As a blogger you need highly effective SEO tips to know the steps to take to get your content showing up higher in search engines.

Although Google depends on several changes to the algorithm* to determine which content ranks for searchers’ queries, the best practices for SEO have remained fairly consistent over the years.

[*An algorithm is a process or set of rules followed by a computer for doing complex calculations. Can you imagine how complex it is for Google to judge and rank billions of blog posts from millions of blogs based on hundreds of different factors?]

If you make the effort and stick to these concepts and tactics, you’ll be much more confident with SEO.

So we’re going to see a summary list of 37 highly effective SEO tips for bloggers. You will learn what SEO is and why it is important for you. Above all, you’ll see how to do SEO and benefit from Google for years to come.

What is SEO?

Basically, SEO is about telling search engines that your blog is a relevant resource for people searching for information about your topic / industry. So that they direct them there.

…Why SEO is still important

When people are searching with Google, it is usually to find information, seek solution to a problem, research or buy a product.

These are golden opportunities to seize to get traffic, leads, and customers.

…How does SEO work?

SEO is a series of tactics which enable you to control on page and off page SEO.

On Page SEO includes elements which make up a web page. These are article quality, how well it’s optimized for keyword and meta value for that article. It also concerns HTML code, giving appropriate titles to every page, images, etc.

Some of the on page SEO you should do every time and which we will look at here are URL/Permalink, title, meta description or snippet, etc.

Off-Page SEO makes use of link building (backlinks), increasing link popularity by submitting open directories, search engines, link exchange, etc.

That said, here are a summary list of 37 highly effective SEO tips for bloggers that you need to start implementing right now.

They are divided into three:

  • 5 basic highly effective SEO tips for bloggers
  • 17 intermediate highly effective SEO tips for bloggers
  • 15 advance highly effective SEO tips for bloggers.

     I.        5 Basic summary list of highly effective SEO tips for bloggers

The first part concerns content matters:

1.    Think about what you’re going to write

Before they think of what to write, regular bloggers plan their writing calendar well in advance.

A blogger must think more in terms of topics and how to optimize the user experience.

What’s paramount is to write your content without worrying too much about SEO. This will make you to be focused mainly on your readers, which is more important.

Now, let’s go to the second highly effective basic SEO tips for bloggers.

2.    Make a structure

So start your write-up by creating a clear structure like this:

  • Set the stage for the discussion
  • Make your first point. Then explain it.
  • Go to your next point.
  • Continue doing this until you exhaust all your points.
  • Wrap up the article with a call to action.

The coming section is a highly effective SEO tip many new bloggers neglect. But this is not in your interest.

3.    Write titles for search engines, but especially for people

Titles play a role in SEO because they appear on Google search results pages.

To write Google-friendly titles, you must:

  • Endeavor to include your keywords in it
  • Write it to be captivating (capture attention for social media and search)
  • Keep it below 55-60 characters (longer than that it gets cut off on search results)

Each time choose titles which aptly describes your post.

Bloggers who have the Yoast’s WordPress SEO plugin installed can find help with some SEO matters (like learning to remove stop words from URLs, checking characters in titles, etc).

4.    Write to solve your audience’s problems

Google created the Hummingbird update to make the robot better understand the intent of searches.

For instance, if you were to Google “how to create an eBook,” Google would interpret that as meaning you’re looking for digital book creation software.

Take a cue from that and apply it to your blog. Meaning that your content should be written in a way that answers your target audience’s specific questions.

Questions asked on Quora, in forums, on social media and other resources can help you find out what your audience’s problems are.

5.   Prefer quality to quantity

This alone is maybe enough as a highly effective SEO tip for bloggers.

Quality is the most important criterion in your blog post.

This is what will make people share, link to and retweet them. Which will then increase your ranking in search engines.

     i.        Is content still king?

That question was asked by Ashley Faulkes in SEO Tips For Bloggers: How To Squeeze More Traffic Out Of Google

He says “…more than anything else, you need to produce content that matters. Content that people will bookmark, link to and share.”

And suggests instead that…

ii.        …“Quality content is the President, actually

“…, focusing on quality is one of the best ways you can get ahead of the competition,” he continued. “Because quality has so many great benefits.”

