Now, let’s take a cursory look at each of them.
People read blogs to connect with others
Man is said to be a social being.
Before the great shift from rural life to the urban that took place in the nineteenth century in most western countries, we lived as a community. Although modern life has privileged individualism, we still feel that togetherness. Thanks to the Internet which has made the existence of blogs and social media possible, we are realizing that dream.
So a blog reader who wants to connect or interact with a blogger or other blog readers simply drops by. Then they leave a comment for the blogger and/or types a word on the fellow readers’ comments. An ongoing conversation or even a long-lasting friendship can ensue.
2. People read blogs to seek information in a convenient way
Blogs are usually maintained, if not daily, at least weekly, by the owners through regular updates. This makes them to be quickly indexed by the search engines.
So readers who want to find out the latest developments in a domain know that it is just a Google search and a click away. From the comfort of the armchairs in their homes, they can have access to the best and most recent information. This makes a blog a convenient source of information.
3. People read blogs to feel sociable and human
This reason can be sub-divided into:
a) To have touching life stories
I once read the inscription on a public bus in Lagos, Nigeria: Life is war. So people need stories of life experiences they can associate themselves with and relate to. Stories of love, deception, success, failure, overcoming insurmountable obstacles, etc.…These are the reasons why inspirational stories are very popular with blog readers.
b) To know others are just like them
When people read the stories above, they help them realise that they are not alone in a particular jam. This vicarious experience or pleasure makes the fix if not acceptable at least bearable.
c) To feel normal
When people read stories about real people coping with messy situations, it makes them feel good. That is to say, nothing is wrong with them for going through such situations.
people read blogs to have that personal touch
Blogs, like other Internet media, offer interactivity unlike traditional sources of information like the television, newspaper, or radio.
The fact that there’s a real human being behind the blog who shares their ups and downs, tips or life hacks give blogs that personal touch people crave so much in this age of widening chasm between individuals. They also know they can throw the blogger whatever question they feel like asking and get a personalized answer.
Also, a visitor who leaves a comment on a blog post knows that the blogger will usually reply. Sometimes instantaneously. That reciprocal discussion creates a friendly feeling. A regular visitor and commenter may even feel like they know the blogger personally!
5. People read blogs to have an alternative to traditional media
Blogs are not like the multi-billion dollar traditional or mainstream media. These, as the mouthpieces of the political divide, have entrenched stands on socio-political and economic issues which estrange some readers.
But one cannot do without information. Blogs represent a sort of citizen media. So people disenchanted with the old media resort to blogs to fill that gap as they see them as more credible sources of information.
people read blogs to get how-to’s or tips
Before, someone needing information or a tip on how to do something had to call on an expert. Maybe against a fee. Or simply go to the library.
With the Internet, should you have any question or problem, you simply key in your search term on the web from anywhere. And good old Google will indicate sources on the web for the answer. Blogs offer everyday solutions in any field. This explains the popularity of such blogs as WikiHow, Yahoo! Answers, Wikipedia, etc.
people read blogs to satisfy their curiosity
The eagerness or interestedness to know and learn as well as the unusual, strange or interesting are to people what a bright light is to the moth.
As blogs offer insight into other people’s everyday lives, how it feels like to be that other person, and live that “exotic” life fascinates blog readers. Especially with glimpses into different lifestyles, cultures, traditions, hobbies and points of view.
8. People read blogs to have guidance or seek an opinion
When you read the editorial page of the New York Times or the MSNBC you know the opinion you’re getting. When you pick up Fox News you’re fed another type of opinion.
On the contrary, blog writers are more likely to share a variety of opinions and viewpoints. They do this freely of any editorial constraint, leaving the readers to arrive at their own conclusion. It is this variety of opinions and viewpoints which many readers find missing in the mainstream and traditional media.
So if you want a one-sided opinion, read the mainstream media but if you need varied opinion, turn to blogs.
People read blogs to learn from other’s experience, expertise or piece of advice
A blogger may share their experience on something that happened to them or which they learnt about. They can also share an expert knowledge on a subject about which they are particularly versed or experienced.
Since we no longer have the benefit of community living where stories, expertise and experiences are shared in close proximity, people come to blogs to seek that kind of thing.
People read blogs to escape the humdrum life
In general, why do people read novels? Especially why do people read romance, adventure, fantasy novels, and thrillers? It’s to escape into the fascinating world of the book.
So a blog that entertains or amuses is a great way to make a person take a break from their normal activities, switch on their computer or go to their navigator. These help them to escape the daily grind into the fantasy world of the blog for a few minutes.
People read blogs to have fun or personal fulfilment
The principal force for visiting sites on the internet is entertainment, any playfulness or amusing enjoyment. That is why one can call the blog the infotainment sector. That is, the one which mixes information and entertainment.
