This blog post is going to help us understand what web content is.

Content (usually written in plural) means the chapters or topics in a book or on paper. Or the substance dealt with (in a speech, etc.) as distinct from its form.


The web, or rather, the World Wide Web, is a set of standards for the representation and distribution of hypertext documents. In other terms, it is a hypertext navigation system enabling the search for information on the Internet.


Therefore web content could be the topics, etc. found on the World Wide Web.


Lou Rosenfeld and Peter Morville defined web content in Information Architecture for the World Wide Web, as “…‘the stuff in your Web site.’


This ‘stuff’ is found in text (textual), image (visual) and sound (aural) form. It includes HTML, documents, data, applications, e-services, images (graphics). It also includes audio (sound) and video files (images), personal Web pages, archived e-mail messages. Also, animations, and many other forms of file and data systems which are found in websites and web pages.

In computing, a page is a section of stored data, especially that which can be displayed on a screen at one time. This concept of web page content which began in academic papers became blurred when individuals began creating and owning a mosaic page. They often called it a “home page” or a “Web page”.

Types of web content


Essentially, there are two types of Web content: text and multimedia.

Text web content: This is the written words of something typed onto a web page, as well as the main body of words found inside images and in text blocks.

Any text web content needs to be of good quality.

Quality content is original written text judged according to certain criteria. These are helpful, valuable, informative, etc., instead of duplicate text which is the one copied from another source and pasted into one’s web pages. For example, a product review received from a merchant or affiliate company which has not been personalized before posting on a website.

Another criterion of quality content is that it should contain both good internal links and backlinks. The latter are links coming into a website from external sources. Both direct readers to more information on a topic.

A web page text, if not meant for local consumption, should generally be written with a global audience in mind. This is because it could be read by anyone anywhere in the world.

Multimedia web content: These are anything on your web page other than text web content (words). They are rather such things as animation, images, sound, and video.

These should also be of good quality to keep people watching.

Definition of the types of web content


The types of web content mentioned above are words, animation, images, sound, and video.


Word according to the Pan English dictionary is the basic unit of language, a sound or combination of sounds forming a complete meaningful element of speech. They are usually shown with a space on either side of it when written or printed. It is also speech, especially as distinct from action. It can also be an utterance, remark or conversation, or the text of a song or an actor’s part.

Animation in cinematography is the technique of filming successive drawings or positions of puppets or models to create an illusion of movement when the film is shown as a sequence.

A word of caution: Animations slow down the loading of a web site. This can irritate website visitors. So if your website is not dedicated to Web cartoons or animated movies, the best animations to use are those done in moderation.

Image is the likeness or a representation of the external form of a person or thing in sculpture, painting, etc. Images are the majority of multimedia found on websites.

Images can be obtained from photos or clip art or even done with a graphics editor or a scanner.

A word of caution: Images liven up your web pages but Images on Web pages should be optimized to download fast.

Sound is any vibration in the air which are detectable by the ear. Or simply, what is or may be heard.

A sound is embedded in a Web page for readers to listen to it when they enter the site or when they click a link to turn it on.

A word of caution: Sound can be annoying to a listener if it is made to be turned on automatically but no provision is made for it to be turned off easily.

Video is anything relating to the broadcasting of visual images on disc. It has a wide appeal among web page visitors.

A word of caution: It can be challenging to add a video which works reliably across different browsers.

We often embed these various protocols within web pages. But the web page composed of html content (or some variation of it) still dominates the totality of content found online.

This is the act or manner of controlling or handling words, animation, images, sound, and video properly or successfully.


As content is posted and/or loaded on a website, the site ends up becoming too complex to regulate or organize. So companies employ people as content author, editor, publisher, and administrator to manage their content.


The companies may also have a content management system. In this, the managers operate the system and organize the information for the website.


A business may also make use of content technologies as protection measures to block the copying of their content without permission.

Organizing content


Content must be organized in such a way as to make it visitor- or reader-friendly. In this wise, the site must be easy to navigate so that a visitor browsing around it could find the desired contents easily. It is only in this way that the website can really fulfil its role of informing customers, marketing products and services, or selling to visitors.

It is not always feasible to write content for a global audience. So some sites resort to Geo targeting of web content. Using geolocation software, the physical location of a website visitor, such as country, region/state, city, metro code/zip code, organization, Internet Protocol (IP) address, ISP or other criteria, is determined (geolocation). Then the content appropriate for that visitor is delivered.

Some companies may even have country specific web pages within their corporate sites. A typical example is the FedEx website at where users have the choice to select their country location first before accessing the information they need.

Geo targeting of web content can be automated, so that the visitor is automatically directed to the information needed.