But I think the suggestion Quality content rather or actually is the king is more appropriate.

iii.        Quality content is what Google rewards

From an SEO perspective quality content and not just content is what counts.

That’s why on the introduction of the Panda update, sites with poor quality articles and pages, slowly faded from the best spots on Google.

Ashley Faulkes list some of the things to help you rank as:

  • Content length (longer, more informative and detailed)
  • Linking to quality content (linking out to authorities in your niche)
  • Low Bounce Rate (People coming onto your site and even staying longer)
  • Multimedia (Embedding images and video into your content)
  • References and Citations (proof of good research)

That’s all for basic highly effective SEO tips for bloggers.

We will now go to level two for intermediate highly effective SEO tips for bloggers.

II.        17 Intermediate summary list of highly effective SEO tips for bloggers

In this second part, we will look at some bit higher highly effective SEO tips for bloggers: On-Page-SEO

Therefore the first highly effective intermediate SEO tips for bloggers to do is to:

6.      Learn basic HTML

The HTML pertains to writing some headings with keywords in h1 or h2 and adding the nofollow tag in outgoing links. Others are creating and configuring the robots.txt file, editing the htaccess files, etc.

7.      Configure Robots.txt file in Search Console

Every website has a daily crawling budget. This budget must be distributed among your pages. So if your blog or site’s unnecessary ones get crawled too, this could affect you.

You can use the robots.txt file to tell the search engine crawlers to go or not to go to certain pages.

So, tell crawlers to avoid a particular page with the code below:

Disallow: /pagelink

On the other hand, you can direct crawlers to a given page with the following code:

Allow: /pagelink

8.    Mind your URLs

Have you as a blogger ever thought of your URLs as part of highly effective SEO tips? Yet they are, as you will soon find out.

   iv.        Reset SEO friendly URLs

Let’s say you published a blog post about the best affiliate marketing tools. If the URL shows “”, change it to “”

    v.        Transform those ugly-looking URLs into pretty ones

Compare this URL:

to this one:

The former link looks ugly.

How do you make links pretty and understandable to humans?

You can use programs like pretty link  or bitly.

vi.            Format your post URL link

Permalink plays a great role in search engine ranking of your post. For this reason, follow these two rules:

  • Keep the number of characters in post title to below 55 (5 or 6 words)
  • Remove Stop Words (a, the, and, etc.) from permalink

9.      Provide tags for your post

 vii.        Meta tags

Meta tags are in a sense, keywords which describe your post. They help search engines grasp the main topic of a page. As such, they are highly important SEO elements of your blogging efforts.

viii.        H1 title tag

Every page on your site has an H1 tag. It’s the headline of the page.

   ix.        Subheadings H2, H3

Your subheading carry tags h2 and h3 to clearly structure your posts. Thus they make it easier for search engines and readers to go through your content.

    x.        Meta description / snippet

This is made up of a few sentences that show up on a Google search result page only.

As you see in the screenshot above, the meta description:

  • Includes your keywords
  • Summarizes your post
  • Is enticing to make people click through to read the post
  • Is kept below 155 characters, otherwise the rest is cut off in SERPs

10. Use images and optimize them for SEO

Every blog post you publish should have at least one image.

Every image on your page must be optimized for SEO.

To do this, you have the alt text, the image file name, and possibly the caption text blanks.

Do you notice when you upload or insert an image into your WordPress blog post, those places below appear?

You have to insert the texts manually after uploading each image.

However, if you’ve already added the image, you have to click on it, and next on “edit”. Then you can add your text.

What goes into the alt tags?

Your alt tags should describe the images you’re adding and include your page title or at least the target keyword.

Adding the Alt text is important. Search engine robots can’t read images the way they can texts. So, it’s an opportunity for them to know the content of an image.

Also, people with disabilities cannot view images via their screen readers. So you need to describe your image for them.

11. Build links

One of the strongest search engine ranking factors is link building. It is therefore a very important highly effective SEO tip for bloggers.

Links are of two sorts: internal and external / outbound.

   xi.        Link internally

Internal links (links from one of your posts to another post on your site) aren’t as valuable as external ones. But they’re still an important SEO tactic.

