Southwestern Advantage Review

Today’s post will be a Southwestern Advantage Review.

After reading many of the online Southwestern Advantage reviews that are available, we felt that a good close look was in order.

Meanwhile, watch the video below:

This company is a bit different from most multi-level marketing companies. For the fact that it becomes more of a direct selling company with opportunities when you reach team leader status. You then earn under an MLM platform.

We know that sounds a bit confusing!

That will all make much more sense as we go along because we will explain in detail what the differences are.

Let’s start by seeing who they are, where they came from, and what they do.

Who is Southwest Advantage?

Where all this began was in 1855 when the Reverend J.R. Groves founded a privately traded company that was called Southwestern Company.

Today they go by their current name Southwest Advantage and are based out of Nashville, Tennessee.

New owners of this company are called the Northwestern Family of Companies.

The current CEO is Dustin Hillis.

This is a very old company and a very old school company in how they run their business. They are a direct marketing company that sells educational books, website subscriptions, and software door-to-door through independent contractors.

Recruits from universities and colleges are trained extensively to sell their products.

Their Products

These products are unique as they are intended to help kids who are struggling in school for any reason. They are in book form, which is hard to understand in today’s digital world.

The company has grade-specific materials targeted at specific problems and solutions kids go through. Though it sounds old school it is very much-up-to date material.

Pre-K through grade 2, grade 3 through grade 6, and 7th-grade through 12th-grade groups of materials are available.

A website for parents called Advantage4Parents subscription is also offered. This is to go along with the above material that is packed with valuable information on how to help your children with school issues.

These products are respected both by the parents association and the school industry and they work.

Southwest Advantage business plan

Younger people of today may think this business plan
is new but it has been around longer than this company which we said was founded in 1855.

Door-to-door sales used to be the only way you could buy some vacuum cleaners and other products. And people make a great living selling this way.

Set up strictly on commissions from sales, the independent contractors can and do make money. While it is not new, how this particular company does it is a bit unconventional.

Southwest Advantage recruits a few hundred college students from universities in England and thousands of university students from the United States. They are recruited every year to be independent contractors and sell Southwest Advantage products for the summer season.

Each contractor needs two people called endorsers to sign a letter of credit covering $500.00 per signer. This is to cover costs in case the said contractor does not pay what’s owed to the company at summer’s end for their products sold.

Endorsers are usually the parents of independent contractors. But they can be any responsible persons.

The independent contractor will attend a week-long training seminar in Nashville, Tennessee at their own expense. They will then work about 70 plus hours a week doing up to 30 presentations a day. They then must attend a local sales meeting every Sunday.

Contractors are required to cover their own expenses. They are able to keep the down payments on each order they sell to cover their day to day costs.

At the end of the summer season, the contractors have a meeting in Nashville. There, outstanding balances are paid to the company for the products sold. Then commission checks are cut and given to the independent contractors.

Summary

It seems like a huge commitment for unguaranteed monies, and that is what it is. But many swear by the life lessons learned and many make huge profits by working this program.

Independent contractors who show leadership and success in their sales may have the opportunity to become a sales team leader for the following summer season.

This puts them into the MLM program with commissions on the contractors in their group’s sales. They also receive other perks.

Some very successful people have been independent contractors for Southwest Advantage. They include federal judges, senators, governors, and even a federal prosecutor.

Campus bans

Because of the long hours, lack of benefits and cover for expenses of their independent contractors, several campuses have banned this company from recruiting their students for work.

They feel the company should treat their contractors as employees and that said employees should get employee benefits.

The University of Idaho, Durham, Maryland, Birmingham, and Harvard all joined in on the ban. But the company still recruits students despite this as the ban is legally non-binding.

Pros of working this program

  • Well-established company
  • Great products
  • 1-week training seminar
  • A chance for advancement into the MLM program
  • Summer work with great opportunity to make money

Cons of working this program

  • Door-to-door selling
  • Expenses are not covered
  • Training is in Nashville
  • The final payout is in Nashville
  • Nonbinding university recruiting bans on several campuses

Summary

Southwestern Advantage is not your everyday MLM company for sure, but we still like it!

If you like warm sales to family, friends and strangers and if door-to-door selling does not bother you, and if you do not mind working your tail off, then this just might be your ticket into the world of direct selling.

There is a chance of advancement to become a manager, thus entering the multi-level marketing division of their business plan. Mind you, the company is as solid as they get.

The positives definitely outweigh the negatives. So we give Southwest Advantage a big thumbs up!

  1. Hey Akoli, Thanks for writing a review on Southwest Advantage. It is good company in every way but I don’t like door to door selling. If a person can sell door to door then he get awesome earning from his business plan. Its education system creates leaders in my opinion.

I will give a try to your number one recommendation.

