percent commissions on downline sales.

They also pay out weekly bonuses and offer other points-based bonuses.

There are four different signup packages available for new distributors.

  • Level 1: Consumer
  • Level 2: Member
  • Level 3: Distributor
  • Level 4: Qualified Distributor

The best way to check out their complete program is to visit their website as it would make this review extremely long if we posted the many different levels and details.

We will say we like their plan and we love the way they approach selling their products first.

The pros

  • A well-established company that has been around forever
  • Outstanding product line
  • Good business plan
  • reasonable signup costs
  • reasonable product pricing

The cons

  • lawsuits pending against former distributors (Not from the company, but from regulators)

Our view

We have a really good feeling about this company. This is rightfully so considering how long they have been in business and the quality of their products.

That being said, we also like their business plan and the way they put the quality and sales of their products above everything else in the company.

That to us is a good sign of a successful multi-level marketing company for sure.

We are happy to give them a thumbs us for both the beginners and the veterans of MLM marketing.

We hope our Shaklee review has helped you in your quest for a good multi-level marketing company to both invest and work with. We feel this one is a keeper on the list of quality companies.

  1. Based on its age and founder’s reputation, you’d think Shaklee would be a highly recommendable business with laudable products. I would still never want to actually work for an MLM because of my extreme introversion. It would be great, however, to try their products. I shall look further into their health products.

    • Hi Cathy,

Yes, the longevity of a company and the founder’s reputation normally determine the quality f a company. Shaklee seems to defy this rule. You’re yet another commenter who doesn’t like MLM. Come back and tell us about their health products.

  2. Hi,

I loved your review of Shaklee I never Knew there are companies still operating since 1958. I thought they were extinct.

It’s kind of scary to purchase from a company that is currently facing a lawsuit and especially since these are regulators I’m a little bit reluctant to try?

Have you tried them yourself Akoli and what are the masses saying about them and their experience

    • Hi Michael,

Thanks for appreciating my review of Shaklee. There are companies older than this one still in operation.

You’re right feeling scared to purchase from a company that is currently facing a lawsuit. Should that go bad, regulators could shut it down or hand it draconian conditions to continue to operate.

No, I haven’t tried them myself. I’m writing about many MLM companies and joining them all will be a difficult exercise.

  3. This is a great review and thanks for writing it. I’ve never heard of Shaklee so I got curious and went over their website to see what they sell. Apparently they have a wide variety of organic products and what caught my eye was their weight loss bundle pack. They are pricey if you purchase them individually but you can save a lot by buying in bulk.

Thanks again for writing this. It was very informative.

    • Hi Sunny,

Thanks for your comment on this review. Others have also said that they’ve never heard of Shaklee. However this made you curious and pushed you to check their website to see their products. Thanks for your advice to people to not purchase the company’s products individually but to save a lot by buying in bulk.

  4. I’m happy I found your review, this is the information I was looking for! I’m a bit disappointed to learn that it is an MLM business because I don’t particularly love this kind of business. 😐 But overall, as you said, it sounds like a trustable company. They’ve been active for a long time and that’s a really good characteristic!

Do you know the different prices for levels 2 to 4? Maybe it could be interesting that I take a look at this even if it’s an MLM company…

Thank you for sharing this short and sweet review! 😊

    • Hi Audrey,

I’m thrilled that you’re happy you found my review. Unfortunately you’re put off because it’s an MLM business which you don’t particularly love. The company is trustworthy.

  5. I would like to give special thanks to the writer because of writing an informative discussion about a renowned company named Shaklee. Shaklee is a multi-level marketing company, isn’t it?

Shaklee’s products are more popular than any other company’s products. Its products are justified products. And Its products have been researched by many scientists. It has been able to create value for its products to the customers. I am also a fan of Shaklee’s products.

I offer everyone to try Shaklee’s product. It is really an awesome article. I like this article very much.