So, now and then, search your website for the main keywords you used for your recent posts. Anywhere in old posts where you used those keywords or similar ones, add a link to the newer posts with the keyword as anchor text.

xii.        Build external or outbound links

You should reach out to other sites to link to and build a relationship. In turn, they might link back to you and share your post with their audience.

Now, how do you get backlinks?

Here are some ways.

xiii.        Get backlinks by guest post blogging on relevant blogs

It is important because the hardest part of SEO is getting other websites to link back to yours.

But you can get relevant blogs linking back to you by creating valuable content for them.

xiv.        Get backlinks by writing for article publishing sites

Here, you add a link back to your blog on the author bio at the end of that post.

See a list of the best article submission sites for 2019.

xv.        Get backlinks through other websites’ broken links

Let’s say you find a blog in your niche having a broken link. And you have got a blog post similar to the one the author was linking to.

Reach out to the person, tell them about their broken link and suggest they link back to yours instead.

xvi.        Don’t resort to links manipulation

Don’t sell, buy, or trade links that pass PageRank. This not only is contrary to Google’s Webmaster Guidelines, but it may cause the downranking of your website.

 xvii.            Use Nofollow external links

In WordPress, you can select HTML section of the post window and add rel=”nofollow” attribute just after URL to prevent search engines from crawling a particular link.

xviii.        Create linkable assets

Dominique Jackson in 7 Highly Effective SEO Tips for Bloggers, gave some linkable assets as:

  • A free tool or app
  • Case studies
  • Industry research or surveys
  • Influencer round-ups
  • Infographics
  • Mega lists
  • Online guide
  • Quizzes
  • Ultimate guide posts

   xix.            Beware of spam backlinks

You must periodically check your site for destructive backlinks and mark them as spam. This tells Google not to pass the value of the spam websites on to you.

12. Usability

Do you check if all of the images in your content work correctly?

Have you checked for broken links recently?

Do you know if your content loads quickly? In 3 seconds at most?

13.  Protect comment section of your post

Spam comments dilute your page’s rank. Therefore the Comment section of your post should be protected.

I use Akismet, the best WordPress spam plugin blocker around.

14. The right keywords are the beginning of SEO

And one of the most crucial highly effective SEO tips for bloggers.

So, when planning out your calendar for the coming weeks, spend some time doing keyword research.

xx.            Do keyword research and target long-tail keywords

Keywords are words or a group of them that people type into a search engine window to find the answers they are looking for questions.

So if you write articles or content using those keywords, the possibility of your articles or pages appearing in the search results are great.

You can also use keyword synonyms.

Thus, if a content ranks for the keyword ‘offers’ for example, Google will rank it for “coupons”, “discounts”, “coupon codes”, etc. This is because Google considers coupons, offers, discounts, coupon codes as synonyms and related keywords for “offers”.

xxi.        How can you find such words?

By using the free Google Keyword Planner tool in Google AdWords. It furnishes the data

Google collects on searches people perform in their search engine.

You can also find other phrases people use in searches. Just look at “People also ask” and “Searches related to” sections on the Google search engine results page.

xxii.        Finding money making keywords

Your keyword research should include those of commercial intent or buyer keywords.

Here is a more detailed post to help you understand buyer keywords.

xxiii.        Focus on long-tail keywords

If you are in the health advice field, you may think using the keyword “health advice” will make you show up higher because lots of people would be searching using “health advice.”

Using such a broad search term, you’ll come into competition with some popular websites which are already ranking very high on them.

Fortunately many of the people searching for health advice may employ instead “best exercises for high cholesterol” or “foods to improve digestion” for example.

These are the long-tail keywords to focus on.

Long-tail keywords are less competitive. So using such unique keywords will give you a better chance of showing up on page one of Google results.

xxiv.        Using your chosen keywords in your content

The basis for choosing the right keywords for your piece is to use a phrase users would also use to search for content.

This keyword must be present in the post title. It should also appear in the content a couple of times. Thus search engine robots know that your post is relevant to that specific search query.

 xxv.            Maintain the keyword density

This brings us to the number of times your chosen keyword should appear in your content. That is called keyword density. It is crucial for better ranking.

Too few will not make you rank well. Too many (called keyword stuffing) will lead to over optimization and Google penalty.

xxvi.        Providing more keywords

This is one of the must know highly effective SEO tip for bloggers. I got it from my Yoast SEO plugin. It concerns providing more keywords under the WordPress blog posting page.