    Thank you

  2. Hi Akoli,

I really enjoyed reading your review of Southwestern Advantage. I had been looking into this as a way to earn some additional income, but the door to door selling is putting me off. Have you got any ideas that are just online to earn money? Your advice would be appreciated. Regards, Andrew

    • Hi Andrew,

I’m glad that my review pleased you a lot. Anyone wishing to sell Southwestern Advantage must meet 2 conditions: one of the them is the door-to-door selling which you said puts you off.
I don’t also think that you satisfy the second criterium which is that you must be a university student. However there are many ideas to make money online and secure your future online on this site. Just go to the search bar above and type in “Wealthy Affiliate Review” for example. At our reviews tap at the top of the homepage are also some good mlm opportunities that you can seize, like Avon.

      Thank you, Andrew

  3. Hello, thank you for this useful review about Southwestern Advantage. Recently, my wife finds this company and want to buy something for our daughter because her result is not good. She does the research a period of time but she finds the website of this company is so confusing and difficult to understand.

She just attracted by the business plan because she wants to buy the product and earn the money at the same time. Importantly, she knows nothing about that so she studies it slowly. Now, I’m responsible to study and explain it to her. I think it will spend a ton of time. I also know nothing.

Luckily I landed on your site. I can see you spend a ton of time to review this company that impresses me a lot. What you write is in-depth. It saves me a lot of time. You list down the pros and cons in a systematic way so I can read it easily and understand faster. You know, I need to explain it to her.

After reading your post, I think I don’t need to spend more time in this company. Thank you so much. I believe your post has already helped many people to save their money. Please keep sharing with us.

    • Hello there,

Thank you too for your very detailed comment. I don’t know but maybe your wife is not used to browsing websites that’s why she found the Southwestern Advantage website complex. Why didn’t you help her do the research?

Oh, I see you’re trying to help her now. But unfortunately you say you don’t also know anything. It’ll be a pity to let this opportunity pass her by. Why don’t you people contact the company about the issue? They might just help her kill two birds with one stone.

I’m proud that you found my site as the help you have been looking for. Yes, one needs a lot of time to sift through a ton of details to write something that really fits the company, their compensation plan, the business model, etc. Now, go ahead ane explain things to your wife. I guess she’ll appreciate it.

Of course I will keep sharing my mlm company reviews with you.

  4. Thanks for sharing a great detailed review on Southwestern Advantage business, I’m always looking for a way to make some extra dollars, but I think this company looks to get only young people from University campus.

As I read your review, this company shares some training for the newbies in Nashville, Tennessee in the USA, does this company covers the expenses of that training week?

I will give it a try to your #1 recommendation, it sounds a better way to start my own online business and I can learn how to work on it from home

    • Hi Alejandra,

Thanks for your comment and also for appreciating my review on this mlm company. Yes, I think they use young people from
University campuses because their product is mainly books. And who better to sell books than students?

      No, the
company does not cover the expenses of the training week at Tennessee. They estimate that it’s an extra for the students and they can afford to get that knowledge just as they are paying for their university studies.

Yes, please try my #1 recommendation. It far is a better way to start your own
online business and succeed in it. You are your own boss and keep all the profits.

  5. Hello.. Thank you for the time you have put into publishing this website and this article. Southwestern advantage is reputable with their products. I have a few kids in my neighborhood who are benefactors of this company. But then on a multilevel marketing basis I do not see edge over other leading companies. I think their incentives are too low. And the stress workers undergo is too much. Compared to the pay

    • Hello Benny,

Thank you too for complimenting me for creating this website and writing this article. I appreciate very much. Since you know some kids in your neighborhood who make some living with this company, then it is not entirely strange to you. I see you don’t like their incentives as they are too low and the stress workers undergo.

Thanks for your valuable contribution to this conversation.

  6. This is the first time that I am hearing about this Nashville advantage before but looking about the analysis that you have given on the platform, it seems like something I would’ve done if not for many of the things happening in Nashville. I wouldn’t travel to Nashville all because I need to take a training. I like that you have given full details on this direct marketing platform. Nice work

    • Hey Henderson,

I’m glad to see you comment on another blog post. Thank you as always. You people give me the power to continue. No, the company is not called Nashville Advantage but Southwestern Advantage. Maybe the confusion comes from the fact that you said you had not heard of this company until today. Events in Nashville scare you? Fortunately you don’t have to travel there for the training since you don’t even qualify. It was my pleasure to give these details about this company.

  7. Hello Akoli, thank you for sharing this review of Southwestern Advantage. I’m intrigued to see that this company has been around since 1855 😲 and they’re still functioning. That’s many many years ago; this is a proof that the company has good management system. This company looks cool but it’s restricted too as I have seen in this post. I hate door to door selling. I have some friends doing this; it’s hell! Well, looks like a great opportunity for those with great selling skills, sure!

Well, it’s not for me anyways.

    I celebrate you!

    • Hello there,

Thank you too for commenting this review of mine. Yes, 1855 is a long time. It even sounds like the stone age. And the fact that they’re still kicking sounds amazing. Sure, it must take something to stick around for so long. Um, unfortunately they take only students. Even if they didn’t, you couldn’t makeit with them since you said you hate
door-to-door selling. Yes, for people with those types of selling skills,
Southwestern Advantage sounds like a dream come true!

      Please do come back again.
