That’s what we’re going to see using the 10 factors we draw on to write our MLM reviews.

That said, let’s dive in to see the first one.

Year of creation / Number of years of companies and other details

This company was founded in 1997 and is based in Chula Vista, California.

They are a publicly traded multi-level marketing company which deals in nutritional supplements as their main products.

Their mission statement found at their website goes thus: “We’re here to do everything we can to make peoples’ lives—your life—better. We’ll do it by helping you wake up each day energized and brimming with purpose. Because when you feel better, you live better. And when you have a massive community to support and guide you, well, there’s nothing you can’t do.”

The company sponsors the “Be The Change Foundation”. It is a nonprofit organization that gives to important causes around the world.

The Shaklee company however was founded in 1956 and is based out of Pleasanton, California.

One notable thing we remarked about them is that they have boldly braced the changes that swept through the retail markets.

And around the mid-1980s they relocated the premises to the financial district in San Francisco. Then it remained actively a publicly-traded company on the New York Stock Exchange.

The following years saw the company undergoing many changes. One of them included a purchase of the Bear Creek Corporation in 1986 from RJR Nabisco for $123 million.

It’s quite likely that you may have heard of the Harry and David fruit of the month club made famous by Bear Creek.

In 1989 Shaklee Corporation struck a deal to dispose of 78 percent of their Shaklee Japan division to Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical Company. This was done for a whopping sum of $350 million, including royalty licensing rights.

In March of 1989, another company ventured a takeover of Shaklee. This hostile attempt made Shaklee to put the remaining company holdings up for sale to Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical Company. The operation took place through a stock partnership that foiled the takeover bid.

From that moment the company turned into a privately traded entity. They then moved into their current location in Pleasanton, California, from the former San Francisco base.

From 1988 to 2000 Shaklee was a title sponsor for UCI professional cycling. In their last year of sponsorship, the team even became a top-ranked tier 11 team.

Another remarkable feat about Shaklee is their association with NASA during their shuttle program. The company was contracted to supply all of the rehydration products used by the shuttle crews.

Founder(s) and/or Director(s) of the company

Youngevity was founded by Dr. Joe Wallach. As their chief founder he is the driving force behind the company.

We read the following about him on their website: “Dr. Wallach is a veterinarian and naturopathic doctor.

Naturopathic medicine emphasizes treatment, optimal health, and prevention via therapeutic substances and methods that encourage a person’s body to “self-heal.”

And on Dr. Joel Wallach’s own website is the quotation, “You must take responsibility for your health. Listen to the MDs, you’re going to be in trouble.”

This other company was founded by Forrest C. Shaklee, a nutritionist from Iowa. He holds the enviable title of the man who invented the first vitamin in 1915. Its name was Shaklee’s Vitamized Minerals.

In 1960 Mr. Shaklee expanded his product line with the addition of biodegradable organic cleaning products.

Today the company is run by its current CEO Roger Barnett.

Position among top 100 MLM companies in the world

Youngevity is ranked at number 73 on the list of the top 100 multi-level marketing programs in the world.

Shaklee however are at number 33 on the list of the top 100 multi-level marketing companies in the world.

Products and/or services offered

Youngevity provides its customers 15 product categories covering 31 brands and over 2000 products.

As you see, they have plenty of products, much of it in the weight loss field.

As there are simply too many products, it would be impossible for us to list them all here.

You can find these products listed under the following categories:

Need a good idea of what they have to offer? Then click the links to the products which interest you to check them out.

Also at Youngevity’s website, you can sign up for their free newsletter and join their rewards program too.

This program will pay you points for purchases and for sharing their website with others. The points can be redeemed on future purchases and rarely discounted products.

This company also has a pretty broad list of products.

All of them are tested. In addition they must pass a very detailed testing procedure.

The company possesses over 100 patents as well as over 120 scientific papers written on their product research.

Shaklee carries out such an intensive testing of their products that they had to take their third-best product off the market. In effect, it could not pass the stringent testing.

The products that they use are pure and tested by 83000 different testing points. That is to ensure they are fresh and pure.

Now if that is not commitment tell me what it is!

All of Shaklee’s products are science-based, and they approach the business from a balance point of view.

For if the body is balanced it can self-sustain life!

Number of countries in which the companies do business

They’ve got their fingers all up in just about every corner of the globe.

From they’ve got over 25,000 distributors spread across 65 different countries.

Global operations in Canada, China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, and Taiwan.

What we noticed when we first visited this company’s website was that they were very busy with what they were calling a March kickoff promotion.

If you need more information on this, we suggest you visit their website. This event looks like a seminar-type meeting with speakers and likes.

The way you make money with Youngevity is not at all different from many other multi-level marketing models.

In effect, you buy products at a wholesale discount and resell them to your customers at retail prices. The difference is yours to keep as profit.

As is the case with other MLM programs, you build a network of distributors under you. This activity will pay out in discounts, bonuses, and profits from their product sales.