  • Save

It enables me to provide my focus keyword and its synonyms. And four related keyphrases with their synonyms. These add to the keyword density of the post. Thus you don’t lose out on search volume (related search terms).

I also check the “people also ask” and “associated search sections” under the Google search results page.

Another highly effective SEO tip for bloggers you mustn’t miss is what comes next.

15.  Use Schemas

Schema is a specific vocabulary of tags. You can add them to your blog post’s HTML to improve the way your page is displayed in the search results. Thus making them more attractive and inviting to click.

16.  Implement a structured data markup

Structured Data are the markups in the code of your website. They help search engines understand your content and to find and present the most relevant results to the user.

If you just posted a tongue-licking recipe for microwaved chicken, you could implement a structured data markup which will make it visually appealing.

Therefore know what the search results page looks like for the term you’re targeting. This will make you know how best to optimize your blog posts and make you land the best spots on the page.

That said, let’s see the highly effective SEO tip which will make a blogger achieve that.

18. …Then optimize for rich search results

Let’s say your SERP research makes you discover keywords that bring up rich results. You should optimize your content taking into account the specific type of results that win that page.

You may find that you need to use schema markup to help your content stand out in the main list of results. Or that you may have to optimize your blog post to aim for the featured snippet.

19.  Provide good title, description, and footer text

The title, description and footer, are crucial in search engine optimization of every blog.

Include the keywords you are targeting for your blog in those places.

20.  TF*IDF – The algorithm to rule them all

TF*IDF is an algorithm used to see how many times a keyword appears in any content. Then it determines the word’s importance, or weight, in the content itself.

Read Bartosz Góralewicz’s “The TF*IDF Algorithm Explained, a step-by-step guide on how to effectively utilize the algorithm.

21. Monitor your blog’s performance

xxvii.        Have a look at your site’s loading speed

It is noted that 53% of visits are abandoned if a mobile site takes longer than three seconds to load.

Worse, crawlers also don’t like to wait for your website to load.

This affects your crawl budget.

Paste your blog URL into the free Google PageSpeed Insights. It will help you measure the upload speed of your website and analyse the content. It will also suggest changes to carry out to make it faster.

Does your blog use international languages like Spanish or English? Then try using a Content Delivery Network (CDN). It will decrease the loading time for your international readers.

xxviii.        Make sure your blog is mobile-friendly

Nowadays more than 60% of website traffic comes from mobile users. So, make sure your blog / website is mobile-friendly.

The hottest trend now is to generate Accelerated Mobile (AMP) Pages of some of your website’s pages.

With that tip, let’s look at another often overlooked one which is however an important SEO helpful hint for bloggers.

22. Make your blog’s information architecture neat and simple

The first highly effective SEO tip for bloggers we’re going to look at is the indispensable Yoast SEO plugin.

A duplicate is the same page accessible through multiple URL addresses.

When you have duplicates, a search engine might find it difficult to decide the correct version of the web page.

Fixing a duplicate content is simple.

To do so, the mainly three ways available to you are given by 11 SEO Tips for Bloggers that I quote:

  • Redirecting duplicated pages
  • Setting a link rel=”canonical” tag (this is a hint for Google as to which webpage is main – “canonical”)
  • Using the parameter handling tool in Google Search Console for some cases, (Crawl ->Url Parameters)

You can also fix a duplicate content issue using redirects.

Here, set a 301 redirect on duplicated pages pointing to the original. This helps when http and https versions of your website answer with a 200 OK status code.

When you want to keep a page, use canonicals to ensure the user experience. This also works for cross-domain canonicalization.

In the URL parameters section of Google Search Console, you can find all of your website’s URL parameters. Using this information, for example, you can tell Google that all the URLs containing parameter ?ref are passive. This means that they don’t change the content of the web page.

From this time you are giving Google a hint that is the same as And Google will actually crawl just a representative of each group. That is, Google will crawl either or, but not both.

This will save your crawl budget and avoid keyword cannibalization.

However, if your parameters change the page content displayed to users, e.g. pagination, which definitely is different from, then pick another option from the drop-down list and select how a parameter affects the page content.

In this case we want to index every URL containing this parameter, because the content changes for each value of the parameter.