Some blog readers enjoy reading blogs because the blog’s ambiance is enjoyable. When a blog is fun to read, amusing, when the content creator offers something enjoyable to readers, they keep coming back for more.
12. People read blogs to get affiliation
When a blog is organized around a particular topic, like a sporting team, a political candidate, a place like a town or country, social, etc. readers visit it for the content. They also do it for the opportunity to become a member and belong to the group.
The need to be identified as a member of a community and participate in its activities draws people. Members on Pinterest love to share images, those on YouTube are interested in videos, etc.
People read blogs to get the breaking news
What makes the popularity of Reddits? It’s the fad. The latest news. Scandals are especially always a matter for discussion.
That’s why blogs which are the platforms of recent news and articles receive high traffic.
14. People read blogs to have the latest news
This idea is akin to n° 13. Rare are the companies and even state, public or semi-public bodies which do not run their own blogs.
For the owners, the blog is a way to inform their fans, followers, clients, customers, and citizens about their activities. It is also to keep them up to date about the latest developments. For the visitors, the blog gives them the latest news about their favourite organization. They also learn about new products and services to better solve their problems.
Peopkle read blogs to read reviews
The Internet, having cut off the human touch in business, has enabled some faceless people with no integrity to steal people online. They use tricks under false pretences, what us called scam.
Another thing: products may look okay online but could be anything or even nothing in reality.
To help buyers beat frauds and scams, all kinds of reviews are written by blogs of movies, books, products, services, restaurants, etc. By referring to the balanced and honest view of a product (the good and the bad sides), people who often trust the blogs can do transactions online without much apprehension.
16. People read blogs to engage in discussions
All sorts of forums and social media exist online to help people engage in discussions and even debate.
The site’s main focus can be political, social or business. The latitude given to people to read about, but mainly share their ideas and opinions in these sessions, are a significant factor driving readers to these blogs. As they say, the Internet has levelled the playing ground for all.
17. People read blogs to have answer to a specific inquiry
Another important reason why readers turn to blogs is when they have a specific inquiry. Perhaps they are looking for a certain fact, trying to get information that Wikipedia, WikiHow, or Yahoo! Answers just couldn’t specifically offer. Or, they are looking for an expert opinion which could only be given by someone well known in the field. Whatever it is they are looking for, when a reader has a specific inquiry, there is almost always a blog with an answer.
For example, when I have a specific inquiry about affiliate marketing business, I don’t use Google. The answers are too impersonal. I go to the Wealthy Affiliate community I belong to and where there is a large pool of competences for the exact answer I need.
People read blogs to improve themselves
The millions of blogs in the world are run by people in many fields where they have expert knowledge that they share. People therefore go there to learn tricks to improve or cultivate their minds, themselves and their bodies.
People like to learn better ways of doing things. Things such as personal development, how to lose weight fast, how to learn a new language, dating and romance, how to work from home, how to deal with potty kids, how to remove acne, how to repair credit, how to get your ex back, men’s health guides, to learn a working process or how others cope with divorce.
People read blogs to enjoy good writing
Good writing in the blogosphere does not necessarily mean writing like all the great writers offline we hear about. Good blog writing is the one which has been proofread for punctuation, spelling and grammatical mistakes before being posted. It is writing that is succinct because readers don’t have the time to read long pieces. Blog post is writing that turns an ordinary subject into something interesting, useful and/or amusing. This is writing that you enjoy coming back to for more.
People read blogs to have authenticity
Who doesn’t like what is genuine, believable, reliable, or trustworthy?
People like to know they’re reading a real story when they are on a blog. This makes them join in and support or share with the blogger. Feeling respected is important to readers as no one likes to be taken for a fool.
Readers love blogs as opposed to magazines or opinion articles in newspapers and magazines. They know that most bloggers, as independent entities, write not to impress an editor. Neither do they do it necessarily to be controversial or simply to boost sales. Real, honest writing is what draws them to blogs.
People read blogs to have aspiration and/or inspiration
Blogs can let people have an eager desire or ambition. This is through sharing stories of how the owners themselves overcame adversities to become what they are today. And many bloggers rose from nowhere to somewhere they are today.
Whether it’s a book suggestion, a little known fact, a new craft technique, life’s FAQs, an incredible tale of bravery, a particular practice, people love that influence blogs exert on them. This arouses feelings, ideas, impulses, etc, that stimulate their creativity, ideas, etc.
Even bloggers visit other blogs (especially of influencers) to see what those bloggers are doing. They also go there to be informed about blogging trends. Also to get ideas for one’s own blog. Hence my blogroll.
People read blogs for Reflection
Blogs sometimes couch out pieces which make readers think carefully or ponder over them or over something else, such as their acts, life, etc.