Signing up to the program costs as little as $25. But to make any serious money, you would need to buy one of the company’s starter kits. They range from $115 to $500.

Unfortunately we could not find out the type of an MLM program they offer. However we did fall on a lot of reviews online that support their distributors.

We noticed that the company provides a large support group. This is in addition to a well rooted marketing system in place to utilize. And excellent training is what they provide.

Do you want to see decent results? Then you must work here just you would with just about any other MLM company. Meaning, you will have to work hard on recruitment and keep at it day to day. So, if you love selling and recruiting, the Youngevity MLM program will work wonderfully for you.

Shaklee on their side run a popular multi-level marketing plan. This gets you commissions for sales of products as well as for sales made by distributors in your downline.

Distributors are paid between 16 and 36 percent discounts on products and get 12 to 20 percent commissions on downline sales.

In addition to the above, the company also pays out weekly bonuses as well as other points-based bonuses.

Four different signup packages available for new distributors. They are:

  • Level 1: Consumer
  • Level 2: Member
  • Level 3: Distributor
  • Level 4: Qualified Distributor

Their complete program is on their website. We encourage you to visit it. This is for the simple reason that this review will be extremely long if we posted the many different levels and details here.

However let us say that we like their plan and we love the way they approach selling their products first.

The company offers five different plans for their customers. They are:

  • The essential plan
  • The RX for a Healthier Life Plan
  • The Shaklee 180 Starter Kit
  • The Life Plan
  • The Vitalizing Plan

Each plan has specific results. You can explore those plans and more on their website too.

Annual sales

The company posted a turnover of $0.142 billion for the year 2019.

Shaklee on their part recorded an annual income of $0.84 billion.

Our view of / take on the company

Permit us to say that this company has it all covered in regards of multi-level marketing companies.

We found two reasons why this company could be a good fit for you.

The first is, if you like to sell products that are quality driven and priced well, then you can be fellow bedmates.

The other is, if you like to recruit people on a daily basis, then this is your cup of tea. This point is crucial because that is what it takes to be successful in this type of business.

In view of all that precedes, we give Youngevity a big thumbs up. Furthermore, we recommend them for both the starter and the experienced MLM marketer.

If you want our honest opinion, we will say unreservedly that we have a really good feeling about this company. What else can we say when the number of years they have been in business coupled with the quality of their products dazzle us.

Other things we like about Shaklee is their business plan and the way they put the quality and sales of their products above everything else.

That, if you should ask us, is a good sign of a successful multi-level marketing company. Believe us!

Therefore we are happy to give Shaklee too a thumbs up and recommend them also for both the beginners and the veterans of MLM marketing.

  1. Thanks for the great recommendations! I personally am in a few MLMs myself and have seen the benefits of the really good ones, which are basically those with great products like both Youngevity and Shaklee here. I feel that any MLM that have health in mind usually prosper quite well. Some of the bigger names are like Amway and Herbalife that most peopelk know too.

These 2 companies are definitely interesting, will do more research on both of them to see if I should consider joining either if it fits what I want. Thanks!

    • Hey Terence,

It was my pleasure making these recommendations. Thanks to you too for your comment which I find valuable because you are in a few MLMs yourself. If MLMs in the field of health usually prosper quite well, I think it is because such products are consumed second to food items.

I have reviewed both Amway and Herbalife. My next comparison post will be about them.

  2. To me it looks like the deciding factor is whether one is comfortable recruiting people. If not, I’d definitely go with Shakelee over Youngevity. And I mean, being in business for 64 years speaks wonders about how decent of a company Shakelee really is.

On the other hand, if recruiting is your thing then you definitely want to go with Youngevity. Youngevity looks like it’s more in the traditional MLM line since it relies on recruitment. Shakelee would definitely suit me better than Youngevity because I don’t find myself to be a proactive recruiter.

    • Hello Todd,

Yes, where one MLM company puts the stress on recruiting and another not on it, the choice should go to the latter. For recruiting is not at all easy and not many people are comfortable with it.

I agree with you, a company like Youngevity which gives priority to recruitment is more in the traditional MLM line. And if you’re not a proactive recruiter, as you said, success will be elusive.

  3. Am just going to differenate both brands…..
Youngetivity as a company was founded in 1997 and is based in Chula Vista, California.
They are a publicly traded multi-level marketing company which deals in nutritional supplements as their main product while Shaklee Corporation is an American manufacturer and multi-level marketing distributor of natural nutrition supplements, weight-management products, beauty products, and household products. The company is based in Pleasanton, California with global operations in Canada…I believe this can tell you which one is more secure and realiable…..

  4. Hey, nice article you have there. From this article the two companies are doing wel. They both have different marketing strategy, while youngevity uses promotion to enhance sales, shaklee uses commission that is based on percentage to motivate sales person to perform more, because the higher they sell, the more the profit. If shaklee can extend their operatios they will do much better than they are doing now.

    • Hey,

Thank you for your appreciation of my article. I also appreciate your comment. I hope that you will come back here again to read and comment on another piece