25. Install Screaming Frog

It is a crawling software that you can download and install on your desktop.

Screaming frog visits all the pages of your website the same way as the Googlebot. It analyzes your website and provides you with fresh insights on what is going on.

26. Use Google Webmaster Tools

This is another top of the highly effective SEO tips bloggers should take seriously.

Google Webmaster Tools give you warning about things going wrong with your blog to correct them before it is too late.

For this, it provides you with diagnostics, tools and data to keep your site in good health.

xxix.        Create Google Search Console for your Blog

“Search Console tools and reports help you measure your site’s Search traffic and performance, fix issues and make your site shine in Google Search results.” – Source: Google Search Console site.

The Google Search Console allows website owners to submit and check sitemap, check and set crawl rate. It also enables you to maintain a list of internal and external pages linked to the site and receive notifications from Google about manual penalties.

You can also see which keyword searches on Google led to the site being listed in the SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages), raise page removal requests, etc.

The search console also gives you suggestions on what improvements you need to make in the HTML of your site. Besides, it highlights AMP issues, gives search traffic analysis, and tells Google the country and language of your site. Furthermore, it reviews the mobile usability of your site and much more.

Go to to add your site.

 xxx.            Set a Preferred Domain

When a new site is created, multiple URLs of it are created by default. Thus, your blog can be accessed through,,

So, you need to tell the search engine which of the URLs is your preferred domain. In other words, how do you want your blog URL displayed: or

Then you must add a <link> element with the attribute rel=”canonical” to the <head> section in the .htaccess file of the preferred page. And also to the other variants of it, as follows:

<link rel=”canonical” href=”” />

N.B.: From the last update I received from Google newsletter, it looks as if they now take care of this themselves.

xxxi.            Integrate Google Analytics

When you integrate Google Analytics into your blog, you will see how many times your blog post has been visited / read. You will also know how many of the visitors were new users and how long they stayed on the page/ site. You will also find out how many pages they viewed in one session, from where came, etc.

All these indicate your users’ / readers’ behavior. If this behavior is good, search engines interpret it as a sign of the usefulness of your site.

With all that knowledge from Google Analytics, you can figure out what is working for your site and what is not. Then take corrective action.

27.  Get an XML Sitemap

Every site has two sitemaps: HTML and XML.

The HTML sitemap, generally found at the footer and / or at the sidebar of every site page, is for users. The XML sitemap however is for the search engine crawlers.

All posts or content on your blog / site need to get indexed by the search engines.

Before that, search engines crawlers have to scan your site to index the posts or content. They can do this work better and faster if you help them know exactly where what they should look for can be found on your site.

This is where an XML sitemap comes in.

28.  Avoid Unnecessary Dilution of Your Page Authority

Now, let us look at another very important SEO tip bloggers ignore.

Did you know that, as a general rule, Google equally distributes and passes the page authority of a blog to all the links on a particular page?

Let’s say the authority of your blog is X. And you have 7 internal links and 13 outgoing ones on your blog post page. Each link gets X/20 SEO value of your blog.

You can ask Google to divide your page authority among only the 7 internal links (X/7), and ignore the 13 outgoing links.

You do this by adding the following code:

rel=”nofollow” in the <a> tag.

Let’s say you have this link: <a href=””>Outgoing Link</a>

Change it to: <a rel=”nofollow” href=””>Outgoing Link</a>

You can easily do such a change in the Text view while editing the Post in WordPress.

29.  You must try to avoid Google Penalty at all costs

So, simply follow some best practices.

One of them is to shun keyword stuffing. Others are to write original content and to write good length content. The recommended minimum length for an article is 350 to 400 words.

Do not use misleading titles. (They will lure readers to your site. But they will click themselves out fast).

Do not post duplicate articles. (Google will have difficulty deciding which the original is and index the wrong one or even ignore both).

Use images wherever necessary. (They break up the solid page of text and add that extra touch to your content. They also allow you to add more of your main keyword to the page).

Vandana Baria advises WordPress users in 15 Important SEO Tips Every New Blogger Should Know  to keep your post’s Comments section disabled.

His argument is that spam comments with spam links will get approved automatically and Google will penalize you for sponsoring spam links.

I don’t advise disabling your blog post’s comment section at all.
